A Solution For Installing Games On The PS3?

Krunal | October 03, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 3
With many games now adopting a mandatory install for their games, many gamers are getting irritated at the prospect of having to wait an extra 10 minutes to play a game which they've been waiting oh-so long for, and don't get me wrong, I've been in that situation myself (with GTAIV).

However it seems that tokipost have thought of a "Solution" to this. The answer - release the "installation data" on the PSN and allow gamers to download it a week in advance... Whilst it's not something that game developers will jump at, do you think it's the right thing to do? Do you think this is what should happen? Give your views below.
The PS3 has mandatory game installs. No surprises there right? Since the beginning of the console gamers have complained that the PS3 has forced them to abandon the former gamer ritual and buy, unpack and play, adding the additional and sometimes painful step of WAIT between savage unpack (ripping off shrinkwrap is always fun) and the satisfying play.

Personally speaking I must say that I don't actually agree with this method. I really don't want to see the Playstation Store over-run by "Game Installs" and you never know, doing something like that may make more developers add the install, when I'd rather fewer developers force the install.

The only problem I see here, is this is making it sound there isn't a solution, when in fact its the PS3 users inability to take the current solution to this.

You don't need to freaking keep game installs or demos on your hard-drive. Delete them and that solves your problems or another practical solution is buy a 250GB HDD for as low as $60 dollars, since iLLmatic bought one that price.

It seems people just like complaining nowadays rather then take the solutions already available to you.

Umm I think the problem isn't the space that it takes, but the fact that you have to wait that extra 5-10 minutes before you play the game. I still remember the day I got FFVII and how excited I was to play the game... I got home with it and found out that my PS2 controller has broken and meant that I could not play the game... it essentially meant I had to go out and buy a new controller.. that was the longest 30 minutes of my life...

...likewise many gamers feel the same way when they're waiting for the games to install...

Big freaking deal you have to wait several minutes. As if the initial 15-30 minutes it took you to buy the game was really painful.

Honestly some of you guys are just whining, yet PC gamers have had to do this since the beginning. I have to 100% agree with Koloth here. Think of it as a prequel to watching the movies at the theatre. Sure you spend X amount of dollars for the tickets and food, and now have to wait through 6-7 minutes of previews before watching the main movie. Hell its also like food at a resturant. You have appetizers then the main course.

I think some of you guys are just spoiled with the past generations and can't bother just doing something for 5 minutes that isn't that long.

Well to me the 10 or so minutes before the actual game are no big deal. I suppose having crappy internet and never having enough money for games I am very patient, so there's no worry there for me.

The problem is hard drive space, when I get a second HD after the initial one fills up (which is bound to happen sooner or later) I'll have to first buy a HD wasting at least a $100 bucks. Then go through the hassle of managing my files between the two as game saves won't go on normal HD. Which is just a plain annoyance.

Though I agree its being blown way out of proportion.

Make no mistake, space is still an issue. How important it is depends on how you handle your HDD space. I upgraded mine so I don't fret over every install data I need to have, other people might not be so lucky. I still don't really understand why games like Quake Wars or Devil May Cry 4 need to take the space that they do.

Personally, a 10 minute wait to play the game wouldn't put me off too much. It could easily be spent in anticipation of the game, fantasising what it will be like.

Oh noes, console gamers have to put up with a baby version of what PC gamers have been dealing with for years...

You know when you spend 30 minutes going though the menus and waiting for a game to install on a PC 5 minutes on the PS3 is nothing. Hell I do the same thing I do when I install a PC game, I use the time to get the snacks ready. Pop the game in boot it up and let it load then go to the kitchen and get setup for a nice long night of gaming.

I mean hell except for MGS4 installs are a one time thing. And even then i don't mind much because it gives you a chance to take a bathroom break or load up on more snacks. Think of it as a commercial interuption. It's not like it kills your entire day.

I would like the instillation to go away entirely as it sucks up alot of space, but of course you cant always get what you want.

I think thats a stpid idea, i dont want to DL a 4gb file, and most of them are not background downloadable, so either wa, you still have to wait 5-10 minutes.

I agree, with the Internet speed at my house that would take more than four hours to download 4GB.

@Silver Mirror-That is the main thing I hate, Idon't care about the time, its the space that is wasted. I know, In know, buy a bigger HDD, but personally I would rather spend that 60-100 bucks on a game or two instead of a HDD just to play a game that I can't anymore because I spent the money on the HDD.

As I and many others said before, delete the game install of games you already beaten to 100% like Devil may cry 4 and MGS4 and any other demo and shit you don't play. That free's up space. There's plenty of thing YOU can do to make room, you're just unwilling to do any of them.
