1Up goes through the top five worst/disappointing sequels to hit games to hit the shelves. The list is below - more information in the link.

Some of their logic makes sense; when you have as big name, blockbuster title as the original, in most of these cases, it will be hard for the sequel not to disappoint.

5. Devil May Cry 2
4. Deus Ex: Invisible War
3. Super Mario Bros. 2
2. Chrono Cross
1. Metal Gear Solid 2

Super Mario Advance was a lot of fun, in my opinion. It just didn't really stick to the original Mario. There wasn't a single Bowser, Koopa, or Goomba in there, and you weren't rescuing Princess Peach. On the other hand, you can play as Peach, or even Toad, and you're introduced to Shy Guys.

Metal Gear Solid 2 was a great game, though I gotta admit, after a few hours of playing as Raiden I was starting to wonder when i could play as Snake again. XD (though the article failed to mention that Raiden was one of the main reasons people were disappointed with MGS2).
The "twist" at the end where you discover you'd basically re-played MGS1 left me feeling a bit disappointed too.

Do I even need to comment on this awful, awful list ?

The only 2 games I see worthy of being on that list is Mario 2 and DMC2. MGS2? Who the *bleep* thought that up as #1? What a moron. That was an awesome game and great fun to play. Perhaps if this was "Most disappointing plot twists" then maybe, yeah.

Couldn't agree more about MGS2. Its possibly the most underrated game of all time.

I'd remove Super Mario from the list and add Crash 2...:/

To those of you commenting on the choice of game in the list - read:the description I wrote

    quote
Some of their logic makes sense; when you have as big name, blockbuster title as the original, in most of these cases, it will be hard for the sequel not to disappoint.
This list was compiled comparing the sequels to their original counterparts.

    In short: MGS1 > MGS2
    Chrono Trigger > Chrono Cross
    DMC > DMC 2

    etc...

Super Mario Bros 2 and Devil May Cry 2 were excellent choices. I never played the other 3.

Mario was fun and so was MGS. Mario only mad that list because it was a goddamn ripoff of that other game from Japan. Still, it was fun.

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but ripoff?? Do you know the game it was ripoffed specifically? Sorry I never knew about this.

Doki Doki Panic if I recall correctly.

As I remember it it wasn't a ripoff since the game was originally designed by Nintendo. It was really a repackage of the game using a brand that westerns would recognize. Basically sort of a "Haha, fooled you" kind of thing.

And i completely agree with Chrono Cross being up there. So not as good as the original.

    DMC2 should be #1, IMO.

And MGS2 could maybe be on the top 200 Disappointing Game sequels.

    Metal Gear Solid 2? Horseshit.

All people can ever come up with is Raiden and the confusing storyline (which ain't even that complex)...and THAT ruins the *bleep*ing game?

Considering that fact that MGS has always prided itself for being a story heavy series, a convoluted story line that for most part wasn't really all that amazing can and probably did ruin the game for quite a lot of players.

MGS2 introduced The Patriots for the first time, which became the very backbone of the MGS storyline. The final parts of the game were supposed to be a mindtrip to show you how you were constantly under control...I guess not everyone actually understood what the A.I.'s were talking about. Regardless whether you understood or not, doesn't mean the entire game as a whole just failed.

    Final Blade Jul 21, 08
Wait now whats Super Smash Brothers 2? Melee? Hells no, that game is easily better than brawl. DMC2 imo is the only one truly worthy of being on this list, I mean Mario 2 was pretty good. I like it at least. So many more titles worthy of being on the list.

Super Mario Bros. 2, not Super Smash Bros. 2.

brawl is lame as all hell.

Sons of Liberty gets a lot of undeserved stick, even though it's an amazing game. One character cannot completely sabotage a game, and as much as I think Snake is an awesome character, Raiden did not ruin the game. Kojima had a reason to bring Raiden in, to add depth to Snake's character and to show how experienced etc. he was, and if you ask me, it worked. Also, the storyline argument is a pretty crap one. It's not even that complicated, as Seeker said.

Also, Mario 2 is a pretty good game when you take it on its own, but I guess the list is about how disappointing it was after playing the preceding game.

DMC2 definatly shou;d be on the list, but every other game on that list should be removed. SMB2, while diffrent, still kicked ass, Chrono Cross was a great rpg, and MGS2 was a great game, even people who hate Raiden will still say it was good.

You guys all fail Mgs2 was easily one of the best games for ps2. Disappointing plot twist? not even. It was great and I'm just gonna pretend I never read this cause it's so full of ignorant bs towards mgs as for the other games I don't know. but mgs2 does not deserve to be there.

I'm just going to pretend I didn't read this post since it's full of ignorant MGS fanboy shit. Just so you know, MGS 3 came out for the PS2 as well and that surpassed the second one by far. There are so many other games which are far better than MGS 2 and it is in no way one of the best games for the PS2.

However I'm not really fond of the MGS series and therefore don't consider either of them to be on any of my greatest lists, that's another story however.

        Gillies2006 Jul 23, 08
No I actually liked the second more it didn't surpass it that much besides adding the whole jungle idea, sure I'm a fan I don't play it everyday or anything it's just this thread is full ignorance. And Imo yes it is one of the best games for ps2 so pretend you didn't read it and *bleep* if you don't have anything nice to say.

Simply because you liked it more doesn't mean it was better. Why did you post in the first since you quite obviously having nothing 'nice' or useful to say. Why not follow your own advice?

          Gillies2006 Jul 24, 08
I know but my point is it didn't surpass mgs2 really.. the graphics were same and gameplay so what was so surpassing? Because you're wrong and I had to get my point across cause mgs2 maybe not better than three but shouldn't be on the list of disappointments.

    Storm Jul 23, 08
While I do rate MGS2 lower than the rest of the series, I still think it was a superb game. I mean, the only disappointment for me was bringing in Raiden, but the story, gameplay, and such made up for that little annoyance.

    I agree, DMC2 should be #1.

Well raidens a freaking bad ass in the fourth so I really don't get why you guys don't like him.

      Storm Jul 24, 08
It's the same reason why I don't like Nero in DMC4, there's barely any point in them interfering with the series. Raiden changed big time in MGS4, sure, but imo, if they are going to have us play as these other characters for the majority of an Action game, please do like the PoP series and create...well a different series for them.
