It's a good question, are video games taken too seriously these days? Once it was a pass time at the arcade, now it takes the form of tournaments and strong competitive feuds both off and online.
We're talking about the gamers who swear, get violent or even abusive.
So are they more common? Is gaming more serious than fun?

I suppose it's more like a "sport" now, what with all these competitions and such. Hell, people have gotten pissed at Chess tournaments. But I understand where they are coming from. They practiced playing the game, only to lose in front of a large audience. Perhaps they are beating themselves up about it for making a stupid error, but whatever the case, games certainly are in the "big leagues" now. Professional gamers.
X Edit: Especially considering that sports also cause big riots. Honestly, people are making it sound like we're killing each other over games all the time.
What happened to the days of casual gaming you all ask - they vanished when online multiplayer came into the light. The natural human tendency to be competitive just got a whole lot worse after that.
And the Alpha-Male syndrome can be seen pretty much everywhere.
Seriously though, it depends on the game. Wii sports is not as serious as COD 4.
