An article about the state of Sony's gaming division, and the ramifications their losses might incur. The article suggests that the PS3 could be the last console outing for Sony if things don't turn around.

Things haven’t been going over too well in the Sony camp since the launch of the PS3. While it sold faster than the PS2 in comparison to its launch, the PS3 has been a financial pain in Sony’s side for the past two years. The added state of the rest of the economy have finally culminated in Sony seeing 10% of their market share value drop rapidly. So what does this mean for the PS3?

Well, the first Xbox was a complete failure, and cost MS a lot of money. A lot. And they are still in the fight. Sure it's a possibility that Sony might not make another console, but I don't think that's the case. At least, I dearly hope for a PS4 to show up. Only time will tell.

Oh yeah, first Xbox was a failure, except that it spawned one of the most popular console FPS ever made. Yup, failure all right.

First XBOX was pretty atrocious but if MS can turn it around I guess Sony can too. Though the PS3 does cost more to produce.

I see it more of a money thing. With the way gaming is going its costing a lot of money. And I know sony and MS both have a lot of money, but they probably will ask themselves. Is it worth investing all the money?

    punksk8er Oct 25, 08
Sony needs to add BC back to the PS3, create an emulator to play all Sony games, or put all the popular PS1 and PS2 games on PSN. Thats the source of their problems. Can you imagine how much money they would make off of selling old games on PSN for say 5 bucks a pop? Nintendo re-hashes all their mario series crap. Why doesn't Sony? Get it together and work harder Sony!

      Final Blade Oct 25, 08
Well things take time, though I wouldn't mind seeing PS1 classics like FF7,8,9 on the PSN.

Though I don't see that being possible for the PS2 games.

I don't think this is Sony's last console, if it is, then the gaming world would be shit, and so would 360 games without the competition Sony brings.

        Livewire_19 Oct 25, 08
Sony wouldn't stop making consoles they already have the PS4 in the works.

Final Blade, you are exactly right. If there wasn't any competition then Microsoft would rip people off left and right. And xbox shelves would be full of shovelware.

Xbox wouldn't be the same with out Sony being there.

The thing is with that is they have to go back to the companies and do a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo. And that takes time.

I registered especially to place this comment:

It's William Usher for christ sake.
I believe it's one of the biggest PS3/Sony-haters.

Please stop posting his articles here on GameGrep, cause it's nothing but pathetic spam based on personal biased emotions without any argument that's related to facts, simply mis-interpreted or just mixed up.

Most Asian electronics-manufacturers will go through a though time, and the writer conclusions doesn't make any sense in that context. Nintendo didn't give up, MS didn't give up and Sony won't give up either.

So next time you want to link to an article, check the writers name. If it states William Usher, pls just skip it.

Ok, just wanted to share that with my fellow readers

Maybe one thing their doing wrong is not giving a lot of OTHER people price-cuts on their console. I still have to chuck out $700 on the layby of my PS3 for Christmas.

PS3 hater article or not, he does have a point. The PS3 isn't doing super well at the moment with it losing a lot of ground to Microsoft when compared to the last gen. The economic down turn sure as hell isn't helping boost sales of their expensive console either. And now, Sony has lost a lot of exclusives too. I still wouldn't say they are down and out though, they can easily turn it around with a bit more work with hanging onto exclusives and trying to make things a better deal for the consumers. If they can't turn it around though, I think it might be in their best interests to drop out of the next generation. A couple of years letting Nintendo and Microsoft run the show could be bad, but it might give Sony a chance to reorganize and refocus making the generation afterwards something truly awesome. That's just my thoughts.

They're not doing THAT bad, jesus. They've already started turning things around.

Just because one anal-yst says a bad thing, doesn't mean he can't be wrong about a few things. You gotta remember, PS3's been outselling 360 for a while now, even though they're behind with total units. We've got plenty of 1st and 2nd party titles on the way.

Yes, PS3 WAS doing bad. 2 years ago.

Willem, one thing I noticed is that fanboys tend to stick to fanboy related articles. Nintendo fanboys don't read Xbox fanboy articles, just like PS3 fanboys don't read Nintendo fanboy articles. So it probably looks like PS3 bashing from a PS3 fan's point of view.

