IGN.com's PlayStation team have recently released an article with their thoughts on how the PS3 can get to the top of the battle of the gaming consoles. Their main argument involves five companies, Konami, Square Enix, Capcom, Electronic Arts and Sony themselves, and what these companies can do to improve the quality of games on the PS3, and the PS3's popularity.

US, December 8, 2008 - For two game generations, Sony established itself as the industry leader: the popularity of the PSone carried over to the rampant success of the PS2. Of course, many people expected a similar situation for the PS3, but the transition for the latest system hasn't been as seamless as people expected. While its best of times from the past two consoles hasn't lead to a worst of times now, Sony has committed a number of mistakes, such as a reversal on its backwards compatibility policy, a loss of system exclusive titles and a staunch refusal to counter price drops by competitors. These stumbles have helped Microsoft strengthen its position as a rival in the HD gaming arena, and has also helped Nintendo reestablish itself as a major player to be reckoned with.

I'm seriously questioning the intelligence of this writer. The way this guy goes on about the need for Sony to broker some deal with Squeenix, EA, and Capcom for exclusive rights to there top sellers is just frankly *bleep*.
the only thing he says that makes any sense is that they should pursue further metal gear solid franchise's and that Sony should continue funding there first party developers and the need for a price drop on the console.

It's all about exclusive rights =/ This guy clearly doesn't realise there's MORE to saving the PS3 than exclusivity...

At the end of the day its all down to whoever has the most money gets the best for their console, seeing as Sony are focusing on spending more on first party development due to not wanting to fork out loads of cash for exclusivity like Microsoft do.

You do know that Sony have probably spent more making Killzone 2 alone than Microsoft have spent on exclusive content and other nice stuff. Just because Sony is focusing on first party doesn't mean they cannot afford it. They can and could easily out compete Microsoft for content but they believe that third party content is good but first party content is what matters and so far i am believing them.

Sony have a lineup of 20+ first party titles coming next year and most of which have the power to be as epic and as good as Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resistance 2 this year, Microsoft have the visible show of money but that does not mean Sony hasn't got the same financial guns.

To add from BlackLabel, Sony shines best at its first party games. Sony has spend load of cash alone on Killzone 2, that's not even as much as God of War 3 Sony is paying for. We all know the Success for God of War from last gen, even PSP Chains of olympus was a massive success. SCEE stated that they rather use the money to push out fantastic first party exclusives like LBP then pay for extra content which will eventually make it's way on PS3 version at the end, or the competitor. Granted that statement doesn't make us like them more, they have a hefty list of first party titles coming in 09, and that's always been Sony's bread and butter.

As for the article, I can see how Konami and SE might help them if they get some exclusives from old classics, but I'm not sure about Capcom and EA. They're known to be multiplatform, and I don't see them making anything specifically exclusive for PS3.

But if EA can bring Road Rash to the PSN, I will literally orgasm. I always believed that game was one of the best titles EA has ever made.

As for the price drops, it's not possible atm. Maybe sometime middle to late 09, but not now. PS3 has sold extremely well this year with the price they have now, makes no sense atm to lower the price if the system is doing well.
Bringing back Backwards Capability isn't entirely out of the question . I can see it working and helping, although Sony is committed with PS3 games atm.

I don't see how the PS3 needs to be 'saved'. It seemed just fine this year to me...

I agree, but the 360 and Wii are going better. All the PS3 needs is some better games tbh, and I hear that they will get some in 09.

A price drop on the console itself would definitely help.

Like I said, it got lots of great games this year, a few of which turned out to be exclusive (LBP, MGS4, R2, Valkyria Chronicles). Sometimes I feel that some are purposefully ignoring things...

Sony isn't particularly worried about what happens with the PS3, because they're confident that their next console will "right the ship" just fine due to the decreased production costs for the Cell and Blu Ray drives.

I don't think any of the console manufacturers care. Gaming is probably the only industry where profit from the hardware is not an issue, i mean no other industry in the world would an organization come out and seem almost happy with a $3 billion loss thanks to a machine they built, they know that they will make the money back slowly and surely on games.
