Why Pokémon is the Bane of America

RKRigney | September 11, 2008 | Blog | DS
It's a little known fact that Pokémon is the most disgusting piece of sacrilege ever forced upon the millions of innocent children in the world. SlapStic.com investigates in this special report.
Case one: You're a spiky haired boy walking through the woods and a butterfly flutters out of a nearby tree. What would you do?
A. Watch it and admire nature's beauty
B. Do a happy dance
C. Eat a leaf
D. Convince your animals friends to "use flamethrower" on it, just for the experience

Now if you're a normal person you'd probably do A, B, or even C, depending on how tastey the leaf looks. If you're the main character of Pokémon, however, you'd go with D. Why is that acceptable?!? Only a bloodthirsty, homosexual, maniac would slaughter an innocent creature like that! Not in Pokémon. In Pokémon, all the cool kids are doin it! Oh, but that's not all. There are other, horrible situations that children are confronted with in these games.

by no means a fan and its true.
I also have a question for whoever did this, has your life come to a all time low that you have to pick on little boys(and girls) joy toys?

this is idiotic. if you're going to write something like this, at least make it funny. if it's not funny, people are going to assume you're being serious.. and in that case, this article is remarkably stupid.

1 - you dont just gain experience from burning down trees. and if you've ever seen a single episode of the cartoon (dont act as if you haven't, unless you were NEVER cool in 3rd grade), you'd know they don't just haul off and assault every single pokemon they come across. as a matter of fact, with pretty much every pokemon that they capture, they do so by actually becoming it's 'friend' first.

2 - pokemon are clearly competetive by nature. none of them re simply forced into fighting like some kind of japanese cockfight. they're eager and willing. it's like a sport to them.

I always thought that was Ash's fault for being a pansy-ass wimp. He wanted to become a Pokemon master (by catching all initial 150 Pokemon) yet he didn't bother catching every Pokemon that he saw, and insisted on becoming their friends first. By the end of the first season he had just over ten Pokemon, was it? So much for becoming a Pokemon master. >_>

... I always thought Gary's quest would have been more interesting to watch.

I agree with Bandito, this "article" is stupid.

Wait a second here, you're a pokemon trainer, you train pokemon to be stronger and helping both of them win. What the hell do you want to do as a trainer? Pet the pokemon and continue on your way like a passing fruit cake?

Have you ever played a damn pokemon game or even watched the show???

Sorry this article isn't at all funny nor is it even accurate to the show and games. And trust me I played nearly all of them to date and still watch the show. All of the pokemon after battle and gets captured in a way accepted being captured cause it lost and fainted, thus now being with its new owner. And all of them loves their owners. Its not slaughtering anyone, they're not even dead for Christ sakes just unconscious.

gg spinning the show and game series in a bad light. Its a rpg for crying outloud. What about all the monsters FF characters defeat in battle, did they kill them too?

What I found funny was the writer is having a poke at the morality, in an ironic way, yet he claims only a "homosexual" would use flamethrower on a butterfly. LoL

Only a "homosexual" would use flame thrower because a true veteran of the game would know that a Rock type attack would do 4x as much damage.

I have always thought a slightly darker version of Pokemon would be cool.

Just little touches like maybe a drown move that hurts the foe a little every turn.

What is more American than exploiting the good nature of innocent animals and pitting them against each-other in a 1 on 1 (or 2 on 2 in some cases) fight to the death (or 'faint' I suppose).

    Sounds fine to me.

I like this sort of stuff. Pointing out something people might not notice, because it has been wrapped up in a fun/cool package.

Obviously the article is a joke. But yeah, if Pokemon became real, you'd have animal rights activists working overtime, screaming about how evil it is >_>

But really, this sort of moral/logic examination can apply to just about every game in existence (re: I have huge friggen guns, but I can't open a flimsy door. Or I can cut a huge dragon in twain, but I cannot step over a half a foot wall. Etc.).....