Here's a few articles [due to limits of gamegrep] where Microsoft and Nintendo get some backlash by Usher as well:

I find it almost hilarious Kim you've stated that Nintendo makes the best first party titles only to state:
          quote
sure you have to wade through a lot of shite
If gamers have to wade through the amount of shovelware of first party titles to find the great ones, and not for Sony, wouldn't that contradict your statement saying Nintendo makes better first party titles?

Sorry why wade through those titles to find good first party titles, when you can find automatic first party titles that is awesome on PS3?

Kim Jong Il Oct 28, 08
What's difficult to understand. Nintendo make some excellent games but they also make some dross. They're very hit or miss but when they hit, they *bleep*ing hit.

          Final Blade Oct 28, 08
But to come out and say "Disagreed. Nintendo make the best first party titles"isn't true. I mean Sony has made a shit load more hit first party games making them, by all rights, having better first party titles, thus making your statement inaccurate.

A company that has more consistent hit first party titles = having THE best first party games. Fact.
        • 1
Kim Jong Il Oct 28, 08
Except it is true. They make the best of the best.

I really can't see why you are having difficulty with this idea.

Then again you seem to think that Sony have made a shit load more first party titles than Nintendo, so you were, quite clearly, born with an extra chromosome.

Nintendo makes the "BEST" first party titles, according to the long-time fans and whatnot...the entire World does not fall into that category...making it an...opinionated comment? Same goes for Sony 1st party titles...pretty *bleep*ing hard to paint either one as fact.

I'm not a long time fan though. The Wii was my first Nintendo console. If anything, I'm a long time Sony fan - I've owned all 4 Playstations (1 and 2 being my favourite).

I worry abut how this would affect the gaming world as a whole. If there were no PS4, then we'd only have Nintendo and Microsoft. It could affect gaming sales and development as a whole. It honestly worries me. However, I doubt they would give up just because the PS3 hasn't racked up the numbers. Obviously the PS and PS2 were huge cash cows. So they wouldn't give up just yet.

FB,Name One first Party title Sony has brought to us.
Final Fantasy isnt one of them.
NIntendo does make the best first party titles.
Mario, Link, Pokemon, Kirby, Fire emblem, Earthbound Starfox, Everthing you can think of.
Guys, we can't speak for the future. Let's jjust keep quiet until The 8 gen comes out.
Anti-Fanboyism isnt going ton help this.
And I Wouldnt be surprised if Sony went outta the game race.
Microsoft and Nintendo arent that bad anyway.

    HisServant77 Oct 28, 08
I highly doubt that. Then again, I don't doubt it.

PS3 isn't flying off the shelves as much as the other consoles, but you know what, History is repeating itself. The PS2 was the same way. Sony seems to make consoles and such for the LONGRUN and not immediate popularity. That is why each console they have made, pretty much introduced media and such for games, that the other consoles took on later because it became the norm. It's like Sony always tries to get ahead of things.

I doubt they'd get out of the gaming though, because like everyone said, competition (or lack of it) affects the industry. Without a PS4/5/6, etc. then unless something else takes it's place, the industry could very well go to ruins.

Did everyone miss the first word in the headline? You know... Editorial?

Also, Sony has been making money on the PS3 as of late. In their Q2 2008 fiscal report (July-September months), their Games and Pictures (movies) segments were the only ones to show any financial gain. The PS3 and PSP were both paying off, while the PS2 saw a decline.

The only reasoning behind the PS3 being Sony's last console should probably be based on their overall performance as a corporation, because no matter how well the PS3 does, it isn't enough to support a company of Sony's magnitude.

    BTW
    http://neoseeker.com/news/9006-xbox-360-still-ahead-of-playstation-3-in-japan/
Totally gonna spam that article whenever I smell a fanboy fight.

That's because Sony covers pretty much every electronic peripheral out there, except fpr PCs, which Microsoft handles nicely. Sony even has a motion picture division. So obviously a gaming console will not be able to support Sony as a whole, in the same way the Xbox 360 cannot support Microsoft as a whole.

You make it sound as though I had no idea. Didn't I mention other departments when I talked about the financial report?

My point was only that the PS3 isn't the failure some people seem to think it is. The only reason I could see for discontinuing PlayStation right now is an effort to cut costs... but seeing as how their Games segment is one of TWO to show promise these past few months, that seems unlikely.
