OXCGN writer looks at the history of Fallout the series. The changes, what is new, what is missing, the changes and the additions.
Includes a 15 min history of the franchise that is well worth watching by any gamer wanting to know more about this excellent game.
So head on over to the site now and check it out, when you compare our games of today to the ones of "yesteryear" - most gamers will stop complaining - hopefully.
Fallout 3 is out and weve played and conquered it, but when put under the microscope, how did developer Bethesda fair against the originals by Black Isle?
Black Isles Fallout games were extremely unique and unlike anything the gaming world had ever seen. Only bankruptcy stopped Black Isle from creating more Fallout games, but luckily Bethesda stepped in and purchased the intellectual property (IP) to save the Fallout series.
So now that Fallout 3 has been released, how has it fared in keeping to the canon of the Fallout series that was so brilliantly implemented by Black Isle?

Ontop of that, they don't allow kids to be killed because well, look at the world of today, people would rather spend their lives complaining about a game that gives such an ability and that it could potentially cause teenagers and such to kill etc.
Point is, Beth Soft are covering their backs and actually Beth Soft are very smart in their decision, they don't originally put it in as a feature but by giving the gamers ability to mod the game, they aren't liable for what the gamers make (hence when nude mods appear, Beth Soft says "got nothing to do with us")
To be fair they could have done a heck of a lot of stuff with this game, even more so than current fans and fallout fans ever expected but then we would be talking AO+ style and possibly banned from majority of countries but at the end of the day...back in the 90's people were open minded and accepted those kind of games, now they would rather bitch about them and send the game makers to court
I think BioShock ran the line just perfectly, as did Mass Effect. and Fallout 3 does the same thing, allowing the gamer to make choices, and - in doing so, see that the choices they make have consiquences, and they will have an ongoing affect to the gamer's character as the game progresses.
But unfortunately, the 'public press' get them and push the aspects of the games where choice needs tp be made, but tells the public that the gamer has no choice, and this is how the games runs and is therefore bad.
If they pointed out that it was giving the games an experience similar to what parents are attempting to do with their children (irrespective of age) around being responsible for your actions, the press simply wouldn't sell the papers they do.
It's a sad time we live in where only bad news sell, and good news sits on page 5 or 10 . .
That's why I switch off the news, they seem to mix deaths and crime inbetween the "in other news...Tommy got a medal for swimming today"
Super sweet retrospective!
Well balanced article too, good job.
One thing I have always asked of the crew, if you're going to write something, investigate it first, because you could end up with egg on your face if you don't.
As readers will only read what they want to read and skip the bits they don't want to. SO you need to make sure all bases are covered.
We're gamers first and foremost, not fanbois. We'll have reviews up on Resistence 2, Killzone 2, LBP and HOME, and not done so as to be critical in a bda way, just view them as they are played as if it was a 360 or even a Wii game. ie: How one experiences it.
I like the video on the history of the franchise, as if (??) many younger gamers watch it, they'll see that the games they have in their hands today are fare superior in many many ways to the games of a decade ago.
And that the complaints they have around each blade of grass not moving or the sun not looking real enough, or some other inaine - idiotic nuance about gameplay etc, are just that, silly complaints. As gamers these day have never, ever had it this good, had this many games, of had the hardware and software that can deliver games that can be so life-like, that the other pale in comparison.
I might point out as well, we paid MORE for Fallout and Fallout 2 than we do for the same game (Fallout 3) now . . so in short, stop complaining and start enjoying the games for what they ARE, not what they are NOT. If that makes sense.?
They expectmore because they haven't experienced earlier games and those games, while excellent - in their own great way, are vastly different to games of today, and tomorrow.
Mirror's Edge is another example. If it didn't have big guns, bad boss fights and fighting combos, it was rubbish, when in fact, it was a huge leap forward for the genre' as a game. Yet will no doubt now not have a follow up, yet deserves one.
I think you know what I mean . . ?
But I like to think the majority appreciates games like Mass Effect regardless of how much they push the tech. I mean, they sold well and got a lot of attention yeah? Of course, the majority of gamers are older, no?
Agreed about ME. Im going to play it when the PC version comes out in a few weeks -- but reading all the reviews, Im wondering if it wouldnt have gotten a lot better scores if it had the big guns and all that stuff. To hell with that.
Its getting a sequel though! Two are planned, but at least one is guaranteed basically. It hasnt sold well I dont think but EA has said they're going forward with it anyway, which is great news.
