9 Overused Features That Should Be Removed From Games

Krunal | June 03, 2008 | Blog | Misc
This here is a very VERY sensible list (some may argue with this). 9 things that many games have that should effectively just be removed and forgotten about. Make your mind up on each of them... and for your ease, here's the quick list of 9 items from the article:
  1. Quick Time Events
  2. Nonsensical save points
  3. Mandatory installs (A must for the PS3)
  4. Exploding barrels
  5. Unlocking characters in multiplayer games
  6. Console exclusive features
  7. Games with instruments
  8. Mandatory Tutorials
  9. "Realistic" graphics that resemble other games

Note there does appear to be 10 at the source, but for some reason the 10th page just doens't work...
Although the arcade game Dragon's Lair is made up of Quick Time Events (or QTEs), Sega officially coined the term with its Dreamcast adventure, Shenmue. Little did the company know that the rest of the video game industry was going to copy and abuse its idea. A QTE forces you to make a split second decision to save a video game character and/or trigger an action. One of the more famous ones from Shenmue forces you to quickly press a button to avoid getting hit with a soccer ball. In this case, failing doesn't ruin the story, but you can die in other games, such as the upcoming Bourne Conspiracy. On one hand, QTEs keep us on edge and adrenaline levels high. On the other, developers have overused this feature to the point that we groan whenever a button pops up on screen. Unless there's a way to innovate, the QTE needs to go.

I disagree with 4 and 5 since exploding barrels kick ass no matter where they are placed and having all the characters unlocked in something like Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Brawl etc would be pretty boring and make the singleplayer pretty pointless. The others pretty accurate.

I only really agree with 1 and 8, the rest are moronic.

Jesus why are people continuing with the mandatory installs. Its like people just want to be blind on the sole purpose of them.
iLLmatic is going to have a field day with 3.

Oh and I pretty much agree with you Zero.
Wii-Mote definitely needs to be up there. Its a cheap gimmick, the whole library seems to be based around them, it doesn't make games that better majority of the time.

    5.Unlocking characters in multiplayer games

What?! Imagine how much worse Timesplitters would have been if there weren't any characters to unlock!

Mandatory tutorials are a pain though.

I don't agree with much of the list. I don't agree with 1,4 and 5 the most. However the mandatory tutorials are indeed a pain.

To be honest not a single thing mentioned on this list has ever REALLY bothered me. This is dumb.

Unlocking characters in multiplayer games is a yes and no. I mean, what if people cannot get Wi-Fi access? That'd suck. But for games like Super Smash Bros., of course. People have friend...access, haha. I hope.

Exploding barrels? I disagree, but I see why it's there. You might accidentally shoot it when it's near you and kill yourself.

Games with instruments? Are they dissing Rock Band and Guitar Hero?

Manditory installs. I hate them, but haven't come across one in a while.

No more games with instruments please. Playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band for just a short while is enough to mess me up when trying to play a real instrument later on that day.

I rather like #6 on the list because it makes the game different for each console! Somewhat making the game out to be more than just one game, but several. This way, if you have multiple consoles you can enjoy more of the game, if you wish to buy them on different consoles or something (or if you have friends with other consoles and play with them)
