After a long time, Sony had something to contend with Microsoft’s well established Gamercard Achievements. But the latest developments have made it somewhat less appealing to many, and especially to this blogger. Find out why.

Maybe a numerical system isn’t so bad after all? Achievements aren’t just some dumb numbers, a numerical score is much easier to compare than individual trophies. It is a standard index and you can quickly gauge the reputation and skills of another player just by comparing your gamerscore with theirs. You don’t want to say something like I have 5 platinum trophies, 20 gold trophies and a bunch of other silver and bronze ones. Instead, a single gamerscore of 15,000 gets that point across much more easily and gives you a better idea of who you will be dealing with.

I think I actually prefer the trophies and such over the gamerscore and achievements. Reason being, I like the different levels of trophies. Second though, is that BOTH of them have some sort of "gamerscore." Getting all the trophies currently available, boosts someone to the 2nd level "gamerscore." I prefer the smaller number for that score, instead of the six-or-more digit gamerscore. It's easier to glance at and compare. Which is easier/quicker for you to compare: 34 and 56 OR 235644 and 235562.

I don't know how high the PS3 numbers will get, but I hope not TOO high to where it gets into the quadruple digits. Hundreds is fine, but thousands is when it begins to be ridiculous.

But, trophies and achievements are pretty much the same, except visually. I like them both. Kinda like skill-points in games!

So what if gamerscores are easier to read? 360 users get tossed like 200 GP for getting a 5 hit combo on Avatar, instead of that a PSN user would get a Bronze Trophy, a much more accurate and fairer way of scaling in game achievements. Get your facts right.

Avatar's achievements were created by someone extremely lazy and considering it's more directed towards children, that's probably why it's so easy.

Yea, you're right. You don't want to say I have XX gold trophies and XX silver trophies. You say I'm a level 5 and you're a level 2. I think that's simple enough for anyone. That's the whole point of leveling up, instead of just adding to the same sum total.

Trophies give ranks as well. Hasn't anyone looked? If you wanted trophies to be so like achievements, the 360 provides that just fine.

That was my point. I was talking about trophies. That's why I quoted dumbass. Why would you say as well? Achievements/gamer points don't rank.

Oh my god. Please somebody make this "Trophy VS. GamerScore" crap go away. Seriously, is it really this big of a deal?

ya i dont really care. more trophies or a higher gamer score doesnt make you a good gamer. all it means is that you have more free time. i have a full time job and dont really care for sshd. i prefer mgs4 and civ rev. i dont expect to have a ton of trophies, but i still own at mgo and call of duty. its a cool feature for replay value, but nothing to get worked up about. btw i know that most games will eventually have trophies.

You know I don't mind the trophy system, I just wish Sony made all the games retroactive. If they can do that, im set.

this just kinda reminds me of good old timesplitters 2, and it's arcade league. platinum trophies were something to be proud of, and much cooler than seeing (achievement unlocked - 50 GP) or whatever. :\
i only have like 2,000 gamer points anyway. im not too attached to them.

    not that i even own a ps3 @__@
