Sony just can't catch a break. But are the negative news articles warranted? I mean, its been a while since an exclusive game has popped up on the psp, while the DS has loads of them. Seems like Sony are the new MS when it comes to trailing behind the competition. What is going on with Sony this gen? Lack of risk-taking and being creative?

The below quote is a bit asinine. The author even asks why the psp has a optical drive instead of a flash drive, but the majority of the post is pretty much on target.
But lets be fair, some of you are going to say the iTouch isn't meant to be in competetion with the PSP, but Sony pretty much came out saying its a multimedia device just like they claimed the PS3 was a computer. So the comparisons to the iTouch seem fair.

"Whatever happened to the PSP? The device that Sony once touted as "the Walkman for the 21st century" is fast disappearing from popular consciousness, and if you believe the rumors circulating just three-and-a-half years after its launch, it's up for a major rethink in 2009.

But then, set the PSP next to the iPhone or iPod Touch, the year's other big winner in portable gaming, and the PSP's hardware design suddenly looks old hat. Where's the touchscreen? What are all these buttons for? What on earth is the point of this useless analog nub of a joystick? And why, in an age when flash memory is so cheap it practically comes in Cheerios boxes, are we still stuck with a huge, bulky, slow, and noisy optical drive? If you're going to compete by offering a powerful hardware platform, you actually need to outperform the competition. As the iPhone steps into the portable gaming ring, it's already got the PSP on the ropes.

Guess what, Sony: Apple already made the Walkman of the 21st century, and you missed the boat."

I can certainly think of a number of games that are exclusively on the PSP, Final Fantasy: Dissidia being one of which. They could make more of a effort admittedly, but to say that you haven't heard of any exclusives for the PSP in a while is quite farfetch'd.

Also, games teaching you how to cook on the DS are more than welcome to stay exclusive. I never want to learn how to cook, and even if I did, I wouldn't use a game to teach me it, but use a good old fashioned cookbook.

DSi is probably going to dominate this. I mean, warioware with a camera! friggin sweeeet.

      PSPs are noisy, and horrid.

        StarJet Jan 2, 09
The DS has already dominated in sales. You seem like a DS fanboy, but you don't know your facts. How sad...
Anyway, let me counter your "noisy" argument. The tiny, yet audible sound comes from the UMD drive. But the thing is that noisy UMD contains 1.8 GB of data compared to the DS's silent 256MB cartridge.
"horrid" : That just proves you're a DS fanboy and/or Sony hater because you don't even say why you think it's horrid.

I hope that they get rid of the PSP. It isn't that popular. Sony aren't doing too well with sales thanks to Nintendo with the Wii and the upcoming DSi.

You may not like the PSP, but saying that you hope they get rid of it? That's going a bit too far, mate.
I suggest you wait for the release of Dissidia FF, and then look at the situation.
The PSP isn't for everyone. It's mainly for people who are willing to play console-style games on the go. NOT for people who want to pick up and play casually when they feel like it.

Hope someone gets rid of you. The PSP's success is crippled by Nintendo and their handheld. I can acknowledge that. But the PSP is a fantastic device and it has a dedicated following. The audience is there for it.

Its amazing how Sony is playing catchup on the PS3 and PSP in their respective areas and yet still provides a smooth, enjoyable service for each. Furthermore, they supported the PS2 beyond the PS3's launch. Sony has a lot on its plate. They are a fantastic company, and have crafted the PSP extremely well. As a result, developers are making some awesome games on it. I'll keep buying Playstation products like this anyway..

As a form of respect, I say that the DSi.

They are going to probably get the psp outta here. And I hope it does. The dsi have slightly better screens along with graphics, DSWare shop, applications, music player, video player and document viewer (it has a web browser so why not?)
Yeah.....Sony need to gather up so e shit.

          StarJet Jan 3, 09
Have you ever even touched a PSP? The PSP has everything except the document viewer. You can still view simple text files on the browser, though.
And I'm laughing hard at your "better graphics" on the DSi.
Show me a DS game that has graphics that can beat top notch PSP graphics.

    @Krunal - Lol, Pokemon reference (Farfetch'd)? XD

And meh, I'd prefer they work harder at getting good exclusives. And when the PSP2 comes out (hopefully much better hardware), we'll see them working harder to get exclusives and push the hardware.

Disagrees with who?? If its the lack of good titles on PSP there are equally good titles if not better on the DS from Square Enix.
There pretty much neutral in the portable competition.

        Fatal Error Dec 31, 08
Uh, SE does not have many good RPGs on the DS. At least, many that you can't play elsewhere because they're available on other consoles.

FFIV, The World Ends With You, and Chrono Trigger are all, and Chrono Trigger doesn't even get a graphics update. D=

Pretty good article, especially noting the up-and-coming iPhone/iTouch as a potential platform for a lot of developers. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the PSP, especially since the number of games being produced for the system has indeed been dropping recently.
  • 3
    Koloth Dec 31, 08
Hmmmm, yea 40 million sales I bet Sony is just ready to drop the only portable to effectively break into Nintendo's exclusive domain. The people buying the iPhone and iTouch aren't buying them as a gaming console either. My boss has one and the only game I have ever seen him play is the lightsaber thing and some fishing app. That's hardly a major competitor for the likes of God of War.

