3 ways the Wii can revive 2D gaming

GSwagg | September 22, 2008 | Blog | Wii
As developers continue to push the boundaries of modern graphics to achieve hyper realism, there is an opportunity to return to a simpler time in gaming's past; the 2D era.

MyReviewPoint.com examines 3 ways how the Wii and Nintendo can revive the 2D gaming genre and use it as a strategy in today's gaming landscape.
If Nintendo continues to embrace developers that seek to develop titles presented in 2D and they dedicate internal resources towards new 2D signature franchise titles, the return to the Glory Years is imminent and only available on Wii.

None of those points really make any sense as to why the Wii would be the console to do this. The PS3 and 360 both have a large online library of 2D titles. The Wii might be larger but it is super ficial really. They both got Mega Man 9 and frankly I for one don't care about the "authentic NES experience". If I did I would get my NES out of the closet not look to the Wii. And frankly both the PS3 and 360 have lots of exclusive 2D titles as well. Some of them quite popular. Like flOw, Geometry Wars, and the Pixeljunk series.

I think that frankly any one of the consoles could revive 2D gaming very easily if they pushed for it more. But the truth of it is that we the gamer are the ones that have to really push for it if that's what we want. Money talks louder than anything. So buy the games you want to see succeed.

Well, their first point is completely valid: the Wii has the largest library of 2D downloadable games hands down. No questions asked. This allows newer generations of gamers to experience classics of the past at relatively cheap prices and without the hassle of trying to track down old games and systems. Because of this, that audience will begin to appreciate 2D games and what they offer and may signal a rise in their popularity.

I believe their second point is valid as well. Sure, while MM9 may be going to every current gen console, there are many other Nintendo series that could follow suit and see a similar retro revival just because of the sheer quantity of old-school Nintendo series there are. Neither Microsoft nor Sony has this advantage since they were both established as competitors in the console industry after the 2D era, so it would be impossible for them to do a retro revival for one of their own series since, quite frankly, none of them existed back then. Of course, third party retro revivals are still possible on their platforms, but they would likely also come to the Wii, which would guarantee that the Wii would still have more retro revivals due to Nintendo's own support.

While there aren't that many ground-up 2D games on the Wii, many of them, such as Wario Land: Shake It!, receive more attention from the Nintendo fanbase than other 2D games for other platforms due to the fact that the core Wii audience and Nintendo fans typically have more interest in those types of games, whereas the average 360/PS3 fan would care much more about what the next big FPS game is.

Also, like it or not, the Wii has the best D-Pad of any current gen console period.

The Wii didn't get Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Which in my opinion is one of the best retro revival games to date. While old school Mario and Zelda might be nice it appeals to a small audience. In fact old school titles in general appeal to a very small audience. And with the Wii's limited storage they have made it difficult for people to really use the Virtual Console to any great extent.

And where do you get this info about the D-Pad? Is that personal opinion or an actual technological fact? We all know the 360's D-Pad sucks. In fact they designed a new controller to be released in the UK to fix just that problem. But I have never seen an actual technological comparison of the Wii and PS3 D-Pads.

I have to agree with you Koloth, I think any of the 3 consoles can revive 2D gaming.

I think the Wii has more of a chance of reviving this lost art through the Virtual Console.

I think that is a matter of opinion. It is all relative really. The Wii might have a better chance with the larger number of retro games available. However any one of the consoles could easily take advantage of the downloadable games avenue to release a multitude of cheap fun 2D games.

Frankly though the 360 has several retro games as well and overall they don't tend to be the best selling games in the XBLA. The same is true for the VC. It tends to be the newer games that get the most attention. As it generally is with gamers. Once we play something to completion we rarely tend to look back.

Actually, believe it or not, the 3 best selling games on the VC are 2D games according to these estimates based on the information divulged from the Nintendo Channel, not to mention the numerous other 2D games with strong sales.

The point is that, sure, any console can help bring back 2D gaming, but the Wii seems to have the strongest chance of doing it and doing it well due to the three factors the author mentioned and supported in the article. There is just a larger audience for 2D games on the Wii.

Yes but only one of those three factors applies specifically to the Wii. Both the 360 and PS3 has a share of 3rd party retro revival games. And both have there exclusive new 2D games. And Bionic Commando was one of the best selling downloadable games this year with 130,000 copies sold in the first week.

My point is any one of these points could be applied to the other two consoles. They don't really point to the Wii being the best choice to revitalize the 2D genre. Just that with a little bit of a push from any one of the consoles we could see it come back to life very easily.

Hmm, I guess were just gonna have to disagree then. I believe that with the VC, Nintendo's inevitable classic franchise revivals, and the greater popularity of 2D games on the Wii that the Wii will be ideal for the 2D market.

We'll just have to wait see if any of these predictions actually hold merit at the end of this console generation, though.

Tbh I never liked 2D gaming, but I know people who do and who will be happy if they bring it back up.

That's because your first console was a DS.
