Best Games of 2008 So Far

Marooned Chic | July 08, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 3 DS
6 months have passed since the beginning of this year, and a video-game journalist at news.yahoo posted his list of top games for this year.

So far these are the games chosen, but who knows? Another 6 months would pass and there might be greater games for us in store.
Anyway, check out the games.
Real news from the virtual world:

_BEST OF 2008 (SO FAR): E3, the video-game industry's big trade show, is next week, and you'll be hearing a lot about all the new software coming between now and Christmas. But there's a bit of a lull until Aug. 12, when "Madden NFL 09" unofficially marks the beginning of the fall game season. July is a good time to catch up on some of the games you may have missed. Here are the best of the year so far:

1. "Grand Theft Auto IV" (Rockstar, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3): The latest episode of "GTA" has its flaws, particularly in the storytelling department. But living a life of crime has never been more fun, thanks to much tighter gameplay and an exquisitely detailed vision of a decaying metropolis.

2. "Lost Odyssey" (Microsoft, for the Xbox 360): The epic tale of immortal mercenary Kaim is a delight for fans of classic role-playing games.

3. "The World Ends With You" (Square Enix, for the Nintendo DS): This adventure set in modern Tokyo is the most innovative RPG in years.

4. "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" (Konami, for the PS3): It may be more of a movie than a game, but it's a dazzling finale for one of gaming's most fascinating sagas.

5. "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" (Nintendo, for the DS): Charming characters wrestle with clever puzzles in this beautifully written and illustrated gem.

And the worst? So many terrible games have been rushed out for Nintendo's Wii that it's hard to pick on just one. I'll go with Konami's "Target: Terror," which combines repetitive gameplay, hideous graphics and laughable acting in a package that's so bad it's almost ... well, no, it's just awful.

I could disagree with so much on that list, most notably number 2 being better than number 4, but I think it speaks for itself.

GTA 4 is definitely going to be 1 because R* worked hard on that one.

GTA deserved to win, no doubt about it, but I agree with Cruxis Mana; Lost Oddyssey in 2nd and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 4th??? What the heck? Where did they get that idea?

And in 5th place, Professor Layton and the Curious Village??? I've never even heard of that.

As if GTA is number one and MGS4 is 3. They should swap them around. Then take GTA out of the list. In no way is it the best game so far

I have never actually played a GTA game so I don't know . Although, from what I have heard, 'The World Ends With You' is supposed to be a fantastic game.

ugh! I like GTAIV but I find this to be a bit......odd.

Maybe they mostly based the list on how many curse words were used in-game.

I don't think thats a list of Best to Worst, I think its just them randomly compiling games that were good. I say that because obviously MGS4 is better than most of those games (I'd say its better than all of them, but thats because I'm a fan).

Yeah, well even if you don't like where they're going with it. It seems a lot of people feel that way, myself included, it's still incredibly polished and good.

GTAIV is a well made game, I think if someone feels otherwise he/she might want to try other sandbox titles and see just how good they are compared to GTAIV. I think the only one that could compare to it would be Saint's Row.

The main problem people really have with GTAIV, I think, is, it's odd lack of replayability.

Previous GTA Titles have had nearly endless replayability, where GTAIV seemed to have hardly any.

There just weren't many things to do other than the story line missions. well, I'll put it another way, there weren't many fun and interesting things to do other than the storyline missions.

More of a movie than a game? No. Heavenly Sword was more of a movie than a game, MGS4 has a healthy balance of gameplay and cinematics.

Was Heavenly Sword a very cinematic game?

I might have to get it then. I played the demo, and kind of hated the gameplay, but if it's cutscene heavy, with a good storyline, I may get it.

I'm more drawn to games like that.

Well I think you'll like Heavenly Sword then...all four hours it lasts anyways. It felt like the developers really spent more time on the cutscenes and cinematics than the actual gameplay itself.

It's more like the problems that the "90 minute cutscenes?! OMGWTF!!" panic caused. Then suddenly everyone's like "Less scenes plx"...now you get things like this.

Are you serious? MGS4 had a healthy balance of gameplay and cinematics? I actually fell asleep during one of the cutscenes (admittedly it was pretty late but still, it's supposedly an action game).

edit: lol -4 thumbs for saying the cutscene to gameplay ratio is shite. You know it's true.

        iLLmatic | July 09, 2008
Maybe you just weren't interested in the cutscene then? MGS has never once been a game that anyone can pick up and play for a quick fix, but since when is it an action game? We all know it's stealth. You can play it like a shoot em up if you want to, but we all know this. Don't let the media and the superficial face of the game label it.

          Donnelly | July 09, 2008
I was interested in the storyline. I've been playing it since the first MGS (have since played the MSX games), the only problem was that the cut scenes were far too *bleep*ing long considering the amount of gameplay in between them.

