Singer-songwriter John Mayor, Jennifer Aniston's new boyfriend says that people that play Guitar Hero are fakes. He'd rather have them go out and play the real thing instead of tapping away at buttons.

He tells Rolling Stone: "Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it.

“And having done both, there's nothing like really playing guitar. I mean, what would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?"

    He's got a point there.
Though that doesn't stop me from playing Guitar Hero and enjoying it. I'm not playing it to be like a real guitar player - I playing it to have simple easy fun.

Hmm ... for some reason I can't edit my post.
I was going to add that I agree with spong.com's answer to Meyer's statement:

      quote Meyer
"But Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it. And having done both, there's nothing like really playing guitar. I mean, what would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?"
No it wasn't John. It was devised to bring the air guitar and getting together with your mates to have a laugh experience to the masses.
      Damn right.

He looks like a douchebag. I play guitar too, and I don't see anything wrong with Guitar Hero. It's nothing like actual guitar. It's too far off to be a real simulation. Just a clever idea for a good game.

What idiot compares GH to a real guitar? They couldn't be any more different, and are enjoyed in very different ways. Anybody who compares the two is going to pick real guitar any day, and only because they're too narrow-minded to see why people like GH.

It's an interesting way for people to improve their rhythm and reflex. Why knock someone for becoming good at it? It's a game with a fun concept, that's all. I'd also rather play Medal of Honor than go join the army. And you can call me a wannabe soldier for that too if ya want.

He has got a good point,I might just put my RPG's and FPS'es away too because i could just go shoot and stab people irl ritete?

Eh, Mayer kind of looks stupid here. Not everybody who plays Guitar Hero wants to be a real Guitarist. So they can't be wannabes. Is everybody who plays Call of Duty 4 solider wannabes? Everybody who plays NBA Live 08 Basketball player wannabes? Is everybody who plays Smackdown vs. Raw wrestler wannabes? No!

He is probably jealous because people are just playing Guitar Hero rather than grabbing a guitar like him. Lol, idiot.

And then he looks in a mirror, realizes he's John Mayer, and his opinion doesn't matter.

John Mayer is a legend of Blues Guitar. I do actually agree with him, and I have been saying this for a while. Why would you press little buttons, when you could play the real thing? There is nothing like shredding a guitar, playing whatever you want, however you want. (Also, his name is spelt Mayor in that article)

      Right.

While we're at it, why play Gran Turismo or Forza when you can hop behind a Ferrari and drive it around Laguna Seca? Or why play Madden when you can strap on pads and hit other guys? Or why play Super Mario when you can experience the same thing by indulging in a little LSD?

Well driving simulators let you have fun beyond anything you will be able to get from real driving, like funny accidents, ultra high-speed racing and such. Same for Madden, hitting people in the real world is just not right and you can get arrested, but you can experience the same fun in a video game. And indulging LSD is illegal.

Playing real guitar is MORE THAN LEGAL, it's recommended.
I have no problems with Guitar Hero, but I still think it's a waste and I'll never waste one second of what could be wasted on real guitar for playing a plastic controller. I think only people who can't afford learning guitar, or just don't physically fit to play guitar should be playing this game, though it's good for knowing new songs but you got a lot of ways for that other than wasting hours on playing a plastic controller, trying to play all the notes from a song that the people who made it can't get it right without record+fast forward. Rock Band's drums for example aren't bad because it CAN teach you a few lessons about drums, that's why I think Rock Band > Guitar Hero.

Right, But i can't do any of that. And i don't have the equipment and patience to spend years learning it just to play one song at a half decent level. While GH is simply pick up and play fun with friends and does not necessarily constitute as me wanting to actually learn guitar for real.

legend?! He's decent. Much better than most popular music lately. I'd hardly call him a legend.

B.B. King, Steve Ray Vaughn, etc... They're legends. John Mayer is a pretty boy who learned a couple of scales.

