Editorial: Halo 2 and 3 are killing console multiplayer

vortis | November 03, 2008 | Blog | PC Xbox
An article about the lack of support for online, multiplayer console games. The author writes about the trend to play Halo games and very little of anything else.
People are probably already spewing spittle across their keyboard, while drenching their monitor in a torrent of swear words and fanboy protests. It’s okay, I understand your grief. But this is not a “Halo bashing” article, but rather, a look at how gamers have allowed it to control their online, console gaming experience.

I don't really agree with the article.

How is people playing halo too much killing online? You make your game to be as fun as possible, not cut things down so people wont play it as much?

Gamers have the choice of what to play, maybe other games that have dead online are because they are no fun to play online?

So by killing console multiplayer, you mean there is no one playing crap games like Area 51: Blacksite?

Uh...By that logic WoW has already slaughtered and eaten PC multiplayer.

I definitely understand where this person is coming from. You look at any other multiplayer game out there and you'd be lucky to find even a group of people to play against, let alone a small community. I guess it's to be expected but regardless, it still bites. Especially for games that are mostly online achievement type games, like Universe At War and Shadowrun.

I can understand what the person is talking about, too. It's just that Halo causes such a following that not many want to try out other things. It causes fanboy issues, such as my nephew and his 360. He's a 360 fanboy and for the life of me I can't get him to understand each console has their pros and cons. But his argument is nearly always "it has Halo!" It tends to blind people to the fact that . . . *gasp* There ARE other games! People don't want to try out other games, or give other online multiplayer games a chance, just because it's not part of the Halo series, or the controls are not the same as the Halo Series.

It's irritating to say the least.

Thumbs for both Play ISDF and HisServant77. The two of you expressed exactly how I feel about the situation, too.

You go on to play great FPS games like TimeSplitters: Future Perfect (which, I think has about the same amount of customization options as Halo 2) and no one is on.

Same goes for racers...I don't see why simulators are abandoned for Halo games. Just because they don't have Halo's vehicles they're not worth playing? I don't know, I guess you're right about fanboy-fandom.

Maybe because Time splitters future perfect is an old game?

You cant blame them for making online so good. There's actually not all the many people on halo compared to games like Counterstrike.

Um, isn't Counterstrike older than TS: FP?