You don't seriously think they didn't go a little overboard with cut scenes, do you?

Donnelly, considering I have played every Metal Gear game, considering the amount of holes that had to be filled in with this last part of the story, and considering the fact that it was expected to have longer than average cutscenes, I don't think they went overboard. It confuses the hell out of me when reviewers like gametrailers give the story an 8.7 because it's "confusing" or because it's hard for newcomers to understand it. Who picks up the 4th entry into a series of novels and gets irritated that they don't know what's going on? MGS has always had these cinematic cutscenes, so if you know this going into the game, I don't see how anyone can be surprised. I feel all the scenes were necessary to complete the story. If they cut them down, they might have had to compromise the story itself, but I appreciate them making the game what it is, and making it 100% for the fans.

        Drogo Baggins | July 10, 2008
You do realize that most MGS games have been that way? You don't?

MGS1 had about 3 hours and 20 minutes of cutscenes, and it usually takes most people to beat it about 7 or 8 hours INCLUDING cutscenes. So that's about half-and-half.

I think MGS2 and MGS3 had even more cutscenes compared to the amount of gameplay.

MGS4 had 7 hours and 55 minutes of cutscenes and took most people between about 17 and 20 hours to beat it.

So, in fact, MGS4 probably had a lower Cutscene to Gameplay Ratio than the other MGS games.

Well, it certainly looks like it does have a better gamelay time to cutscene time ratio, atleast compared to the first(MGS1). I can't help the facts.

        8(scene):12(play) for MGS4, and 3(scene):4(play) for MGS1.

Do the math. 8/12 is less than 3/4. I can compare it to the other games if you'd really like.
        • -2 thumbs!
          Donnelly | July 14, 2008
That sure would take away all the credibility from my argument if it were true.

Luckily, you're talking shit. MGS had a lot more play time than 4 hours.
        • -1 thumbs!
          Drogo Baggins | July 14, 2008
Well, it takes people an average of 7-8 hours to beat MGS1 including cutscenes, and there are over 3 hours of cutscenes.

So, of anything, they're ATLEAST nearly the same in terms of ratio.

Christ, man, can you please know what you're talking about? This is getting ridiculous. Or is it just getting late again?

Things like this are proof of why people should feel sorry for the mentally impaired.

It took me at least 12 hours to complete the first Metal Gear Solid first time through.

Funny how earlier on you said it took less than 2 hours to complete and now you're saying up to 5 hours.

Are you retarted? When the *bleep* did I say it takes less than 2 hours to beat MGS1? What is wrong with your reading and comprehension skills? Did you go to Elementary school?

I said several times it takes on average 8 HOURS, EIGHT HOURS. Goddamn, I can't say it any clearer, EIGHT HOURS including cutscene time. I said there were about 4 hours of gameplay at first, but then I said 5 hours later just to give you the benefit of the doubt.

And about it taking you 12 hours, well, you must've taken your sweet time. I was like 7 years old when MGS1 came out and I beat it in less than 8 hours, and it's not like I'm good at games or anything.

Say whatever you want, now. I'm probably not coming back. I'm tired of you changing my words and not being able to correctly read a goddamn thing I say in this pointless argument.

First off, retarded has 2 d's in it. LERN2SPELRITE.

Before you edited your post you said MGS took about 5 or 6 hours. 5 hours minus 3 hours and 20 minutes = less than 2 hours.

Also, you're saying you've made it clear it takes 8 hours on average?

          quote
5 or 6 hours INCLUDING cutscenes.
(this one has been edited mind you)
          quote
          3(scene):4(play) for MGS1.
          quote
          7-8 hours to beat MGS1
You didn't really make it clear, did you?

MGS came out when I was 6, I got at least 100 hours out of it. First playthrough was 12 hours and got progressively shorter.

I like how you edited your post and then complained about me twisting your words.

You said that I said there were less cutscenes in MGS4 than the other games, when I clearly did not. You blamed it on it "being 3 am".

The I went on to compare the ratios of MGS4 vs MGS1, and you made an asshole's reply by saying it's bullshit, when it's not.

I'm pissed partially because you keep being an asshole and saying things like "you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about" and calling me a fanboy, when you can't even read my comments correctly, and I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about.

So you're saying I twisted your words "several times" yet can only give me one example (an example which I admitted I was wrong about due to the fact it was 3 in the morning).

And I said it was bullshit for a good reason. That reason being that it was bullshit.

Oh, that's a good reason. It wasn't bullshit.

I even gave you the benefit of the doubt, changed the math a bit to help your case, and it still showed that MGS1 and MGS4 have nearly the same Gameplay to Cutscene ratio.

And, yeah, you only twisted my words twice, but I think the time that I mentioned was a pretty significant change of my words.
