Well, Uwe Boll is popular these days....Popular fodder for gamer's hate, that is...Next to Jack Thompson (who is in a spot of
trouble currently), Uwe Boll is the biggest target of hate from gamers. Yes, he is an
arrogant ass, and his movies don't do that well it seems, but is he REALLY that bad at making movies?
Gamesradar has decided to try out 3 of his movies:
House of the Dead (2003)
Bloodrayne (2005)
Alone in the Dark (2005)
Their verdict? The movies he makes generally really aren't any worse than the typical Hollywood dreck. Yeah, the techniques he uses aren't original, yes, the plot is often two dimensional and predicable, and yes, sometimes it doesn't make logical sense. But you know what? The same could be said about a lot of movies. Also, they seem to think he is getting better, the more movies he makes.
Now, you can disagree as much as you want, but hey, you might at least be sure you've tried one or two of his movies first. If nothing else, the movies can be so bad, they're enjoyable, in a way.
NOTE: Spoilers ahead, if you haven't seen the movies.
Uwe Boll is in a difficult position. As far as gamers go, he's probably the most universally hated person in the world bar Jack Thompson. But the irony is that most Boll-haters hate him so much that they refuse to watch any of his films. Any of them. So we have forums full of gamers who hate Boll because everyone else hates Boll, and because that automatically makes Boll's work worthless, it doesn't get seen. And because it doesn't get seen, Boll never gets a chance to change people's minds.
We decided to put that right this week. Four brave cinematic adventurers from the GamesRadar team (Ben, David, James and Justin) picked up Boll's first three videogame movies (House Of The Dead, Bloodrayne and Alone In The Dark) and made an attempt to watch all of them in one night. How did we fare? Read on. Over the next six pages you'll find a brutal and frank, minute-by-minute account of our experiences and discussion.

The special effects/props suck in it. For example, the weapons look sooooo cheap, and there was one guy who's arm was cut off, and it was essentially two hollow tubes with fake skin wrapped over it....It didn't look much anything like an arm (both tubes were the same size, so he had some messed up looking arm)....That ridiculous 'prison break' was funny because it was so stupid....One could say it is as dumb as some actual VIDEO GAME prison breaks >_> Did Uwe Boll actually do something right? On purpose or not....
But yeah, like the article stated, the movie wasn't so bad.
I still stand by my previous comments I've made (I actually had this movie for some time before the Uwe Boll hate parade came around), he is a stupid, arrogant ass. He isn't anything special either, as far as making movies goes.
Bloodrayne wasn't a horrible movie, just not good really. As I said, I take issue with his arrogance, in the face of his 'meh' movies.
BTW: I labeled this story as a blog, because that was about the closest thing this article was related to. It isn't 'news' (industry or otherwise), really, though it might be news to people, who don't realize that Uwe Boll's movies aren't QUITE that bad.
I literally thought Bloodrayne was the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Even my Dad hated it, and he's usually one to like cheap B-rated movies. He called me in the middle of class just tell me how horrible the movie was after just watching it haha! Yes, he really was that appalled about the movie, I had to check it out myself just to see if he was telling the truth, thought to myself "Cmon now, the movie can't be THAT bad."
No, he wasn't joking. There are some movies that are so bad that they're just great and/or hilarious. Bloodrayne was so bad that it was just......baaaad.
EDIT: Awesome Final Blade, thumb me down just because I hate a movie you like, you're awesome, really.
I've seen the majority of Boll's movies and every single one of them are awful.
Alone in the Dark is one of the (if not THE) worst movies I have ever seen in my life. And I've seen some real stinkers! It was one of the few movies I couldn't watch all the way through, which was very disappointing to me since I enjoy the AitD games.
NEXT QUESTION....
I'm in no rush to see any of his movies, but I can enjoy something, cheesy or not.
Like I said, I don't like the Bloodrayne movie, but I don't really like it either. I didn't pay for it, so I don't care if it is rather 'meh'....
It is a believable assumption, GG. This wouldn't be the first time people have jumped on a bandwagon, without checking things out for themselves.
I have the Bloodrayne movies myself, and I love them. Say what you like people, but I enjoyed watching the movie. As long as its good and keeps me entertained I'll watch any movie.
And it was good imo.
Edit: I didn't thumb you down personally Raz.
I never saw the second one myself though, I wouldn't mind seeing it....
[I admit: didn't read article]
I've never hated Boll because of the allegedly horrible movies he directs because I have never SEEN any of them at length. However, I do enjoy poking fun at him because of his apparent obsession with Michael Bay (he mentions Bay in more than a few of his video rantings) and the fact that he comes off as one big cry baby with a martyr complex. He doesn't seem to take all this overwhelming criticism seriously, believing that the rest of the world is at fault, not himself. Who does he think he is? Jesus?
They sure have their way with words, but this guy Boll seriously has nothing to brag about. Mediocre titles.
