If you have been behind in the Mirror's Edge news lately, you may not have seen the above picture. On the left is an image of Faith from the game, on the right is an edited interpretation of what a fan believes Faith would look like if she was made to appeal to Easterners.

When EA's Tom Farrer was sent the edited picture of Faith, he wasn't pleased at all, responding with: "We wanted her to be attractive, but we didn’t want her to be a supermodel... It was just kind of depressing that someone thinks it would be better if Faith was a 12-year-old with a boob job."

Farrer's comments have sent Japanese forums into overdrive, with many critisizing Farrer and Faith's original appearance. Below are a few of the translated comments from Japanese gamers...

"There's no way Japanese would accept a face like that."

"That woman is extremely homely."

"Not sure if moe-style is necessary, but that original face is awful."

"She's totally flat."

"I kinda like the character. I don't think Asian equals ugly."

"*bleep* off Asian beauty!"

"Man, the Mirror's Edge protagonist is way creepy... It's like some Asian female stereotype."

"The eyes are way too Asian."

"Everyone knows Western female game characters are ugly."

"That face makes her look 40 years old."

"For Westerns, there's not much difference between the faces that eat kimchi and the faces that eat soy sauce."

"The original is better looking."

"Slant eyes for Asians is the same as big lips for black people."

"If you really sit and think about it, in America, Lucy Liu is an angel, right?"

"Who cares about this one game person's opinion."

"But foreigners think slant eyes are sexy."

"Americans like aggressive faces?"

"Well, Japanese people have the stereotype that Americans are fat, bald and clumsy. It's the same."

Here is an interesting thought. Why does everyone assume that the character has to be attractive? Is it because she is female that she must be a busty supermodel? Can't she be an average woman with average looks? Hell, why can't she just be ugly and that be acceptable?

I see plenty of men and women everyday that I think are ugly. So why must movies comics and video games portray some unrealistic image of beauty? Why can't video game characters be unattractive?

Seriously, they all operate under this assumption that Faith is supposed to be hot. Did anyone post Farrer's comments to them? They don't even see his point! UGH... reading some of that just puts my logic in a bind. Does not compute...

Sadly it isn't surprising so many of them prefer the second image. She looks like a freaking anime character. Ugh, I want to find some of those people and bring down the hand of realism on their asses.

    I completely agree, Koloth!

I think the Faith from the game is VERY attractive myself (and get irritated that for most "gamers" adding 10-20 lbs to the breast makes a character "attractive" to them).

Apart from the Tatoos and all, The game-Faith looks real and attractive (not one for tatoos). The fact that she looks a bit real or down-to-earth or isn't hyped up on hormones with a boob job and wearing less cotton than found in an aspirin bottle, makes it even better. It's a nice change from the "Oh, well all attractive women need to look like this" garbage that media throws at people and women.

EDIT: I do have to say that the image on the right, the eyes look more real and Asian-like I think.

      HAHA True

I suppose with the game being so different and being a hit, people will do that with it's character. I may have to rent this game sometime. The demo was nice, but . . . too many unfinished games to deal with right now.

I can't believe she is causing so much drama over just her looks. Like they really matter. If the demo is any indication you don't even really see her 90% of the time anyway.

Honestly I wasn't planning on getting this game. But now I just might have to. Seems like everyday I read something new about the game or the character.

Yeah I didn't see her in the demo from what I recall. The game seems fun enough. It's just so odd how much effort people put into worrying about how a fictional character looks rather than any game play elements.

I'm definitely going to get the game, but most likely wait until price drops a fair amount.

No wonder JRPG's are failing these days it's apparent what Japanese gamers care about and it's not good games, aslong as the game has a few characters with symmetrical facial features and some big breasts that have their own physics engine governing bounce and roll they will buy it, even Kojima pulled up that making Naomi an absolute sex godess in the 4th game to appeal to the Japanese.

    ROFL! Wow, just wow...

I wrote the Faith and Feminism editorial, if that's any indication of how I feel regarding those opinions. Then again, Asia has always been very misogynistic, and we all know the Japanese love beautiful people. But hey, Japan, pedophilia hentai, YAY! No, no she's not really 12, she just LOOKS it! Don't mind the tentacles raping her.

And what the HELL is up with these comments:

"Everyone knows Western female game characters are ugly."

^Sorry we don't like our men and women to look an androgynous pop star? Don't understand?

"For Westerns, there's not much difference between the faces that eat kimchi and the faces that eat soy sauce."

    ^ SPEAKING of racist...

Side note, "feminism" isn't an Asian issue, and it's definitely not because men and women are treated equally!