He's pointing out something that has nothing to do with pokemon. Answer my questions I stated in my post above. You are a pokemon trainer, trying to be a Pokemon master, what or how else are you going to capture the Pokemon?

You're going to have to battle it, and beat him and capture him. He makes it sound like its morally wrong or were killing the Pokemon. I have never within my time playing the video games, and movies to this date seen a Pokemon death that actually spurred the use of people making statements that the animal rights people needs to step in.

Its a video game, just like everything else, its not bad or wrong. And like you said games in general can be categorized like this, some worse then a game(like Pokemon) for everyone.

@BlackLabel-Im sure we known that already or some of us that is. But it doesn't make our points any less valid. The article wasn't at all funny or Accurate at all.

You're missing the point though >_> You can also train dogs to fight, but dog fighting is illegal in most places (if not all places) in North American and the UK.

        The essential point is that

You just seem to have problems thinking outside from what the game offers. Yeah, everyone (except team rocket) in the game/series are training to be a pokemon something (master, breeder, etc), and pokemon battles are the norm. But apply reality's rules, laws, and moral opinion to the game's world. You're using one animal to beat up another animal. It has been glossed over in colourful graphics, and made child-friendly, but that is what it is.

Yes, it is agame. But this article is a HUMOR article, get it? It is pointing out the (if it were real) morlal problem with doing that sort of stuff....

I agree with the post above. You never kill the monsters, but neither do you beat them to catch them. You weaken them.

Then, there are Pokemon Centers throughout the WHOLE game.

It's funny that people are actually considering Pokemon to be anti animal rights, yet Pokemon is just the opposite.
Take for example, Team Rocket or whatever it is in the newest game: They only care about themselves, not the Pokemon. That is something that the game always brings up, and says how terrible it is.
I don't even think a Pokemon has ever died in the games.

      Final Blade | September 14, 2008
From my knowledge of both the games and the show, there hasn't been a pokemon death. You are supposed to weaken the pokemon, to a point where he can't stop from being captured. After that process if complete The trainer has won the match and eventually the pokemon and trainer becomes best friends. Ash Ketchum and his pokemon are prime examples of the show.

LOL at the people taking the article as 'serious business'. It is obviously a humor article poking fun at the (when you think about it) moral issues surrounding the game.

And while pokemon don't die in the battles ('cuz that would scar the poor children's souls), you ARE beating them up. Apply these sort of battle actions to real world animals, for example. Sic a huge elephant on a cat and you tell me that is 'fair' and 'harmless'.

Again, the article is meant for humor, it is just poking fun at the moral issues (imagining it as being real) surrounding the game. You have colourful creatures beating eachother up for your own purposes. As I said before (in a reply to you FinalBlade), it is like dogfighting. Suffice it to say, if pokemon were real, and people battled with them, you'd see dead/seriously injured pokemon before long, and people screaming about animal abuse.

Yes, pokemon are capable of doing things that, for example, your cat can't do, but they ARE animals. You can conveniently ignore the moral issues because it is a game (like GTA, youcan shoot cops and stuff), but if it were real, you can be damned sure it wouldn't be so animal friendly (a-la the aforementioned injuries and deaths of battling pokemon).

In the end, the article is just meant to be funny, don't take it so seriously >_>

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Tallteen Pokemon aren't animals, period. They're not KILLING each other. Sure they're battling, but they NEVER die. Thats the point. It has nothing to do with thinking outside the box, its just an unfunny article making no sense about the game. Poorly Structured as well. I mean Im a pokemon fanatic to believe or not, and I found this not at all funny.

DUUUUUUHHHHH, of course they aren't real. You think I don't realize that they aren't [real] animals? Your stupidity knows no bounds. /frustrated.

THE POINT is that IF IT WERE, it would be pretty damned bad (beating up animals for sport, a-la dogfighting). Same sort of satirical article can apply to any number of games (like GTA). The article was simply pointing out aspects of the gameplay that people might not of thought about much (if you really think about it, it is mostly about beating up other animals for your amusement and power struggle).

If you don't find it funny, that is just fine.
