World of Warcraft. A game destined to die out soon, or the beginnings of a fantastic series? This writer believes that the first option is more likely.
"World of Warcraft is beginning to show its age. It's definitely not an ugly game, but with its decidedly last-gen graphics, it doesn't fair very well when shown next to current-gen technology. The game shows no signs of slowing down in popularity for now, but EVENTUALLY Blizzard is going to have to make a sequel, in order to keep up with the times. I have a theory which may or may not be correct, but which could cause a major problem for this would-be sequel: No one is going to want to leave behind everything they've worked hundreds upon hundreds of sleep-deprived and girlfriendless hours for and start fresh. This means that "WoW 2" would never EVER be nearly as popular as its predeccesor" Here are some reasons why:

With Diablo 3 coming out though, who really cares. Might not be an MMO, but the Diablo franchise has kept me more entertained than any.
People make new characters all the time, even with current ones at high levels, and often switch to them. I'd imagine they'd be even more eager to if the content was completely new.
But please, give us Warcraft 4 first.
But I'm sure they could pull it off, whether by making World of Warcraft taking place in an alternate timeline or with a new set of characters.
Also wow is a click that and watch your char attack type of game, Which would also not work well on consoles.
Is an instant failure for fighting with, you don't make your sales in computer gaming off of hardcore gamers, that population and their hardware makes up a tiny percentage of the market. Instead you sample the market and you research the hardware that runs common, after that you then build a game that can run well on high end systems and it can still offer respectable gameplay on a low end machine.
The formula is what Blizzard has used for WoW and it's proven to be a huge success since someone with an HD4870 has the same gameplay experience and they get some visual treatment as well.
Part of the mindset by the artists behind the game is that if they're dealing in an artist stylized world then it's easier to scale down or up since you're not dealing in realism and as such you can degrade the image with a lesser impact.
As far as the game itself goes, they plan to attack areas slowly and attempt to upgrade the visuals a bit at a time. Honestly the company from previous talks seems to plan on simply updating via expansions and upgrading the art and worlds as they move along, a good example of that is their talks about how many of the areas in the original WoW have no tree tops established, so the use of flying mounts was disabled simply because the game world from early on was completely unable to support it visually since they didn't anticipate seeing that in the game at the time.
Blackthorne properly redone for today would be amazing.
