Will Sony And Microsoft Still Make Consoles After This-Generation?

Gothic Girl | September 27, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
At the recent New York Games Conference a debate was held regarding the future of console gaming. With Sony and Microsoft falling behind Nintendo and losing quite a bit of money in the process, will they continue to make consoles for the next generations?

(Go to the source for the full article and debate)
While there were many fascinating panels, it was the “Debate Club: Is the Console Entertainment Hub of the Future or Fighting to Stay Alive?” that sparked a great discussion.

The Pro-Console team consisted of Justin Townsend, CEO & Co-Founder, IGA Worldwide and Robert Stevenson, VP, Business Development, Atari Group. The Anti-Console team consisted of Alex St. John, CEO & Founder, Wild Tangent and John Welch CEO & Co-Founder PlayFirst.

The Pro-Console team argued, the ability to play games from ones couch, and the high cost of entry into pc gaming, the immersive experience a console can provide, and the focus on console manufactures to turn consoles into media hubs, is propelling the future of the console market.

While the Pro-Console team presented great cases, the Anti-Console fired back and strong. Alex St. John cited the failure of the PS3, and the lack of profit from Microsoft’s Xbox 360 causing them to forgo a next generation console.

of course they will.. the 2 companys know there mistakes now.. sony: dont bring out a console for 600+ and have no games to justify a purchase. microsoft: dont rush your console into the market knowing full well it was faulty.

Sony was looking at the war from a different angle with te PS3 though. They were determined to win the format war and beat HD-DVD. And they knew the PS3 would have to be the center peice of that victory.

There was no way they were going to release the PS3 without Blu-ray. And unfortunately there was no way to put it in the system without driving up the cost. Now of course the PS4 doesn't have to deal with this problem and they can make a cheaper sytem next time around. At least until Sony decides to push another new disk format.

On top of that The Anti-console team is being a bit extreme and ignoring some basic facts. They are calling the PS3 a failure and the 360 a money sink. Neither is entirely true. Yes the PS3 is lagging behind. But that's because the 360 had a years lead and the Wii is selling like it's going out of style. The PS3 has been outselling the 360 in month to month sales since January. Not bad for a "failure". Plus Sony never said it would be 10 years before they release the PS4. Just that the PS3 had a 10 year life cycle. As did the PS1 and PS2 before it. If they release a PS4 it will likely follow in about 6 to 7 years just like the previous generations. So 2012-2013.

And the 360 isn't exactly a money sink either. It isn't profitable in and of itself but Microsoft makes money from game sales as well and the downloadable videos and many other sources through the 360. I don't think any one expected either console to sell 120 million units in the first 2 to 3 years. They are both right on their projected targets. And as we all probably know, there are already rumors of a 2010-2011 release for the next Xbox. Now if the debate was if these companies would release a new system in the next year or two, they might have a point. But given time both consoles will start to turn a profit. Not everything is about imediate gratification.

I hope you're right about the PS4 coming around '12 or '13. That's right after I graduate High School.
All the more time to game.

If either stop it'll be MS. Although I highly doubt they'd even consider it tbh.

The PS3 will pull back if it expands it's library (Although the same could be said of the Wii, if it got more good games it'd tear everything apart tbh). The next MS console will probably give MS strength again. Provided they don't decide to ring everyone again XD

wow, i love watching fanboys bash one of the greatest and strongest and well known (game) companies.
i hope they do....but then again i hope they don't.
Microsoft and Sony (or one of those and Nintendo) should try to make a deal and make a game console as one (like Ninty and Sony did back when they were making a CD-Add on to the SNES (basically making it a PS1 w/SNES features, hence the same controller make-up with SNES and PS1-3)
as long as the next generation of systems STAY between 2 or 3 companies and they are a good price. i'll be fine.
*bleep* Seeker X and HawkMan, keep your fanboyism out. you act like Nintendo broke up with you.lol

none of the 3 console making companies are going to team up ever.

however on another note, i keep saying that Nintendo should just buy Sega outright. they certainly have enough money to. and when you think about it, Sega is continually going down the tubes as they have no good franchises besides Sonic, and basically only ppl with Nintendo systems are the only ones that seem to buy thier games anymore, since most of the games theyre making now are Sonic games and it fits the demographic for Nintendo systems. plus, if they teamed up the Mario and Sonic list of characters and started putting them together regularly in games, it would boost sales for Nintendo/Sega all around (because Mario and Sonic at the Olympics sold really well, and a lot of ppl were happy with the inclusion of Sonic in SSBB).

So if someone doesn't like a game? means he's bashing it? its called a personal preference. Get the Wii-mote out your A$$.

I have no interest in a Nintendo console. Oh look, I'm bashing the hell out of Nintendo, I must be a fanboy. Mario Dude, all you're doing is making yourself sound like a cheerleader. There is a difference between saying that Nintendo sucks donkey dick and just saying that you don't care for them. Nintendo doesn't cater to me in any way. Nothing more, nothing less.

They are not going to quit making consoles, there is a much bigger picture to all of this and it is to create company loyalty. If you buy a PS3 your more likely to buy a big Sony HDTV. If you buy a ipod your more likely to buy an overpriced mac computer. If you buy a 360 your more likely not to buy an overpriced mac computer.
The initial losses are nothing compared to the money you make if create an army of fanboys.

I doubt they'd stop here, especially on MS's part. They are headed in the right direction with their library, growing XBL features and such. Sony needs to secure some exclusives. They do well for a blu-ray player sure, but when I look at my 360 games stacked higher than my PS3 games...I wonder why I really got a PS3 in the first place.

I'll always keep an eye out for the Nintendo consoles...grew up with the NES/SNES.

I think MS has enough money where they'll end up making another console. And I believe with the Sony's system lasting as long as they do will end up giving them enough profit to make another console. Hell the PS2 is still making money for Sony to this day, I mean seriously.

Nintendo will be back, considering their console success with the Wii currently.
