With the enhanced update of Chrono Trigger DS just out, Siliconera is speculating on whether or not they're a good idea as opposed to cranking out brand new stuff. What do you think?

This week, Chrono Trigger DS has been added to the growing list of SNES and NES rpgs Square Enix is re-releasing or porting. How do you feel about this? Do you think that Square Enix should work on some new IPs, or is what they’re doing sufficient for you?

Jenni: While it is nice to see the re-release, I’m not excited. Its basically the same game I already own for the PS1. Since there were no earth-shattering updates, it could easily have just been re-released the on the Wii’s Virtual Console for 800 points/$8. I think re-releases are a good thing, because it could mean a new generation of gamers are getting to experience exceptional titles. But a limit should be established. While one re-release/port is okay, it can be a bit ridiculous when a single game, with only minor alterations, appears on three or four different systems.

What Square Enix needs to get on is a new entry in the Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross storyline. The company knows the series is beloved and has a strong fanbase, so they need take a step back from Final Fantasy spin-offs and bring a new Chrono game to either the PS3 or Wii. If the company can revive Parasite Eve, it can revive the Chrono series as well.

      True that.
Plus the major slowdown made it about unplayable, or so I've heard.

Also, the DS remake has its fair batch of new content that the original game did not have.

I for one enjoy all of the remakes on the DS at the moment, the remake of FFIV is fantastic and this Chrono Trigger remake is astounding.

It's an update really (though I made the same mistake in the article originally).

All the Chrono Trigger port has added is a new dungeon and some very minor things. Re-releases are completely *bleep*. If you're going to remake a game, then do so.

I noticed no slow down in the PS1 version. Though I didn't play it much since I own the original SNES version and played it to death.

I have no problems with re-releases though. It is a good way for the company to make a bit of extra money. And of course as always the simple solution is if you don't like them don't buy them. If companies aren't making money off of it they will stop doing it.

YAY! Chrono Trigger was badass, remakes of good games are only good if they don't make the game bad....so yea i say YAY!

I'd rather they release the game on both VC AND the PSN (worldwide). There are many games that never made it to the EU that we could get finally.

Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross are universally beloved?

      Why are you inserting words?

I'd nay, cancel all the remakes and use the extra resources to speed up XIII and Versus, as well as getting some more original projects out.

That would just slow the XIII and Versus XIII teams down, more than anything else.

A DS programmer isn't going to prove much use in developing a PS3 game.

Crappy help is better than no help at all, and writers, artists, voice actors and executive staff could still be added painlessly with little difference to what title they are making.

Why would they need writers for a game that was fully developed almost 20 years ago? They don't even really need artist so much since all the art is basically done save for any new content. Frankly the team that worked on the port wouldn't need much of a crew to begin with. And the FF13 and other games already have full crews.

The only valid argument would be to have the port crew work on another new IP. And even then what's the point? Why waste man power on a new IP that might fail when you can port a game that would be a gareenteed winner?

I say yay. That way I can play better versions of older games I never got to play.

    I love FFIV on DS.

I wish there was a PSP version of Suikoden outside of Japan.Suikoden is one of my most wanted games that is almost impossible to find without paying an arm and a leg for it.

i say yay. Eventually theyll get ff7 and 8 remade and i will forgive them for the pain they cause me every year. On second thought theyll probly stop remaking them after ff6 and i will hate them even more if that is even possible.

Ok, I just have to say it, Square needs to bring to the PSP or heck PSN, one of the greatest never-played RPGs in their lineup that FIRST introduced Invalice.... VAGRANT STORY!

I will continue to turn up my nose at Square ports, until they start bringing the good ones they neglected to the forefront.

    VAGRANT STORY!

      FFT came first.

The PSX FFs have enough glitches and goofiness that they probably should be higher on a remake list than most of the others.

That's all Square Enix has been riding on lately. Remakes and spin offs. Their new games have not been so epic. I noticed this ever since Squaresoft merged with Enix. If we were to judge them only by their new game series since they merged with Enix, they wouldn't be so great. That's why I really don't know if FF13 may be as great as it's made out to be.

I don't get why they don't just make new games. Or do they plan to just continually remake the same game every ten years ?

They have been making new games. But all their new stuff sucks or is just whatever...
