Microsoft Still Using Xbox 360 To Carry PS3

vortis | October 10, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 3 XBOX 360 Company
An article detailing how Microsoft is capitalizing on the developer struggles with the PS3, to acquire more developers for the Xbox 360. It also discusses Microsoft's plans to further establish the Xbox brand with the recent price cuts and third-party acquisitions.
Games like Final Fantasy XIII and Tekken 6 – once dead-on exclusives to the PlayStation brand – have jumped shipped thanks to Namco and Square-Enix finding a second abode with Microsoft. And as it was stated in the article about the Xbox 360 saving the PS3 from decimating developers, the multiple platforms has afforded both Namco and Square-Enix a comfortable alternative for making back their hard-earned bucks...

People keep saying developers "sold out" when they go multiplatform with games like DMC4 or FFXIII. But the reason they do this is because they have to.

And who cares if they "sold out" anyway?

Exactly. People don't have to buy a whole new system to play the games.

Actually it does matter if a game was previously exclusive to one console, and was pretty much spectacular, and then once it went multi platform the game quality severely dropped due to limitations of the other console, or simply because of a bad porting (problems faced by any EA game that is ported from an XBOX360 version to a PS3).

At the end of the day, I'm just worried that a game such as Final Fantasy would essentially be created on the XBOX360 in the future and then ported to the PS3 rather than what they're doing now on FFXIII which is creating it on PS3 and then porting that to the XBOX360.

Just remember that size on a disc is a big limitation, and unless developers are ready go to multiple disks for each game, the game wont reach it's full potential.

        Just how I feel...

I think porting overall hurts the quality of MOST games. I'm not saying all games, but the vast majority really suffer. You see games come out now for PS3, 360, Wii, DS, and even the PS2?! It's hard for me not to imagine some dude coding for the DS and then laughing his ass off to the bank when he sells the same thing for double for the 360 and PS3.

I think companies blow too many resources on porting when they could make a really outstanding game geared towards one system and make a killing if done right. I just want some incredible games for the system I spent hundreds of dollars on....doesn't matter if it's a 360, PS3, or Wii......we all want the best games we can get on our systems.

PS3 hasn't seemed to have problems getting devs for the fall lineup. At least, they're only getting better.

Love the line "PS3 is decimating devs". Idiocy there, at its finest.

...what? If you're serious, that's some pure fanboyism. "I don't care about the PS3 unless it beats my console, in which case, I AREZ ANGRYZ!!"

The PS3 has just as much right to beat the competition as any one of the consoles.

Weren't you just talking about how you're not interested in the new castlevania just because it's multi-platform?

I wasn't talking about that. This has nothing to do with games. I was talking about the consoles themselves.

I think it's easy to not be interested in multi-platform games this generation just because of the fact that they seem degraded when ported from one system to the next.

I remember it was the same way with games coming/going from the Xbox to the PS2, or vice versa. This time, though, the PS3 is filling the shoes of the Xbox and the Xbox 360 has become the PS2.

I for one don't care of multi, Like i said its all about the money, if its $60 on PS3 and 360, then 360 owners buy their copy and PS3 owners buy theirs, add that up and its pretty high in money right there. Also in some cases a lot of companies go to 360 mostly because right now its the only big system to have DLC that people are willing to buy so they can get $15 off of anyone who buys it because as we know, most people believe that 360 is best for online. I own a 360 my self but it doesn't to matter me... Video games aren't like they use to be, made for fun...Now its to see who can be a Call of Dudy or a frickin Halo, its never just fun. A game has online, not a lot of people on it, people won't get it to play with friends anymore. It's pretty sad now when owners of a system bitch...yes bitch...over a game that's just going to another side, its still coming to your console, it's not going to walk away saying screw you (in some cases yes). People have to stop looking at 2 copies, 1 on PS3 and the other on 360. the 360 one wont turn into a frickin monster and bite of your head because you are buying the PS3 one, or vice Versa...

Many multiplatform games tend to be worse. Mostly on part of the Devs laziness to specialize the games for the individual consoles. I have all the consoles, so I can get all the good games, and am always saddened a bit to see cross-console games because they make the games based on the lowest-tech-ability console.

What I say they need to do, is have each version of the game, different from the other, taking each console's strengths and features into consideration. That will also make people who own multiple consoles, to buy more than just one copy of the game, because they'll want to experience the DIFFERENT things in the games. . . More money for the devs!

So, devs, don't be lazy, and you'll make so much more money than if you make a game the same across the board, limited by the weakest platform you build it on.

The one thing I don't understand is the whole logic behind these consistent statements. Aside from all the specifics that everyone just commented on, the 360 has been out a whole year earlier (and was the only next gen console available) and it has been cheaper than PS3 since day 1, but it is not dominating. Is that really carrying the PS3? PS3 got raped by the media since launch, but it's right there in sales.

Well, the only thing you can say that the 360 is decimating or dominating the PS3 is the obvious being Online gameplay, exclusives, more games. Sales means nothing unless you have great games to play.

For example the Wii, sure it has 32 million console sales, but hardly has any games that justify purchasing the console for. Not to mention is ripping off consumers.
