What's ahead for Square Enix?

chautemoc | November 26, 2008 | Blog | PC Playstation 2
Neoseeker/GameGrep's own Krunal starts off our new blog feature with this post about Square Enix's place in the gaming world, past, present and future.

For the "deets" on the blogs, head over here and get involved, if you're into that sorta thing!
Everyone remembers Final Fantasy X one of the most renowned and loved Final Fantasy title out there - at least on the PS2. The games that were released after that FFXI & FFXII were good, but many didn't consider FFXI to be even part of the series (I know I didn't), and FFX-2 & FFXII got mixed feelings (though I was one that loved and enjoyed both the games, albeit I didn't like the story of either too much, the gameplay was addictive enough for me). The one thing many people bring up and remember to this day is - FFX was Square-Soft, FFXII was Square-Enix. The merger of Square Soft and Enix seems to have been a "curse" of a sort for the two companies - at least many people think of it as such.

Hm, i thought FFX had a good storyline but i wasn't too much of a fan of the gameplay and that i could 1hit kill the final boss.

FFXII Was a good game in my eyes, i thought its storyline was good, the combat system was good and quite interesting and that it was a overall a good game but obviously others think differently.

I need to pick up FFX-2 again, i kinda got like half-way through it and stopped playing its gathering dust in my FF Collection atm.
Lets all keep our fingers crossed and hope that FFXIII turns out good.

Then you're not a fan of the old time ATB gameplay? Cause thats what FF10 was all about. In fact FF10 is the last game to have that system like the old days with FF9,8,7, and FF10 was the last FF game that was made from the creator iirc. I loved the battle the added switching characters during battles was awesome. FF10 for me is the second best FF game I ever played with FF7. Both tied for the best for me, and last best FF game to release. FF10-2 was fun but could have been made into a movie. The ending of FF10 was sad and I didn't like it, but the sequel wasn't necessary. Not to mention the game wasn't that great.

FF12 was graphically the best, the combat system was different and the like. It was an good game for a online MMO which it what it felt like but for offline game. It was very out of place imo. The storyline was filled far too much political stuff then Fantasy. No balance like FF7 or 8.

I don't think it was actually possible to 1 hit kill the final boss in FFX. First since Jecht has two forms, and second because what you actually define as the last boss of that game is debatable.

Not a bad article, nice to know about the NeoBlogging thing seeing as I wasn't aware of it, but it needed a bit more length. More insight.

Any reason you replied to my comment Silver? It seems you're replying to FFF.

I can't remember any real reason, I probably meant to reply to FinalFantasyFanaticc.

FB I agree with you finally! haha, I too feel that FFX was a fantastic game. Probably one of my favourites as well ( I really enjoyed 8 and 9) but to me FFXII wasn't the greatest. I bought it and the story, as you said, was too political. I am ashamed to say that I didn't even finish it.

I really hope they get back to their old roots and start making some good FF games with good characters, good story, you could even dumb down the graphics for all I care. Thats the problem they focus too much on the actual look of the game and not the feel of it.

Ok so i may have exaggerated about FFX's final boss and being able to 1 hit kill it, you can 1 hit kill his first form and 2 hit kill his final form. Yu-Yevon was total boredom having to do what you do. The best thing Square done with FFX was add the Dark Aeons to it, they added alot more hours to the gameplay and were extremely fun to hunt and kill.

O and im a BIG fan of the old time ATB gameplay, tbh with you the ATB gameplay is what makes a Final Fantasy game what it is. Ditching the ATB on FFXII was quite a weird experiment for Square to try but it sort of worked out alright on FFXII it wasn't brilliant but it was still a good battle system yet it did have its flaws as they were trying to combine the Kingdom Hearts style battle system with FF.

O and your right about FFX-2, they shouldn't have made a follow up to FFX as the ending of it kind of wraps everything up nicely yet they decided to carry it on stupidly and thats probably why playing through that game i decided to put it down.

And as my favourite FF's go one of them is FFVII, i know alot of people say that but i have my own personal reasons to go along with it as well as the fact that its a great game and my other favourite is definetly FFVI as it has probably one of the best FF storylines created and can't be beaten.

I think the whole fact that there was no real "romance" in the story sort of made it that bit worse. FFVII - Tifa/Aeries + Cloud, FFVIII - Squall + Rinoa, FFIX - Garnet + Zidane, FFX + FFX-2 - Tidus + Yuna, FFXII - uhh... Vaan and Penelo already had something going prior to the story, so it's not really the love angle that I was hoping for... that game was devoid of love, and full of politics... and I hate politics... though I must stress that regardless of the story I did enjoy the game.

I actually hated the plot in FFX. It started off good but broke down at the end.

Actually, I believe that all Final Fantasy Final Bosses have a tendency of being far too easy. The real bosses are the "side bosses". In FFVII it was the weapons, in FFX it's Penance (in the PAL version only though...)

FFXII... well I think you could probably create a gambit that'll ensure you don't die, and make it so that you come back to your tv after a few hours, and you'll have won... not really the way to go, but I still enjoyed the setting of gambits and playing for myself rather than relying too much on gambits.

Far too many loading screens are the biggest problem, which is probably what I loved the most about FFXII - near to no loading screens.

With FFXII, my favourite part was the battle system. I didn't play the game for the story but for the battle system, since it was in my opinion quite fun.

That said TLR's battle system is quite unique and looks incredibly fun, I may get the game when it goes down to around £30, but I doubt I'll be getting it straight off the bat. From where I stand, as fun as it is, unless they fix the bugs with the Unreal Engine, it's just not worth it.

That's Namura whose working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII. There's a reason as to why I didn't express my worries for that game, and that's because I absolutely loved Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, and the same team is working on FFvsXIII, which to me seems to be a good omen.

Thanks for posting my blog up Sean. I'd have done it when I created it, but the blogs were still going final testing before it was announced

Hopefully more people will make blogs, and hopefully I'll be making more blogs like these. Any comments/criticisms appreciated.

      No problem dude.
I saw that 'Grep It' button and decided to give it a whirl.

They seem to be very popular so far, even though there's little to no exposure on the feature as of yet..can't wait to see it more fleshed out/prominent.

Well that was something I always thought was extra, but then again I do suppose that also the part of the fantasy package these games are supposed to have. In which case you're right. The character development was another mistake within FF12. The only two I thought was somewhat developed was Fran and Balthier but that's it really. It seems mostly everyone else just decided to join the team for their own reasons. Penelo I still don't understand her reason. She just followed Vaan when he wanted to become a sky pirate and had no goals of her own other then to be with him. Which as you said, was known from the beginning we started playing the game.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed playing FF12, it just wasn't like the other FF's I've came to know and love.
