OXCGN Historian teacher and writer David Hilton takes a light-hearted look at the next iteration of Assassin's Creed (2) and throws a few settings it 'could' be held in around for everyone to lose their heads over. Aztecs, Babylon, Rome, Samuari's??.

Plus a poll on where you might like to see the next game set in.

Slip over now, take a read and also join in on the poll and discussion.

Okay, so that is referring to the Scarlet Pimpernel, a fictional English nobleman who disguises himself and sneaks French noblemen (and women) out of France back to England, confounding the silly peasants-turned-rulers of post-revolutionary France.

But what if he was really Altair, previously the assassin climbing and stabbing his way through Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus during the Crusades in the game Assassin’s Creed? After all, they both sneak around during a chaotic violent period of history trying to do a greater good.

Well, if it was to be him, he’d have to have aged incredibly well, found the fountain of youth or a time machine, or be a product of ancient cloning technology. Or maybe he’d actually be a relative following in his footsteps several generations later.

I think people need to appreciate AC for what it is, an intriguing game set in an amazing time period. The scope of the game was immense, environments beautifully realised and the city-scapes were faithful recreations of historically important locations.

It was for me more than just a game, it was an experience.

I would personally love to see AC2 (or 3) go to ancient Greece, specifically during the upheaval of the Ionian Revolt and subsequent beginning of the Persian Wars...

    Spartaaaaaaaaannnnnnnn!!!!

Naked Altair with big bulging muscles!

Just kidding. There is so much history offers to games and yet we tend to get over the top future scenarios and magical fantasy most of the time.

Many gamers want fictional affairs, not history lessons. But having said that, games can offer ways of exploring history in a fashion that does allow learning to take place. This is being shown a great deal in the classrooms of today. So major games development houses using the same premise is great. So please do NOT turn it into some inain Ninja hack-n-slash . .. please.

I actually thought this article was going to looks at alternatives to the French Revolution, but it pretty much just discusses it. I think its the perfect setting, two sides, lots of chaos, plenty of opportunities for new gameplay mechanics.

Well it sort of opens it up for discussion really, looking at some alternatives like Rome, Aztecs, Constantinople, etc, letting ppl vote on the poll and also neter into discussion on the subject. It'd end up way too long if we took each area into account.

But that doesn't mean we won't as time moves on, and we find new information or come up with plausable possibilities . .I also agree that the time period could well be of f=benefit . .

GIEF NINJAS! I think an Asian setting would be pretty awesome. The French Revolution would be my second choice.

The ending of Assassin's Creed did have some cryptic s leading one to believe it may have an asian flavour or head that way . .so who knows . .I just don't want it to end up like Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry etc . .we have enough of those games to sink battleships. Unique games like AC need to stay true to their original concepts, as lofty as they may well be, they still need to stay true to them.

It would be like turning say Forza 2 into a NFS series . .it just wouldn't cut it anymore.

Who said that it was gonna end up like NG or DMC? Anyway, majority of the story of Assassin's Creed is based on the memories of Desmond's ancestors, so that means there's more other than Altair from earlier time periods. That said, the story could take place anywhere.

I think the French Revolution just wouldn't do. It's too modern. What I thought was awesome about AC was that you were kicking ass back in the day. There would be guns in the French Revolution- BORING!

There are many better time settings, Roman I think would rule. The only problem is is it really has to take place AFTER the Crusades, so as to make sense.

I love the setting from the first game because I have never before seen in pulled off so well in another game. Plus It did a great job in bringing you in on how people lived in that time period and location (which has always intrigued me) so if they can do it agian, but a in a new place and time period that has hardly ever been done before, I would love that. Including france.

And blackfalcon, I don't think it would be too modern. Its almost perfect. But if you think about it, the real story took place in a 2012.

I just hope there is none of this "blending in" I was not a huge fan of that. Also I prefer the attacking of that in Fable 1+2 as well as LOZ series.

Yeah I have to admit I liked the Holy Land medieval setting. I hope they stay true to the level of historic detail in the next one, while adding some gameplay elements that are less repetitive. It would have been my GOTY if it had been less repetitive in missions.

I also was not a huge fan of collecting the flags (as I have not beaten the game yet anyways).

I always thought that Japan would be great. Fits the 'Assassin' theme neh? Ninjas would be awesome

They could add more stealth focus too (since that is the point of being a ninja, stealthiness and quick, undetected kills)....

Blending was the worst. I hate how slow melee seemed to be. The horse riding was fun.

Assassin's Creed was a freakin awesome game, especially the graphics. No one in their right mind would argue.

A re-make can only be virtuous.
