While many Wii owners will be salivating over Animal Crossing: City Folk because there really isn’t anything else, and while every Xbox 360 owner over the age of 13 will be playing “Horde” online in Gears of War 2, the PlayStation 3 was poised to offer the most innovative title of the year in LittleBigPlanet. The problem is, no one is buying it.

MyReviewPoint examines 3 reasons why Media Molecule's inaugural title may have been better suited to release on the Wii versus Sony's PlayStation 3.

If Media Molecule had chosen Nintendo they would have benefited from a rabid fanboy base that is dedicated to Nintendo and its top titles, and reached the mainstream audience captivated by accessible software.

This just in, LBP failed. Kidding. The game hasn't released in some places yet.

I'll be honest . . . I didn't read the article. Reason being . . . I can already tell that it's probably biased, fanboyish, or at the very least plays the "childish card" as a last, not even worth lifting a finger to retort, resort.

Of course, it also is sure to mention the very widely blown out of proportion moderation of levels that is going on too.

But, I, along with hundreds of thousands of others, LOVE LBP and will continue to LOVE LBP. By no means is it a "LittleBigMistake."

I don't rightly give a rat's ass about how many it sold. The point is, it's an amazing game. Take Okami for example: one of the most celebrated PS2 games I know of. But it really did badly in sales. But did that stop it from hitting the gaming history books? No! Websites still recommend that game, even now.

      Sales are irrelevant.

I do give a rat's ass about sales though, because Sony doesn't care about your opinion. It cares about the majority's opinion. If only a small number of people like the game, more than likely MM will not create a sequel. The people better like it, then.

          Koloth Nov 26, 08
The sales numbers are scewed. The game released with only two days left in October. 200,000 units in 2 days isn't all that bad. These articles are sensationalism at its finest. By the end of November we will be seeing the real numbers.

I'm not saying any stats yet; I'm saying that I care about what the sales say, because this will influence the company creating the game whether or not they want to give us any more sex-in-a-game.

Okay, I'm just saying don't get caught up in the failure hype just yet. To many people are over reacting to nothing.

Just like Beyond Good and Evil. The game was brilliant but originally didn't sell very good.It wasn't till a few years later that people started buying it because of word of mouth.

It was a mistake for you not to read the article. It gave only three points, but the three points were quite unbiased; very matter-of-fact.

LBP seems more like an upgraded arcade game than a proper game.

      doylie Nov 26, 08
What part of the game did you play?

'Cos in no way do I think it's a 'upgraded arcade game'

It's a good game. I have played it a couple times. I can't complain about it.

Koloth is right. It has only been on in stores no less then a month and already sold around 500,000 (including nov. days) this game is going to reach a million sells by the end of the year.

    Storm Nov 26, 08
Indeed, this game is going to be quite a hot X-Mas item. I already have three relatives asking for it. And I hope to get my copy by then as well.

    Final Blade Nov 26, 08
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't heavenly sword didn't get great sales either(like just hitting over a million)? But a pretty good score. And truth be told I'm enjoying that myself. Ignoring the length I can say it definitely for me deserves a high 90's if not 100. The game story, graphics, voice overs, controls, music was very brilliantly made.

Whether or not I find this game fun, doesn't mean it isn't. Many people have, and truth be told, it released on a difficult month and still holding its own with high sales. I think its safe to say LBP is a smashing hit.

Well the counter points for LittleBigPlanet going on the Wii. First: LittleBigPlanet is a hardcore title, the casual gamers would have fits trying to create a half decent level. Second: That the game would have to simplified (eg complexity of levels, graphics and physics) due to the consoles restrictions and Third: That the Wii's online sucks balls and that knowing Nintendo you would need friend codes to share content with someone.

I'm not bashing the Wii, but to be fair their are advantages and disadvantages to going with any platform, Media Molecule made their choice.

Interesting stuff. A good read is here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=343292

    A quote:

"Shuhei Yoshida, Sony worldwide studio boss, said: “LittleBigPlanet is going to be the biggest title for Sony in all markets this year” and producer Eric Fong stated it was "going to be a hardware seller".

Looking at its first month's performance, it is simply not hitting these targets.

It positioned 8th in october NPD selling just ~215k copies - not terrible, but not "biggest title" of the year territory.
In Japan it has sold ~80k (still a way from getting through its initial shipment of 130k) and is already out of the top 20.
In its European homeland it crashed out of the top ten in just its second week, and has subsequently slipped further down the charts.

There is no sign that LBP has significantly contributed to hardware sales either.
PS3 sold just 190k in october NPD, way behind 360 (370K) and Wii (800k).
The PS3 is now even being outsold across Europe by the 360 (a reversal of trends here).

