How Fallout 3 Is Different Than Oblivion

Linkin Park Fan | October 02, 2008 | Blog | PC Playstation 3
Many times people try describing the new Fallout game by saying "Oblivion with guns". While this statement does hold some truth to it, there are a lot of things that set it apart from Oblivion, and a lot of things that make Fallout 3 like Oblivion.
Oblivion had tons of girlie things for me to do. I could pick pretty flowers, collect pretty crystals and buy pretty clothes. Fallout 3 is distinctly un-pretty, but what did you expect from an irradiated post-apocalyptic Earth? The only flowers you’ll find here contain death, and you can forget those fancy brocade gowns.

After being filled in by Manfriend, I was able to take a look at Fallout 3 and judge for myself if it has more in common with Oblivion than it does with Fallout. And after three hours with the game, I’ve decided… it’s 50-50.

I'm a bit disappointed that they included fast travel, since that was the largest flaw I found in Oblivion. But I'm fairly confident that the rest of the game can make up for it.

Fast travel works in Fallout 3 as it did for the original Fallout games. You only can Fast travel to a location once you discover it. Sure the original Fallout and Fallout 2 were 2D with an overhead map, but the core concept remains the same.

there was fast travel in other fallout titles. stands to reason that if it was in previous titles and it was something that was missing from oblivion, that they would include it.

LOL, great point. Fast travel wasin Oblivion but YOU DIDNT HAVE TO FAST TRAVEL.

Beaten the game twice, and on my third playthrough with some of the new PC mods out there, and I don't use fast travel. Moot issue to complain about.

That article is pretty lame IMHO, because the writer makes all these comparisons between Fallout 1+2 and Fallout 3 -- and he hasn't even played Fallout 1 and 2! ? Like what is up with that.

That is a problem you and I spoke about before - people that never played the original games won't have the same appreciation for the title we have... I hope that lack of brand awareness doesn't hurt sales.

Fallout 3 is a Mod for Oblivion. Not a bad thing but is it really Fallout? I'm just an old Black Isle fanboy though.

I'll still buy it.. I'll still enjoy it..
