A look at the way developers can compete with EA's Madden juggernaut. 2K Games and Midway have attempted to do it with All-Pro Football 2K8 and Blitz: The League with limited success. What did they need to do differently?

The Madden series is the undisputed king of football video games. They're entertaining games but as with World of Warcraft, another well-entrenched franchise, occasionally you have to wonder if anyone has a shot of knocking them off their pedestal. Well, in the case of Madden, the solution is simple: Mutant League Football.

the reason they havent been able 2 compete is because not 2 many football fans want to play a game that doesnt have the real teams and players. b4 EA bought the rights, 2k was right with them, but since the NFL doesnt give 2 shits about video game quality there just gonna take the money EA shoves at them for exclusive rights

phowell is right on the mark. the NFL sells the rights to EA, EA is the only one that is allowed to use the names. If other publishers want to compete, they need to be creative and make alternate football games like blood bowl or cyberwars football.

Or outbid EA for the rights, which is very hard since EA has a lot of money and easily outbid a lot of other gaming companies, like 2k. They have the rights to the NFL usage of their names, Jerseys, and everything else involved in the NFL.

There isn't anything to do differently. EA has the only NFL game in town and the NFL was stupid for letting it happen. EA felt the heat from NFL2K, so they bought the rights, and recently tried to buy the competition altogether. Just another reason I can't stand EA.

EA definitely weaseled their way into the market and pushed everyone out.....it's a shame. Competition is healthy.

a creative alternative would be nice (like mutant league football modernized with full 3d. that would be badass), but i'm not complaining one bit about madden as far as realism. i love madden.

do they own the rights to all the college teams too? can that even be done
