OXCGN writer looks at the current situation with Xbox 360 sales and the declining current sales of the PS3. Focusing on the need for all 3 major platforms if we are to see the market move ahead.

What does this mean? how will it affect sales this Christmas?, will there be continual slip in PS3 sales?

Slip over to the site and check out the article, not a XBox fanboi PS3 bashing, jy=ust an honest look at the current situation.

I can almost hear the the howls of “traitor!” from Xbots now, and the PS3 fanboy missionaries licking their lips in anticipation of a possible convert. For a writer on an Xbox site to say “the PS3 must survive” may seem unusual, but that’s exactly what I’m saying and I have my reasons.

I have all three next gen consoles, but I would be lying if I didn’t say I favour my 360 and that I cheer when it is doing well. Having admitted my bias though, if the current economic crisis and financial losses Sony is taking forces them to jettison support for the PS3 or future consoles, I see a bleak future for gaming.

From a gamer perspective, three on the market will keep them on their toes to deliver the best games to make the sales. I don't believe at all it comes down to which is better, it is more of a question which console will provide us with quality games.

And I was fooled into thinking the PS3 was just getting on its good foot this Fall, when in reality it's apparently "declining."

I think the competition has brought out the best in the companies involved, we certainly can't complain with all the fantastic games just released and still coming out.

Its like a Free Mason conspiracy!
Though we all support our respective consoles, we can't live without competition should the only games console become lazy and develop bad games

Why are articles like this even made? They are absolutely pathetic, oh my the Playstation 3 had a sales decline even though it sold more than it has done in previous months that makes sense to me! Just because the beloved Xbox 360 sold more because of nice deals doesn't mean the Playstation 3 sales are in decline far from it.

Though what people should really care about is the games i mean we all own one of the consoles here, so if we are all so happy with our purchases shouldn't we enjoying them and not comparing petty stats and making up news for the sake of sounding unbiased. What i read in that title is "Xbox 360 Owns, PS3 Here As To Not Look Like Fanboys!" which is another one of my pet hates, sites pretending to be unbiased when they clearly are.

Anyway enjoy the games and *bleep* the monthly sales figures thats what i'm going by these days, i know what i like and i like what i bought i don't need to justify it with sales figures and i don't need to read articles to make me feel better about my purchase.

    @ Blacklabel

I think the article states its bias but is arguing that if the PS3 is in trouble that is a bad thing for gaming because we need competition. Perhaps you need to read it again? Awfully defensive aren't you?

Well you obviously don't read our site, we gave MGS4 the highest score (9.8/10 - we do not give out a perfect 10)we have given a game on the site over a total of 80plus games todate. Go to the site and do a search for MGS4 review then come back and say we're biased.

We're reviewing Resistance 2, Killzone 2, LBP and HOME . . so yes, we're very VERY biased and HATE the PS3 with all our xbox hearts - not . .

Wake up and read the article, it's based around what is "currently" going on within the "industry' as a whole . . .

I'm a Xbox supporter, but I do NOT agree with many choices MS make, and it has made some real terrible ones. As has Sony, and let's not say it hasn't, because it has.

It will NEVER see profit this generation - period. Their CEO and financial ppl have said so time and time agian.

The gaming platform of sony is the ONLY section of Sony that runs at a loss. It lost $US3.2 BILLION in the last QUARTER . .not last year, but last quarter. While every other section of Sony Corp was well in the black, Sony gaming section sunk further into the red.

Their only hope it to make faster inroads into their next iteration, which they are working on now in germany, and get that up sooner than planned. As it's the only way any company cam recover a significant lose on one model. Move to the next one within their initial timeline.

@BlackLabel while I do agree, personally, worrying over the sale numbers is pointless, you clearly miss XboxOZ360 point here. Yes the PS3 had some declining sales, yes the 360 sold very well in November. But the point is, which I and many have said many times, without Sony, MS gaming would be shit, without MS Sony gaming and online service and the like would be shit. Competition fuels better games for US, it also drives the companies to work 120%.

Personally I don't care if the 360 ends up having 50 Million console sold worldwide, and PS3 40 million at the end of the generation, but to me that is still a win for Sony and the PS3.
Listen I know some people will claim PS3 doesn't have alot of games like 360 or low on the exclusives, but the games I have for the system are great. I didn't feel like it was a waste of money. Even games like Heavenly Sword people sometimes claim was too short or the like, I found that to be epic. 10 in my book for the whole package. Haze is another game I thought was good, overhyped but still worth 7.7-7.9 score. The online for PSN is awesome and technically, for taste, prefer it over XBL but i'm not going to deny that XBL is better to PSN.
And lets be real here, MS, Sony and definitely Nintendo made some bad choices and decisions this generation so far, more so Nintendo tbh. Anyone who claims Nintendo hasn't made any mistakes this generation are blinded and fooling themselves. I'm no fanboy, but clearly, as a Nintendo fan back with the SNES and N64 days, they have disappointed me.

