Stephen Totillo has written up a post that makes some compelling arguments on how Prince of Persia rips off the classic Team Ico title, Shadow of the Colossus. He claims there are even more but couldn't not write them up without spoiling the games.

The actions you commit in both games are similar and similarly contrary to the standard high-body-count activities in mode games.

Both "Prince of Persia" and "Shadow of the Colossus" involve a whole lot of climbing and jumping, punctuated only by brief bouts of violence. In "Shadow of the Colossus," the climbing and killing is primarily set on the backs of giants. In "Prince of Persia" the action is set, more traditionally, on cliffs and towers and other sections of acrobatically-navigated terrain. Only once or twice per area must the Prince fight.

Both the Prince and "Shadow" hero Wander use a large cathedral-like structure as their base of operations. The cathedrals stand before a great plain. The levels of the game (be they wandering giants or climbable towers) lie beyond that plain.

In both games, the seeming death (and resurrection?) of a woman kicks off the plot. The woman, Mono, who has died in "Shadow" doesn't adventure with you. She lies on an altar that sits above the cathedral's outdoor staircase, overlooking the great plain. In "Prince of Persia," the woman, Elika, doesn't lie there. She works with you. Nevertheless, the altar where she would have rested sits above the cathedral's outdoor staircase, overlooking the great plain.

When you get down from the altar, walk down the stairs and out into the field, you need to pick which way to go. How do you do this? Press a button and a light source will point the way. Which game am I talking about?

Either.

I could go on. But to draw even more dramatic comparisons between the two games would require me to spoil both games' plots, which I won't do this close to "Prince of Persia"’s release.

I've played through both games. I've enjoyed both immensely. And I don't begrudge game developers from drawing ideas and designs from each other. Nevertheless, I felt these comparisons needed to be shown, because I haven't seen anything quite like this involving two recent, major games.

This isn't a case of a "Braid" making an explicit homage to "Donkey Kong," a game from one decade playing homage and providing a gameplay twist to the classic level of a classic game from a quarter century ago.

This is one top-tier 21st century development team riffing off another - or ripping them off.

Fair or foul?

Not sure what piece you read, but I think there are some pretty decent points that are fairly specific to just those two games and no others (the only point I could think of another game is the cathedral-like setting as a base, which is sorta like Legend of Zelda II: Adventures of Link... but even then I'm just reaching for a connection to another game).

I kind of wish he would write up a second part that has spoilers, as I don't mind the plot being spoiled a bit.

They're both games. That's clearly a rip off.

I've played both games all the way through and they are almost nothing alike.

REALLY?! SORRY, I FORGOT THAT CLIMBING AND JUMPING HAPPENS IN ALMOST EVERY FORM OF PLATFORMING GAME!

    Nice going.

The cathedral in Shadow is a cathedral but the temple in Prince of Persia is not a cathedral type architecture.

As Darknet pointed out, he only points out small scale things.

    these points are hardly valid.

Firstly, his points suck. Secondly, SoTC beats PoP an day, regardless of what's 'ripped off'.

Hey come on Red that's not fair. SotC beats a lot of games. Will be picking up PoP soon, but from screens I can't really see the comparison.

You know what's funny, though? PoP is a game series that has been out for ages, starting with the early computers. The whole climbing and jumping aspect was really put into play with their games, could even go so far as to say that they 'revolutionized' that style...so if anything SotC ripped off PoP. :/ Remember watching Icons on G4 and hearing about Mechner having his brother do jumping, climbing, and running movements, and imitating them in his game.

SotC was a great game :3 I always got stuck at the colossus in the fields with geysers. Damn thing won't flip! >:[

PoP was around longer, though, so SotC may have mimicked certain scenes or locations.

That's so lame. He just took the main characteristics of an average platform-game based on the past and pointed out that it exists in both games. He could just say "PoP is a ripoff cause both Shadow and PoP are games that you play on consoles".

I couldn't really care less, SotC was an awesome game, and I got PoP as an xmas pressie and I'm loving it loads.
