Many believe the PS3 has yet to show it's true power, but is that really the case? Ben Dutka, of psxextreme.com, believes that the PS3 will reveal it's true potential next year, and here's why ...

(Go to the source for the full article)

Those of you who remember the early days of the PS2 will remember the ongoing joke amongst those who didn't like the console. It went something like, "oh yeah, where's all that 'hidden power'?" They said this because Sony promised the system was capable of a lot more than the launch titles presented, and obviously, the likes of God of War II, Final Fantasy XII and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater can't really be compared to the likes of Summoner, Tekken Tag Tournament and TimeSplitters. It's like comparing two different platforms, really, which essentially verified Sony's claims. However, most just remember that old joke, and were quick to apply it to the PlayStation 3. Of course, PlayStation consoles are notoriously difficult to develop for initially, so the jokes endure but typically, Sony has the last laugh.

I'm sick of this 'true power' talk. It won't be used to its full power until by the time the PS4 is out, just like the PS2. It'll take time.

      Hey...don't joke...

      It'll happen one day...I hope...

In all seriousness, it's not Sony's fault that developers aren't using the PS3's technology to it's full potential.

I know that no one's directly said that it's Sony's fault on here, but I think that's what a lot of people think, and it's just not true. That's not to say that Sony isn't at fault for any screw-ups.

At the same time, a game using all of the PS3's available resources doesn't directly equate to the games being great, so this really doesn't mean much.

Like Uncharted 2 is being hyped to use all of the PS3's "power", and everyone seems to think it's going to be so great because of that, which is, IMO, a bit foolish. I think it's more dependent on how developers use the hardware.

Of course it can help, though....

      Final Blade Dec 14, 08
Technically 2008 did show what the PS3 is capable of if you're going by Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2. So in reality your annual ritual joke failed and backfired.
Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, God of War 3....etc will continue the cycle.

The cycle as in 2010 being the Year of the PS3? OMG I can't wait for that article when it's posted later next year! I'm so hyped up for it! I'm hyped up for an article all about hype!

I know you're joking, but I'm just saying those game did show what the PS3 is capable of, even if people didn't enjoy them.

OMG how can I forget Uncharted, White Knight and WarDevil..
Damn those games also showed PS3 power.

DragoniteBallZ never said that the PS3 didn't show it's power this year, he just showed the fact that we also got an article like this last year.

That has nothing to do with this, people make articles for their own reasons. I can make one as well, but then that would be a blog.

I always thought the PS2 had good looking games shortly after its release. Certainly they weren't all good, and some series kept getting better and better looking as the console got older and the developers got more used to the system. It started early with games like Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, Ico, TimeSplitters, and Twisted Metal Black.

You could only see the change in the PS2's games when the PS3 came out, I reckon. I looked back, for example, at the first Smackdown! Vs. Raw game, and then to SVR2008, and the change in EVERYTHING was enourmous. So the PS2 WAS evolving, in a lot of ways.

Why is it that every year they say the PS3 is going to show it's true power the next year? I won't be surprised if it's true power will only be revealed at like 2105.

    McClubbin Dec 14, 08
So what was the PS3 doing all this time then? Taking a nap or what? But seriously, they could have done a lot more by this time though.

The PS3 has more than enough games to show off its "power".

    We've seen it already.

Honestly I just don't know why theres so much trash talk about the PS3 (not just here but everywhere).

Granted they aren't as succesfull as the Wii or as reliable as the 360(and I use the term reliable very loosely) But it still is doing a good if not great job.

A diamond in the rough if you ask me.

I like both the 360 and the PS3 a lot, personally.

      Red 9 Dec 15, 08
Of course man, it's only the coolest thing to do. If you wanna be cool, you gotta hate the PS3.

      [/sarcasm] (for the simple-minded)

Anyway, KZ2, MGS4 and Uncharted 2 are just perfect examples of the fact that the true potential is already here. Why we'd have to wait until 2009 for that is beyond me...

PS3 might be my favorite console of the three, but i hate it when shitheads from Sony try to prove something by telling lies.

I don't think Sony themselves actually said that...either that or it was just anothing stupid PR guy talking out of his ass again...

    Bale Fire* Dec 17, 08
The PS3 has already shown its true power in 2009, sure games will keep getting better, but MGS4, LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2 were all huge hits both in terms of power and aclaim, and showed the PS3 can sure do some serious shit when the developers know their stuff.

    DragoniteBallZ Dec 17, 08
The only one of those games that is truly 1080p is Little Big Planet. The rest of those games mentioned are all barely even 720p. I wouldn't say that's displaying PS3's true power.
    • 0
      Final Blade Dec 17, 08
Since when was 1080p a showcasting of a console abilities? It's very two different things.
      • 0
        DragoniteBallZ Dec 17, 08
Because a powerful 1080p game is theoretically the PS3's true power. What I see in those games mentioned. I don't see anything in those games that we haven't seen in games on the 360 or PC with exception some of those games cannot fit into one DVD disc.
