It hasn't been too long since Sony implemented Trophies, the Playstation 3 reward system. Seeing how successful Achievements are on the Xbox 360, naturally it was only a matter of time before Sony would follow suit and develop Trophies. Beforehand, completing games was rewarding in itself, but with the implementation of Achievements, gamers generally seem to spend more time on a game than they would otherwise, which in turn would lead them to buy sequels. However, now that the PS3 has Trophies, does that necessarily guarantee the success of the system?
So after much rumour, months of waiting, and one false start Sony have finally launched Trophies. Trophies are the PlayStation 3 gaming reward system which is clearly inspired by the success of Achievements on the Xbox 360. As Sony only implemented the Trophy system in July games that support it have been sparse. But this holiday will see the trickle of PS3 games that support Trophies slowly turn into a flood. But just how important are they to making a purchasing decision?
Once upon a time completing a game was reward in itself, but now you can receive Achievement Points or Trophies for accomplishing extra objectives. They dont change the game for a player, and not everybody responds to them, but the effect is the player will play a game for longer. Traditionally you go from A through to Z in a straightforward playthrough of a game. However the allure of Trophies means that once you have completed a game you might play a game again on a harder lever, or with different weapons, or go in search of special items. The overall effect is that a player spends much more time with a game then they might otherwise, they will see greater value in the franchise and are more likely to buy a sequel. In fact technology research firm EEDAR found that a diversity of Achievements in Xbox 360 games led to higher review scores and stronger sales.
Although the Trophy system has only recently gone live, developers have had ample time to prepare as Sony announced them early last year during the big HOME reveal. Naughty Dog took the time to implement Medals, a reward system, into their game Uncharted: Drakes Fortune allowing them to easily patch the game with full Trophy support. Criterion Games took the decision to lock game saves for Burnout Paradise to an individual PS3 user account, so that when they Trophy patch the game, it will retroactively reward players with Trophies. So for gamers who like to brag about their gaming successes, and developers who can expect increased sales this should be a win win situation right? Maybe.

I know I wont be able to get every single game that has trophies, but for some reason the whole idea of getting trophies AND not being behind half the world in doing so (i.e. most of my friends would have far more achievement than I could get, for me to even try to beat/equal them, where as with trophies, I've actually got more trophies than many people). If any of you know me, you know I'm competitive when I come to things like this, just take a look at my NeoPoints and GameGrep Points
However many people are of course going for it. Buying games they otherwise wouldn't or replaying games because of them. And I'm sure both Sony and the developers are taking notice. And eventually many if not all will start pushing trophies to sell their product.
What surprises me though is games that are multi platform that don't have trophies. Those should be the easiest to add trophies to. All they have to do is copy the achievement system and convert it over to trophies.
But what I'm surprised at is how many huge games don't have Trophys, like MGS4 or Rock Band, and I'm pretty sure GTAIV doesn't have Trophys yet either. And yeah, you'd think putting Trophys in for GTAIV would be easy; just transfer the Achievements over as Trophys. Duh.
I enjoy getting the trophies in those games, but I won't go buy a game just for trophies! I see trophies as what Insomniac puts in all their games that I love: Skill Points. They're like mini side missions to me . . . and I won't buy a game for mini side missions that I personally don't like the main game enough to buy for itself!
That being said . . . I would like Trophies to be mandatory for all games so that I can enjoy the side missions in the games I like, instead of having the chance of them not having them in there.
Games don't need trophies any more than they need achievements, they just add an extra touch to MY personal experience. Honestly by October nearly every game on the market will have them and I will be quite picky as to which games I get regardless of trophies.
BTW I did pick up PAIN and my fiance loves to play multiplayer with me.......we aren't playing it for the trophies because they are a bit too much to get but she really enjoys tossing the people around and we laugh like crazy.....the game may not be the best solo, but it's been great to play with her.
I don't get these people who end up being trophy whores tbh.
I mean its cool if you want to add more replayability to the games, but it shouldn't be the main focus within buying the game.
I don't care about trophies. Sure its a nice addition and cool if I get some, but Im not going to keep playing games that has them to rank my score. Who cares. It seems like a waste of time tbh.
