Kick-ass powers that game characters forgot they had

bbb7002004 | June 18, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 2 Playstation 3
Have you ever wondered why your favorite game character exhibits the most fantastic, mind-blowing powers in cut scenes, yet seems to have trouble with even basic foes once you gain control? So did GamesRadar in this list of Kick-ass powers that game characters forget they have. Check out the source for the games, and footage from each!
Videogame characters are lazy, forgetful, or just plain stupid. Cutscene after cutscene, they exhibit planet-shaking combat abilities and a level of indestructibility which would make God himself jealous. But as soon as you pick up the controller? The Incredible Hulk turns back into Bruce Banner and all of those showboating tricks and superhuman powers disappear into the ether.

They're constantly saving their best tricks until we've already done all the hard work for them, and even if not, then they behave inconsistently to the point of sheer idiocy. Here are the worst offenders.

Yeah, this is an issue that I'm sure lots of gamers notice.....

Well, if they actually did this sort of stuff when you wanted, they'd have to increase the complexity of the game, which means more development time, which means it will cost more to produce. Not practical, really >_>

Still, it is kind of annoying, knowing that your character is supposed to have all that power, but can't bloody use it when YOU want them to >_>

Haha nice article, made me laugh a few times.

I'll also point out that in MGS: Twin Snakes, Gray Fox looked like a complete beast in his cutscenes, yet he sucked when you had to fight him..

They should have mentioned FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus. That's probably the one of best examples of a character having awesome abilities in cutscenes and none in-game.

    Cutscene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hAj58yOTSg

    In game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDOyVg4RlVo

All Vincent could do in-game was jump, run and shoot. >_>

I remember in Ratchet and Clank 2 I used to always hate that I could fight through hundreds of enemies and then get captured because two enemies pointed guns at you

Yeah, yet another logical fallacy in games -_- Like I said, it seems every game has at least one....

Seriously, you GET SHOT AT (and hit sometimes) in plenty of games, yet the prospect of getting shot (during a cutscene) scares your character? Just dumb -_-

What is worse though? Getting shot at a bunch of times in games, and being fairly fine, but one smack to the head via a fist (or falling to the ground, whatever), manages to KO you for the time being -_-

    200th Rating!

What about the fact that if a character dies in a cut scene they are gone for good, whereas when they die in battle reviving them is a fairly simple process.

^(doesn't apply to Fire Emblem games)^

There are so many other such examples. Sonic and Chaos Control, Shadow uses it so much in games and Sonic still doesn't see the option.

Fable was the exact opposite, I could have taken those Minions.
