Kotaku has posted up an interesting blog concerning the future of the Nintendo DS. It comes after the recent leak of the announcement that there will be a new model released soon, said to have features such as music playing and photo taking capabilities.

What Kotaku have suggested it that it makes it more similar to the likes of the PSP and iPhone, which assuming this model is rumoured correctly and will go ahead across the globe will spur a different type of market competition.

Will this new Nintendo DS model, assuming it's released, dominate the market with its new features?

For years Sony and Nintendo have both argued, on some level, that the PSP and DS don't really compete because the machines approach gaming in such different ways. Now it seems that if this new media DS gets off the ground, that won't be as true.

The difference is, people buy a ds for gaming, and people buy a iPHONE for doing phone stuff.

Normally..people buy PSP for either music, Pictures etc.
Normally people buy iphones to NOT do phone stuff.

I suspected this when they announced that they were testing other things for the Ds. (EX. Ordering sushi, Plane departures, directions..etc.)

The question is, if its true? There's no official word from nintendo so its still a rumor.

Either way I doubt it though. You think Sony is just going to idle by and wait til they release this new DS version? Im sure Sony is currently making a New kickass PSP version right now.

I suppose just to be spiteful, Sony would make the PSP upgrade have a duel screen feature. xD

It may be a rumour, but it's a delicious one.

Since when do game consoles compete with cell phones?

In recent news, will the new Whirlpool microwave oven be able to topple the Kitchen Aid dish washer?

Since mobile phones have attempted to break into the hand held console world. They didn't always have games on them.

Sure, but games on cell phones are a joke. I'll go on the record saying this, but the idea of the iPhone, or any phone for that matter, posing a threat of any kind to a Nintendo video game handheld is laughable.

Some mobile phone games are decent and they get better the more quality your phone is.

Like everything they'll improve, and it shouldn't be laughed at that it might actually lead somewhere.

I'm sure that the PSP is going to release an upgrade of the PSP just after (or if) Nintendo releases this new DS. And I'm pretty sure it'll be called the PSP 3000, they've been working on it for some amount of time.
