So far, Sackboy and LittleBigPlanet have been hyped up to major proportions and on October 27th, we'll see if it that will make or break the cute thing. This article explains in that order for Sackboy to take Mario's place, LBP needs to be a very successful game.

He's adorable, but don't be fooled by his stitchy charm. For all its cutesy looks and bright colours, LittleBigPlanet is a capital-I, capital-G Important Game, one that could blur the lines between those who play video games and those who create them.

Sackboy--which might as well be the PlayStation's own mascot--obviously needs time to actually get to that WorldWide status. But the game's gonna be a runaway success, that's a given, and its a family friendly game which is fun and both easy and challenging at the same time. Maybe with time we'll see Sackboy cultists clash with Mario cultists in the future but not now.

    No, he won't be.

In 1986 if you went out into the street and asked anyone who Mario was, they'll say "Oh, you mean that Nintendo guy?". You go out into the street in 2009 and ask anyone who Sackboy is, they'll think your coming on to them and run away.

In time perhaps. But I doubt Media Molecule will release any sequels or spinoffs. More likely they create a new game with even more adorable characters.

He's the mascot of LittleBigPlanet, THE most versatile level-editing platformer to date.

Read around and learn a bit.

No, it is a very optomistic thought, TBH.

Unless th PS3 suddenly sells millions of more units, and practically everone has one, and LBP becoms the bundled game, or otherwise the de facto game to get, and each iteration of the Sony brand of game consoles comes out with a LBP based game, I wouldn't expect it to happen.

Even if the game is MASSIVELY successful on the PS3. The most it'll become, is the (future) official Mascot of the company, and Sony is trying to stay away from the Mascot thing >_>

Who the hell cares. Sony doesn't need a mascot, nor can it be it. I mean first off its not an established game or series(if they decide to milk it). Popularity is usually based off sales and success. Which Im sure the game will be a major success but why does it have to be as popular as mario? Why can it just be popular in its own rights?

Again with the whole comparing thing.

As long as Nintendo keeps making Mario rip-offs, Mario will be more popular than "Sackboy".

How can Nintendo make Mario rip-offs when they created the Super Mario series?

Or do you mean Mario spin-offs?

Very probably. Or it was a pun, of sorts. You know, spin-offs that are rip-offs >_>

I don't think Sackboy will ever be acknowledged as a true classic character, like Sonic or Mario, so I doubt he will ever have as much recognition as either of them.

    Dramon Knight Dec 13, 08
Nope, he is very anticipated but there's no way he would catch up to Mario's level.

I'm not saying that as a Nintendo fanboy, just truthfully.
