Charles Sharam of destructoid.com has done a blog in an attempt to show us that game self-made enjoyment doesn't have to be complicated. It doesn't have to be fancy mods or levels, not at all.

The ultimate example? Picking your name in the classic game, Pokemon Red. By adding small bits of personalization to a game, you can create a world which is entirely your own to enjoy. The combination of reality and your imagination can really lead to some fun gaming.

Remember it's not always done to the developers, you can make a game great by yourself in simple, little ways.

I remember that as a kid, the naming of my game characters was a serious ordeal. I would sit for ages trying to think of the perfect name since, after all, I would be stuck with it thereafter. Names themselves became a lead-in for attachment to my heroes, as once you name something, it truly becomes yours. Tagging the lead character in Pokemon Red "Pichon" is not so different from dubbing your baby "Danny" or calling your new dog "Sally". There's an aura of sentimentality surrounding names that cannot be ignored.

Personality is so important in a creative industry like ours. So get out there and build your names, your characters, your world.

Bah, that's not all it takes.

It does go a long way though. It's one reason I like San Andreas so much, I actually had a stake in the character.

Then obviously Zelda has used it to great effect. I prefer being me, or at least a version of me, in games.

Even Gordon Freeman, since he doesn't talk, you can inject your own personality in him, and get much more immersed.

That's why I love RPGs so much. You can totally immerse yourself into a world, feel the emotion between characters, really connect with them and make it your own. The custom names are just the beginning. Total customization is the real key.

I always hated waiting to play a game because I couldn't decide on the right name of my character. Normally you could just put your real name, but picking a fun one was, well half the fun. Total bitch waiting though.

That's why you need an alias.

Doesn't have to be an alias. Some people like the idea of originality but in a way that it is still tied to them each and every time.
