1Up goes through the top five worst/disappointing sequels to hit games to hit the shelves. The list is below - more information in the link.
Some of their logic makes sense; when you have as big name, blockbuster title as the original, in most of these cases, it will be hard for the sequel not to disappoint.
5. Devil May Cry 2
4. Deus Ex: Invisible War
3. Super Mario Bros. 2
2. Chrono Cross
1. Metal Gear Solid 2

The "twist" at the end where you discover you'd basically re-played MGS1 left me feeling a bit disappointed too.
Do I even need to comment on this awful, awful list ?
This list was compiled comparing the sequels to their original counterparts.
In short: MGS1 > MGS2
Chrono Trigger > Chrono Cross
DMC > DMC 2
etc...
And i completely agree with Chrono Cross being up there. So not as good as the original.
And MGS2 could maybe be on the top 200 Disappointing Game sequels.
All people can ever come up with is Raiden and the confusing storyline (which ain't even that complex)...and THAT ruins the *bleep*ing game?
LERN2REID.
brawl is lame as all hell.
Also, Mario 2 is a pretty good game when you take it on its own, but I guess the list is about how disappointing it was after playing the preceding game.
However I'm not really fond of the MGS series and therefore don't consider either of them to be on any of my greatest lists, that's another story however.
I agree, DMC2 should be #1.
