Blogger Theo Georga voices his thoughts on whether Guitar Hero is becoming the new Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

Tony Hawk started as a really popular gaming series from it's initial beginning in 1999 on the Playstation. It lost sales fast later on due to the fact that despite the games having improvements and new themes, they were releasing it at least one every year and even more leading to an influx on the market that buyers just don't take notice anymore.

Guitar Hero looks to be doing similar. It's started off with extreme popularity and already they're releasing multiple spin-off titles and more main games. Just recently Guitar Hero: Aerosmith received mixed reviews as opposed to all the positive writings of the past games.

With all these statistics and similar events in their history, will Guitar Hero really over do it and go into a decline?

Maybe Activision already knows this and is cashing in while they can. It's simple business.

It's not like any game is going to continue making sequels forever.

Those aren't really sequels though, its just milking the Mario name and mostly Spinoffs.

However with that said, I do agree that they need to lessen the amount of Mario games.

I don't think the genre in general is going anywhere. If anything it is more popular than ever with GH and RB competeing for space and constant weekly DLC updates.

However I think Rock Band took the genre in the right direction and Guitar Hero is trying to change gears. On top of that Guitar Hero seems to have gone off the rails a bit by releasing Niche titles such as Areosmith. They would have done better to release it as an update or DLC for either World Tour or GH3. Sales would have been better because people wouldn't have to buy a whole new game and they could capitalize on that.

Maybe they will take notice and stop with all the niche titles and take a page from Rock Band with the DLC and backwards compatible titles. Have to say RB2 with 500 available songs on DLC is a lot more interesting than paying $60 for a select few from one band I may or may not like.

Personally I'm leaning towards RB 2. I really, really dig the drums in GH.....but in reality neither title will see my money until mid next year......$200 is a luxury I don't have to drop on a single game.

The franchise needs to step back, pump a little more into each release, then sell. A little more beef to the burger is what I need right now.

[omg I swore that looked like a penis]

Of course everyone would think it's a phallic object. xD Ok, maybe I had that cross my mind too. =(

I think if they keep up the trend they will die off, not that it bothers me.
