Industry Blend: The Fall Of Kotaku

vortis | October 08, 2008 | Blog | Company
An article about the changing trends of video games, and how Kotaku was one of the hardest hit during these times. It also discusses the rise of blog sites and the decline of major sites.
I can already point out the problem: Kotaku failed to adapt. While Gamespot, Gamerankings and IGN have seen a decline in web traffic, people will still go back to them as a resource for purchasing games, looking over reviews of past games, watching trailers or gathering information not usually found on blog sites.

It appears that this article could be Kotaku throwing their credibility out the window as part of a contest. Our decision to run rumors is always based on the credibility of the site and the information contained within it. In the past Kotaku has proven to be a reliable site, having broken a number of stories through apt reporting. It appears that may no longer be the case.

Hm. This article is based entirely on the one I wrote last week. It's nice that they gave me credit, though

Isn't that the one where it stated a few places are losing credibility and traffic? Anyway yea it is.

I never seem much of Kotaku, but the few things I have read from there wasn't great.

I think it's cool what Kotaku started out as with their beliefs but they now have the "fame going to head" syndrome. The only real thing that annoys me about Kotaku is:
    1) They don't care about the "little people" any more. No longer do they credit / source smaller sites they only source larger sites and press releases.

    2) They post their emails between each other as if anyone else cares.

    3) Ashcraft can't report on anything except anime/videogame porn trends in Japan.

I think its interesting that something can go from nothing, to being new and fresh, then increasingly popular, than dominantly popular, than become less popular, and then be seen as sort of old-style --- all within 4 years.
