If EA Launched a Console

RKRigney | June 11, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 3 Wii E3 2008 Company
Would the current three competitors be wiped out of the competition due to EA's massive and loyal following? Read the arguments and discuss them yourself here.
For the second generation in a row, the video game "console war" is being fought by the same three competitors: Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft are sort of in a different league than Nintendo, as they're going for the gamers that are into high-end, high-definition, pricier hardware that gives you a 3 red lights when it's time to stop playing. Nintendo, meanwhile, is going for the casuals with their cheaper systems and generally more risky, innovative, un-internet-savvy approach. With Microsoft's Xbox 360 looking to reach the 3rd anniversary of its presence on the market this November, and the PS3 and Wii only a year younger, design docs are undoubtedly already being drawn up in secret labs that reek with the smell of high-payed nerds in preparation for the NEXT generation of gaming hardware...

EA has a massive fan following? That's news to me. >_>

Apart from sports games I wasn't aware they make anything good (this excludes Valve).

If they launched a console there would be a rehashed new one every year.

No, not new ones every year, but rather an expansion a month to the old one. There wouldn't be a new one for several years.

If EA launched a console, then that would mean the videogame industry has basically committed suicide.

Are you guys crazy? This would be a godsend.

While on their console games will have more ads than lost(the tv show), The actual quality games would be able to roam free on the other consoles.

    Would be awesome.

    I agree with slumpy, 100%.

The thing the author forgets is that none of EA's properties are big "System Sellers." EA is huge due to the sheer volume of games they produce, but the vast majority of these are targeted at the same, small demographic, that being the Madden fans mentioned in the article.

Rockstar isn't EA, unless I missed the purchase on Monday being away.

        Wait, did I?

Take Two is doing everything they can to get away from EA's buyout, so you didn't miss anything.

it would take alot for EA to talk me into buying a console from them. and i mean a lot. i cant remember any god titles from them. im sure there are, but i dont think of EA as a company that's games grab my attention. R* and konami grab my attention. in fact the the only titles i remember are all sports, which is cool but not enough for me to spring for another new console.

Eh, EA does their shooters well. If they made a console, it'd be full of crap, but if they released the Battlefield series exclusively on that, or anything by Crytek, I'd have to buy it. I can't live without Battlefield 2142.

They would probably do extremely well. With all the good games that they have out now. There's no question about it.

If all else would fail, they could probably just buy out the other consoles.

The sports fans would be drawn to it. It may even get none-gamer sports fans into gaming, even though their sports games have been terrible as of late.

    EA's shooters aren't half-bad, I have to admit, but meh, I'm not really a fan of their's.