Oh and I disagree entirely with your statement XboxOZ360 about PS3 will NEVER see Profit. That's just ridiculous. It will at the end of it life cycle and support(10 years). There's no denying Sony lost alot of money on the PS3 system itself, but lets be real here, MS also lost 1.98 billion dollars due to the RRoD which that led them to extend the warranty for 3 years.
While that's not as much as 3 billion, that's 2 million away from 2 billion and for any company that's a huge loss. I don't care how much Money MS has, that is a detrimental, so Sony isn't the only ones who lost money from the system.

Sony will gain back the money they lost with PS4 having cheaper yet better quality hardware(Cell processor, GPU, CPU and better Blu-ray drive) it could very well hit at launch $299. If you think Sony is just going to abandon the Cell processor and Blu-ray on PS4 then you're clearly dreaming and Sony already stated this was going to happen.

Completely unrelated note, the girls in the photo attached to the article and the other two are so fake looking.

Final, yes, PS3 will retrun money, but it will be the ps4 that bring Sony back into the black, not PS3, so esentually, PS3 can never make a profit per-se'

MS allopwed - and get this - $US6,2 billion as a worst case senario should the xbox AND the 360 tank . . they are a long way off that, and are now making profit on each unit sold, and made break-even on the consoles production early in 2008, as per schedule.

When interviewed, Head CEO, not branch or section CEO, but Global CEO, Sir Howard Stringer stated quite clearly that, and i can't remember his words "exactly" . . but along the lines of . . . "the PS3 will not see a profit in my lifetime unfortunately . . . to many mistakes were made early on in its life . . .

Now somehow, I'd have a tendancy to believe the Head of Sony over another person down the food chain.

Even Phil Harrison left Sony because of the blatant disregard the Ppl in Japan were taking to choices made by the "Heads of Sony" and were being completely ignored. He pushed for online game play and internet connection "out of the box" for PS3, then the slimline PS2 . .but no . they simply told him he didn't know the Japanese ppl, and that was all that matter . . .

Now he's the Head of Atari and working that into a viable ONLINE business model.

The PS4 will come in at a cheaper price for ppl to get into . . it may not sport the Blu-Ray player, it may . . but what it will have, out of the box will be "complete backward compatability" . . As that is what is being worked on - in part - in Germany atm.

Nintendo will be coming out with a new Wii in 2009, mark my words on that one . That just sound bad doesn't it . .anyhow . . They acan and do bring out models contrary to popular belief that a system MUST have a min 5 yr lifespan.

Sure, they do, and more, but that doesn't mean they will not put out another model to run along side of the current model. They have done it, against industry recomendations over the last several models and years without so much as a hint of looking back.

They know that the technical side of things now days can NOT stay hanging onto an old, out-dated business model of a min 5 yr model life span. The 360 and PS3

MS will most likely have the x720 out in 2010 which falls inline with their white papers XE 30 which were dropped on MS excec's desks in August 2003 . . . which covered the 1st-gen Xbox's short life (on purpose) and the 360's life, and the coming of the following model, which they began working on in Sept/Oct 2005 (in part).

Sony under Sir Howard Stringer has come back from deep loses, which is why he was brought in in the first place, as his speciality is bring sinking companies back to life and prosperity . . . which is what he is doing with Sony.

So, if HE SAYS he believes it won't make a profit in it's lifetime (per-se'), then I think I'd have a desire to believe him, and trust that his plan on bringing Sony's gaming section back to life works.

I might also point out, that Sony's Gaming section came Very VERY close to being closed down due to KK's constant meadling in the PS3 project and sinking more and more money into the project well beyond what he was told or allowed to.

I read that Stringer gave "serious" thought into cutting it down and removing sections in order to "trim the fat" and get it back in shape.

ALl three have made major gaffs, With Aple now seriously looking at gaming as a huge possibility, they need to make sure they are in it for the long run . . remembering that MS has in excess of $US30+ billion cash reserves, and Sony has less that $US3 billion (at the last look on both those figures -they could well have changed, but not significantly given the current economic situation).

SO you can see who has a bigger stick . . . which is how the Big Boys Play - unfortunately. The bigger the stick, the hard the hit . .

I'll be honest here, and only skimmed through that long post, cause majority of it was irrelevant. PS4 will definitely be sporting blu-ray, Sony has literally been the only one truly pushing Blu-ray and so far you can say it is a success. I can't see Sony not adding this into PS4 when PS3 has it, as well as the Cell processor which will be in PS4. This I remember posting on the PS3 general forum.

For some reason I'm not going to believe most things even from the head CEO of Sony. To me, what he stated was the worst case scenario in which to save his ass later on if he had stated "PS3 will definitely recoup sales that was lost during development and sales in the market in this gen and life time" and that wasn't the case. It was hardly something to take at face value imo. It's like Sony saying no price cuts or no Rumble or no this or that but it happening. They just don't want to say something that could come to bite them back on the ass.