Whilst the title might have legs, weekly sales in Japan and Europe show no evidence of this (sales have declined substantially every week, whilst even a struggling mass market game like WiiMusic managed to go back up into the uk top ten this week). It is very unlikely it will appear in next months NPD top ten."

      Fatal Error Nov 26, 08
Uh, you do realize that the game was released with barely a few days left in october, right? 215k copies is pretty good in such a short time span.

The numbers part of the guys article is based on the 4 days of sales. But the meat of what the guy wrote (I see a lot of people not reading the guys article.. not you Fatal, but others commenting above).

The way that this game has been talked about all over the internet for the past year, has made even 360 and Wii owners be like "holy shit I want to play this game" ... now it is out, I don't know anyone discussing it.. everyone is talking about Dead Space, Gears 2, and Left 4 Dead (plus leftover Fallout 3 and Fable II talk).

The person who wrote the article makes good points (for the most part) and the game is definitely not on the system where it would garner the most interest... the Wii.

No matter what, I still want to play the game (not enough to buy a PS3 to do so, but the game still seems fun to try out other peoples levels).

Given the fact LBP released on a month of big game hitters for both PS3 and 360, even though that game is one of them. Yeah I can say those sales are very good. Its just going to be increased come the holiday season.

          Red 9 Nov 26, 08
4 days of sales??? Then of course they'll be low! Jesus.

Oddly enough, I see very few talking about Dead Space, Fable 2 and Gears 2. It's mostly Fallout 3.

It's the games fault, and it's Sony's advertising. The need to make it appeal to mature audiences.
    • 0
      Capn Droid Nov 26, 08
How in the world can a game like LittleBigPlanet attract a more mature audience? Although I see what you're getting at. People who buy the PS3 are pretty much going to play nothing but Mature rated games. It would have been wise to appeal to them. Nonetheless, my question still stands as to how Sony would do that.

        Smiffers Jan 24, 09
They could release an Adult DC, LittleBigPenis and LittleBigTits.

        • 0
          HisServant77 Jan 24, 09
That would just attract the perverts, and pre-pubescent teens, along with the men out there hyped up on libido.

Mature does not equal sex and prn.

    EOM Bassist Nov 26, 08
My opinion is that the reason it might not be selling as well as expected, is for the reason I didn't buy it: Because there was not enough information about what the game was actually ABOUT. I never understood what you could do except build levels online, and then do what with them?
However, I now know what it is about, and I cannot see why people do not buy it other than the reason stated

    RabidChinaGirl Nov 26, 08
I think the game has a lot of potential still, and I would like to see something similar on the 360. While talking to PS3 owners I know on a more personal level, I would ask about their interest in LBP (since there was so much hype in the gaming community). These people ranged from casual to hardcore gamers (a few bought it for the actual games, some for Blu-Ray and... 'cause they thought it looked cool)... and I was disappointed by the fact that most of them had never heard of LBP. When I tried to explain what the game was about or linked them to websites, they just thought it sounded ridiculous/stupid. Seriously, made me very sad. Sony really should have invested way more in advertising this title.

      "Basically, you're a potatosack in a graphically enhanced side-scroller."

I can imagine why they didn't care.

Yeah, trying to explain the game without a bunch of commentary and vids makes it sound ridiculously shallow.

Revenger of Wastelan Nov 26, 08
I hate this stuff. They go with a very stupid claim, and then they don't even talk about it, they keep talking about themselves.
"Title : LBP is not good.
becuase? Wii has this, this and that..."

Just shut up. And they even dare to confess they are mainstream.

    Zerpent Nov 26, 08
I'll wait for the sales numbers for x-mas before I decide whether or not I think LBP failed. Right now, though, I couldn't care less. It's one of the most fun games ever made.

    kik36 Nov 26, 08
Well the article makes some decent points. I haven't touched LBP in weeks, but to be fair I tend to rotate games a LOT. I just got pissed at the ungluing system in the level editor.....man it tears me up just thinking about it!!! LMFAO

This game hasn't sold because the ps3 is soo expensive. i really want to play it but can't cause my parents won't give me a ps2. i only know one person who has one. he has the game and it's so fun IMO
    • 0
      Cruxis Mana Jan 24, 09
      But the game has sold.

Last I check it had moved around 650k copies.

The 'PS3 is expensive' argument doesn't explain how games such as MGS4 have sold over a million copies.

    *raises hand*

I bought it, my attempt to buy it should have fixed the game for success because of my epicness