It might be time to look into a PSP2 rather than updating the same old hardware. But Sony is far from dropping anything. These doom and gloom articles are getting annoying. Bunch of "experts" that know nothing about marketing or business making predictions about how companies will respond to competition.

    quickquestion Dec 31, 08
Just because the psp doesn't sell 100 million units doesn't mean it sucks. A lot of my friends have psp's and one just bought one. People don't buy the I Phone just for games, and the psp is a great multi-media device i play music and watch videos on mine all the time. As for the optical drive UMDs are fine, 1.8gb is fine for a hand-held game. This guy is an idiot.

Linkin Park Fan* Dec 31, 08
Hmm when people hear itouch they right away think music. When they think PSP they right away think games. So when people want to go get a portable gaming device, They will choose the psp because it actually FEELS like a gaming device. Plus it might not have a huge list of exclusives right now, but it has a good game collection.

    dmf_dynasty Dec 31, 08
I'm on my friends' iPhones all the time. The mini-games are fun for short bursts of killing time, but I wouldn't consider anything on it an actual game.

I haven't used my PSP since GoW, though. They really haven't made anything to keep me interested for a while. I'm excited for 2009 though. Motorstorm, Resistance: Retribution, and I think a rumored LBP PSP.

Why do people keep complaining on the PSP is failing??

In my book there a huge success. How long did the N-gage last??
What about all the Sega portables??

While nintendo is winning in sales and games Sony is proving a point that you Nintendo isn't the only one that can make a portable and make a giant success out of all of it.

Sony may have broken the ice, and know I wouldn't be surprised if we ever see an Xbox portable (way in the future however) or Apple making a front on a gaming portable device.

Sony was the only one to last this long and still do good for themselves.

Theres no doubt in my mind that they'll give up on the psp, otherwise they'll just be sending a message to every other company out there trying to compete against nintendo that they can't be beat and theres no point.

Ha, yeah . . . again with the gloom and doom analyst type thinking.

The PSP isn't going anywhere. They have some good games, exclusives, but also it's like the PS3. It's not just about the games, but the media in general. Music, movies, internet, etc. Heck, the Remote Play is enough to keep the PSP in the works (so long as they add to it and refine it!)

Hey PSP haters, just remember in 4 years time, PSP outsold the Xbox 1 by a ration of 2:1. Xbox 1 25 million, PSP over 40 million units. And Guess what? MS is still in the game, and Sony PSP which is the first Portable system to give some competition to Nintendo handheld market is doing extremely fine. The PSP is really an underrated portable in much need of props.
Just to quickly touch on exclusives atm(or announced in progress):

*God of War Chains of Olympus
    *Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core
    *Final Fantasy 13 Versus Agito
    *Final Fantasy Dissidia
    *Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
    *Parasite Eve(forgot the number)

2 of which has been out worldwide for 5 months. One of them out in Japan which sold over 300+ copies on opening day(Dissidia) and that's not to mention the next 3 which isn't out yet which WILL get some sales. Yea the PSP is far from failing. And this doesn't include some of the titles already out for years now.

God will the Sony hate ever die? "PS3 is failing and dying", "PSP is going bye bye", "PS3 is the last Sony console"......etc.

I remember, it was really great, the only problem I had with it was the loading screens almost every 10 minutes or something.

Really got on my nerves, they needed to fix that up.

The loading issue wasn't there in Rival Swords, the PSP port of The Two Thrones.

as long as square continues their strong support for the psp, and capcom keeps giving psp owners monster hunter, it'll be doing just fine. the psp was a window to monster for pretty much everybody outside of japan, so it's more-or-less the core of the international monster hunter fanbase. all the monster hunter games meet a fantastic response, and usually push psp sales. i'm not sure how much of an affect monster hunter unite is going to have outside of japan, but i expect it to do pretty well. with this release, AND dissidia on the horizon (as well as the amazing prinny game, and the confirmed disgaea 2 port scheduled in japan), the psp has a bright Q1/Q2 ahead of it.

like killosity said, the psp has a very specific, dedicated audience. the psp only looks bad when compared to the trillions of clueless parents who buy the DS for their kids, and the psp library only looks bad when you stack the vast amounts of DS shovelware against it's mostly-solid, modest library.

it isn't even out yet you dimwitted little nintendo bot, you have no idea how it plays. are you THAT *bleep*ing passionate about hanging off of nintendo's proverbial dick that you can't even help making utterly irrelevant fanboyish statements like that in an article that has ZERO to do with the wii? or are you just a terrible troll?

get off the internet, and take your archaic meme with you.

also the negative reaction to wii-exclusivity from the monster hunter fanbase was so strong that capcom was forced to actually reconsider their questionable decision at one point.

How are people on this article "hoping" for the PSP to be beaten by the DSi. Unless your family is being held hostage by Nintendo or you have shares in the respective company, its nothing but pure fanboyism, and retardation.

Get a grip. Each to their own with their handheld enjoyment.

The PSP has been the first portable to give Nintendo competition in years, it has sold over 40 million units which is almost twice what the Xbox and Gamecube sold (and if you haven't noticed they both continued on)
  • 0
    HawkMan Jan 4, 09
Why are you comparing a handheld to console?
  • 0
    Bale Fire Jan 4, 09
Why not? What I'm pointing out is that people are saying the PSP is a failure and that Sony won't make a PSP2, however full fledged consoles like the two I mentioned sold much less and both got upgrades (in the form of the 360 and Wii) and no one determines them a failure.
    • 0
      Red 9* Jan 4, 09
I'm telling you, even if Sony becomes the all out gaming leader with the PS3 and PSP, there will always be scores of people calling Sony a failure, regardless of how well they're doing.
