The editor-in-chief at Game Focus gives his opinion on the IGN review debacle, and discusses the importance of actually reading before posting content that may contain factual errors.

The North American division of IGN faced numerous negative comments from their community and decided to pull down their review of Worldwide Soccer Manager 2009 [GG: aka Football Manager 2009].

After the game received an abysmal rating of 2/10, the gaming site had to do some backtracking and write an apology letter since the reviewer, apparently, totally missed the point of the game.

Why we report this? Because we also review games and we would like to point out that reviewing games isn’t as easy as it may seem. Everyone is human, has the right to their own opinion and of course, to make mistakes in the way. But where I’m very disappointed is in the fact that no one over at IGN decided to do a back check before validating the review online, especially when the game received a 9/10 score on the UK division of the site.
That's the disadvantage of running such a large network as IGN, I suppose, no?

We all have our personal opinions on how we feel about games and how we think they should be, but IGN is a professional site and is expected to have professional reviewers. A 2 out of 10 for a good game because the author doesn't know about the series and wants it to be completely different is the work of an amateur and someone who shouldn't be writing for IGN. That's the kind of review that a reader would make in that section where people would just give them a ton of thumbs down, not an actual review that IGN represents.