You make it sound like just anyone has a choice as to whether they play guitar hero or a real guitar. People don't play the real thing because first of all it costs money to buy a real guitar (i realize it costs money to buy guitar hero) but once you have guitar hero thats it. But for the real guitar you could potentially spend hundreds of more dollars on lessons. Because some people can't learn chords and whatnot. Just let us have our guitar hero.

I think Mr. Mayer is the wannabe, he let Cameron Diaz AND Jessica Simpson go... what a tool lol.

I suppose that kills any chance of any of his songs being in the game lol (oh well, I'll live)

      Gamesta100 Jun 6, 08
I'd let Cameron Diaz go too.I can't stand that annoying bimbo. Now Jessica Simpson on the other hand.

Well I guess that seeing as I play GTA, I must be a wannabe psychopath.

This is stupid. I play the guitar, and I have to admit, that playing the pre-recorded tracks on guitar hero does not compare to the satisfaction you get from playing the real guitar, BUT guitar hero is FUN!!!!!! I play it all the time! It's not just for wannabes, if you ask me, people that say its for wannabes just cant play GH very well...

      Gamesta100 Jun 6, 08
I should start saying people who play it are wannabe's then lol. I struggle on normal lol.

Sadly, he isn't the first one to say this. There's something about Guitar Hero that gets some real guitar players all butt-hurt.

If you play a real guitar you gain the satisfaction of using and improving a viable artistic talent, one which (though quite unlikely) could turn into a career.

If you play Guitar Hero you get a different satisfaction through gaining points, advancing through songs, and having fun with your friends.

A significant amount of people who play GH would not take up a real guitar even if they didn't have GH in the first place. All GH does is give people a way to halfheartedly feel like rockstars, and have fun with friends while doing it. We're not trying to infringe on the coolness of you 'real guitarists', so stop taking yourselves so seriously and kindly *bleep* off.

      Gamesta100 Jun 6, 08
That's the point. Most people who play GH (me) don't want to get a career out of it.

"A significant amount of people who play GH would not take up a real guitar if they didn't have GH in the first place."

Call me crazy, but isn't that a good thing? How is that different than say a wrestling fan taking up wrestling because he likes to watch/play it?

        Dine_Agoti Jun 6, 08
Exactly. It's all in a good fun – which is kind of the object of a "game," is it not? Seems to me that people like Johnny-boy take the game more seriously than people who actually have fun playing it.

Oh ok I misinterpreted what you were saying.I thought you were agreeing with him.

      Dine_Agoti Jun 6, 08
Oh right, my bad. I edited it a bit, haha.

But no, I don't agree with him. I realize there might be some people who think they're a little too ko0ol for flying through GH on Expert, but most of the people who play the game really don't think of themselves as equals to real guitarists, I find.

I remember people camplaining about all the song they wanted on Guitar Hero, and then telling them to learn to play a real guitar if you want those songs.

    Rinkydink Jun 6, 08
If I want to play a real guitar, I will do. Comparing GH3 to a real guitar is idiotic. GH3 is a fun game to play, especially with friends, what is the problem with that?

As for a real instrument, I play the Piano, so he can shove his comments up his arse.

John should quit bitching and realize that the millions of fans playing GH instead of a real guitar are really giving his ass job security!!! LMAO

    JayCat Jun 6, 08
Actually, I think it's going to work the other way.

I mean you got kids who are playing this with their folks right? How many off them are going to turn around and say :Hey! this is fun! I want to learn how to play the real guitar!

Yeah, I dont really have the time or wallet to buy an electirc gutar withall the crap. This guy is an idiot.

I guess we should not listen to music seeing as we can go out and make it ourselveS?

Mayer is being payed to say that. He's on the promotional team for Rock Band.
  • 0
    Evanster Jun 6, 08
Dumbass. There are plenty of guitar hero players who CAN play the guitar. I played guitar BEFORE guitar hero came out.
And Tek, even if he's being payed he's still being a douche.

Dude's an idiot. I haven't met a GH player who actually thinks they can play the guitar just because they play the game. I'm awesome at Starcraft, but I don't go around calling myself a great military strategist.
