Firstly the Wii got Mii's and then the XBOX360 got what many people have described to be "Mii Like Avatars" as part of the new dashboard experience. Whilst many can't deny the idea wasn't exactly their own, the same holds true for the Playstation 3 Trophies, and so whether or not it is their idea, it's the application of the idea that matters.

Many owners of the XBOX360 have considered the Avatars to be an "ill-advised attempt at Microsoft to capture the casuals", and this is what the author of the article believed that Avatars would be for Microsoft... However after seeing a similar sort of feature on website, he was quick to change his mind, into believing that if applied properly, it may be exactly what Microsoft want and need.

I like most of you wasn’t over-joyed when I heard that Microsoft would be introducing a new Mii like Avatar in the New Dashboard Experience. I like most of you found it to lack the gleam of a hardcore system and felt as though the Avatars were simply an attempt to reach out to casual gamers and make my beloved 360 into something cute.

Personally I have no idea why the Avatars or Miis would hold anyone's opinion as to where they will spend their money. I think they make nice additions to the package but not deal breakers.

If they're mandatory, I'd be seriously pissed. I prefer to keep my Gamerpic.

You keep your gamerpics, and if you dont want to bother with the avatar they give you 10 random ones to choose from when you start it up, kind of like you cant have no gamerpic, you cant have no avatar, but that doesnt mean you have to make one.
