The Games That Defined Playstation

Deathsythe | October 21, 2008 | Blog | PC Playstation 2 Misc
Racketboy has browsed through the plethora of games in the Playstation library and weighed out the defining elements - things that molded the system, and console gaming for years to come.

This is much more than a list of the best Playstation games, it goes into elements that changed gaming as we know it. These are the quintessential video games.

Read through the article for in-depth analysis of the games/series as well as a little back story to each of them that you might not be familiar with.
The Sony PlayStation essentially came out of nowhere in the mid 1990’s to take on both Nintendo and Sega in the heated console wars. With some impressive technology and a heavy marketing budget behind them, Sony rallied a number of the best game developers in the industry to create a powerhouse library of games – many of which laid a solid foundation for generations to come.

This overview of the PS1 takes a look at the games that made the largest impact on the industry at the time and gave the Playstation its unique personality while overcoming its opponents (as opposed to a standard list of "the best" PS1 games)

Great list, brought back memories. Good to see Tactics mentioned, as well as favorites such as the Twisted Metal series, RE before it turned into an action game, etc.. Playstation would only get that much better with the PS2.

Honestly - This list was phenomenal. Brought me back all the nostalgia with none of the stigma.

They should have included Jersey Devil and Medevil though- those were the only two I really thought were missing and deserved mention.

    Oh, and Tomba of course.

/agree it is a great list... I only wish that Vagrant Story made it on there... It was such an underappreciated gem, and the first time that the Final Fantasy world of Invalice was introduced (though it wasn't a FF game, and predates the Invalice introduction in FF Tactics)

That's a pretty great list and it brings back memories. I still have a small collection of Playstation games now including all 4 Twisted Metal games and I still sometimes play them. I wish I had more though. And one game for me that defined the Playstation and it may just be me, but it was Legend of Dragoon. Absolute favorite game on that system.

I agree, I thought LoD was a great game and still one of my favorites. But why isn't burnout mentioned?

If the PSN can get all these games, it will be the best ever.

A list based article that doesn't suck? in fact this one hit the nail on the head. The Playstation had a lot of really great games. It's a shame the younger generations wont experience it.

They totally nailed it man. I still remember playing that 'Demo One' CD that comes with it, repeatedly playing the Tekken 3 and Spyro demos... true classic.

That is one awesome article to be honest. I have not really seen one like this. Really good. I feel somewhat sorry for the younger gamers who may have missed out on the Playstation era; it was truly a fantastic time.

    Thanks for the submission Deathsythe!

I agree gotenks, Legend of Dragoon was a great game, but other than that this is the most impressive list I've read to date. Playstation games in general were captivating and fun. I miss the days of Crash and Spyro now.

A decent list, I could have added some more (Strider 2, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, OddWorld and a few others) but overall a solid list.