I seriously can't keep looking at this article. I'm about to blow a *bleep*ing fuse right now. I'm just glad there's a few sensible comments in there though... gives me an inkling of hope.

Now this is speaking of racism.

"Slant eyes for Asians is the same as big lips for black people."

Why did this have to come up? How did Black stereotypes get involved in the looks of a fictional Asian character?

      God damn racisms.

I find it odd that alot of the Japanese commentors found Faith's slanted eyes to be stereotypical or offensive. 90%+ of Japanese people have slanted eyes. It's not a stereotype - It's just the truth. And it's not a bad thing, just like it's not a bad thing that most Westerners have rounded eyes.
        • 0
          Storm Dec 5, 08
I suppose for Faith to be "accepting" of the slanted eyes she'd have to dress more provactively, have bigger boobs, and the like.

It's rather shocking to read these comments, had no idea where their mindset about us or general audience was. I mean, I'm somewhat judging them myself with how they'd like Faith to be, but sheesh, some act as if their kind is god's gift to Earth. Where's the equality?

          RabidChinaGirl Dec 5, 08
I didn't grow up in Asia so my values are for the most part heavily influenced by Western society. But just to answer your question Storm (which I found pretty funny because it's so ironic), Japanese used to believe they were god's gift to Earth, and their leader was the descendant of the sun goddess. Traditionally, Asians have a massive superiority complex that isn't reserved only for "fat, stupid, bald" Westerners, but other Asians as well... despite how they act on the outside. Humility is an etiquette, but even second generations like myself have some influence from these traditional racist values.

Just as feminism isn't a social issue in Asia, neither is "racial equality."

Not saying everyone is like that. God, I hope not everyone is or we're royally screwed. Yeah people hate on Americans who think the US is #1, running around with the US flag on their cars, shirts, etc. but racial superiority isn't a new concept. Japanese think they're better than Chinese, Koreans, etc. Koreans think they're better than Japanese, blah blah blah, Taiwanese think they're better than--... you get the idea.

Can't speak for the rest of the world, but it seems like a lot of people have that mindset regarding their fellow human beings. Which is just sad.

I see, thanks RabidChinaGirl. Heh, looks like it's almost become a norm to have a critical take on the international. For sure, where we were taught and how we grew up affect our views, and I'd likely be annoyed by the flag-bearing U.S. residents if I wasn't living here. Heck, I am a little annoyed by those who believe that U.S. is #1, we truly don't have anything to brag about at the moment (terrible economy and such).

shes fugly imo. she looks like she could put an eye out with her cheekbones.

lets just fill every video game with unattractive characters for the rest of time and see just how fast it gets old.

the game is pretty cool tho, and i'd definitely buy it after several price drops (too damn short for 60$).

Shadow of Death Dec 5, 08
I like both of the versions, for different reasons. And no, bigger breasts isn't one of them >_>

Anyhow, this isn't the opinion of EVERY Japanese person. Just some of them.

And yes, cultural and personal preferences do come into play.

In America, it seems there is a strong preference for busty blonds....Not for everyone, but it is the most commonly preferred type, I think.

This isn't all about how sexy she looks, some comments talk about her being a stereotypical Asian woman do they not? So its not all begging for bigger boobs
  • 1
    Gamesta100 Dec 5, 08
I don't particularly find her attractive, but at the same time I have never thought to myself, "I wish she was better looking", or this game would be better if she was hot".

I'll admit that I do like attractive female game characters, but playing as an unattractive character doesn't make a game any worse.

I also don't care about a game characters chest size.I'll admit that I did like Lara Croft with bigger breasts, but making them smaller hasn't impacted on the series in the slightest.

I enjoy a game for the game, not for how attractive the lead character is.

A GIRL IN A VIDEO GAME THAT'S NOT MENT TO BE SEXY?!?!?!

Holy shit... everything I know is wrong! What happened? Has the world gone mad? Soon hamburgers will start eating people and cats will chase dogs. Also, Mexico, The Moon, and Gotham City will all become American states, and Nintendo will release Mother 3 international.

    Final Blade Dec 6, 08
I agree with Koloth about the average women with average looks then the overused busty supermodel.

But I think the reason why some gamers tend to want a female character to be active is to relate to them better, since they're in with their taste on looks. While I can appreciate good looks for gaming females like Stella in FF13 game, I don't believe all females must look like the supermodels. I just personally think some people just relate better to the character if she fit their tastes.
I mean can anyone here really relate to a game character if they're ugly and unattractive to you? I sure as hell don't give them any time or day to relate to them, no offense to them, but then its just game characters. I'm not like this outside of gaming to real women.

I'm not saying this is accurate or factual, its just my opinion on why people like the supermodel attractiveness.
