Editorial: Women in Gaming: Creating a New Community for All

JayCat | July 09, 2008 | Blog | XBOX 360
Editorial discusses women, the pros and cons of sharing of oneself, and sexual harassment on Xbox Live. Why is this still happening in 2008? But more importantly, what can us, as a community of mature gamers do to prevent it?
But sharing information about yourself comes with a price. I have heard quite a few stories about women who have been sent obscene pictures via Xbox Live. I have heard about women having their reputation trashed over stupid things. Sexist remarks still abound. Personally, so far so good. If I go into a room without my clan, I will always get “Are you a girl?”, but so far I only have had to deal with a few guys who were either hitting on me, ganging up on me and a few nasty comments here and there.

We can only rely on the “powers that be” at Xbox Live, or the PSN for so much. True, the policing at Live is non-existent, and they have *got* to start doing more. But while we are waiting on Microsoft, what can we do as a community of gamers?

Why is this still happening in 2008?
Because people, to some degree, always have been and I suspect always will be stupid.
I think it starts with the parents though. I had a pretty good upbringing and I'd never have gone that far. With some proper education from their parents..people would act like this less I think, and less extremely.

A very good article, its all the bloody kids which cause problems like this, whenever you here a sexist remark its almost always either from some big macho man who thinks he's king or a snotty little kid who can't shut up. One of the main reasons I like PSN so much is because there are few kids, or at least ones with mikes
