Gaming has made some amazing changes in the last ten years. Here is GamesRadar's comparison between gaming in 1998 and gaming in 2008. Go to the source for the full article ...

Seeing as it took almost 40 years for movies to learn how to talk, gaming hasn’t exactly shuffled its feet. It hasn’t even been 40 years since Computer Space became the first commercial game, and what began as little more than dandruff on a black screen is already threatening photo-, audio- and physical realism. So let’s look closer at how times have changed, starting with the year that gave us Dana International, 1998.

Ah 1998, doesn't feel like too long ago. I primarily played my N64 and SNES that year, and I remember picking up NHL '99 that year and loving it. I don't think I picked up much else new that year, other than a few SNES games like Earthworm Jim 2, Sim City, and Monopoly, and that was the year I finally got around to beating Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

      I reckon I got my PS1 in 98.

Like many (at least according to AVGN), I feel the PS1 was the last console of the golden age of gaming.

Considering it has been 10 years, some stuff hasn't changed TOO much. Certainly nowhere near as big a leap as from 2D to 3D.

In 10 years, where will we be? I don't think we'll stll have quite the photorealistic look, but the biggest budget, best designed games will take your breath away, I'm sure. Well, if you saw em now anyhow. In the future, it would just be a bit better than last year's visuals.

But I have oft imagined taking modern games and technology, and showing it to people from the past. Go back about 20+ years (or if you prefer, the dawn of Video games, the Pong era), and stuff like HDTVs and Cell architectures would seem like something out of a Sci-fi movie. Hell, even now we've got stuff coming out that seems sci-fi like. Flexible LCDs anybody?

In 10 years I have a feeling we'll be winding down the next generation of consoles (as in, the PS4 and new Nintendo and XBox consoles), seeing some truly graphically-amazing games. Madden will still be Madden, Dynasty Warriors 12 will be the same as the rest of them, and EA will try to take over the world... but the world will reach an exclusive deal with 2K Sports first!

I'd like to post before someone says "In 10 years the market will be flooded with casual games".
Please don't post that. Comments like those are getting predictable and annoying. Even today while the market seems to be leaning towards casual gamers, there are still enough hardcore games to satisfy, and in 10 years, I can see the market being more balanced out as several casual gamers might become hardcore games.

But anyway, like Omega said in 10 years I can see the 8th generation wrapping up, as I race around trying to catch all 900+ Pokemon. But I’ll still be yelling at everyone on the forums for their stupid ideas about Zelda MMOs and Metal Gear coming to Xbox.

Try comparing 1988 to 1998. Now that's another story.

You remember that round, shiny thing Princess Leia shoved into R2-D2 back in 1977? My Mum still talks about how baffled everyone was about that at the time.

I know, that's my point (pre 3D gaming generation, to 3D gaming genration).

Lol, I don't think I even saw Star Wars episode 4 until CDs had already came out XD

But really, isn't it kinda freaky (in a cool way) that bits of plastic (and other synthetic materials) can hold stuff like videos, text, pictures, GAMES, etc?....

The greatest game ever created was released in 1998.

I think we all know what game I'm talking about.

Bioshock and MGS4 are nowhere close to being the greatest game of all time, haha.

    Metal Gear Solid 4 got a 94 while Bioshock got a 96.

LoZ: Ocarina of Time, on the other hand, got a 99.

It is upto opinion, not a diverse set of ranking and review scores. It can be your greatest game of all time, but In no way is it mine. Good, but not even close to the greatest by any means. No scores will tell me otherwise; Bioshock is MY favourite/greatest game of all time.

Its almost as if your saying just because it got the highest average, its therefore the greatest.

Do you think I care what MGS4 scored?

I don't even like Zelda games so I'm not going to consider it the greatest game of all time just because it scored more than MGS4.

That's right. It's a matter of opinion and i personally have nothing to do with any Zelda and it's never going to get to my top games list. But there's no such a thing as best game of all time, standards change within time and the awesome games of today will be the dead titles of later.

Thats what I thought too after I played LoZ: OoT, yet ten years later, the game still isn't dead yet. Still my favorite game of all time. I have (really) enjoyed many games since then, but I don't think any game will come to as close as perfection as OoT did.

But you're right, its all a matter of opinion. My last post with the review scores wasn't meant to be serious, haha. I haven't even touched MGS4 or Bioshock since I beat them, so I wouldn't consider them my favorite games.

Is it possible or would it be too much trouble if you actually typed like a human being instead of a fanboy? "Cock off Doody 4" really is immature way of calling Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare.

Duke Nukem part was hilarious. Gaming has changed a lot in 10 years and wow i imagine ourselves in ten years getting drained into the gaming world instead of just playing it no a TV screen... that's where technology will be leading us.

In 10 years we'll get games, some great, alot bad.

But only 1 game will we never get, in 10 years time we'll still be waiting for Duke Nukem Forever.

Hopefully with Unreal Engine 6 =/

Look at the picture when it is enlargened. Have a look at the mirror in the 2008 version for a surprise.

      It's not a mirror. Duke's at a strip club.

Oh. Sorry! My mistake... i thought the reflection of the girl - naked was a bit wierd. But he's at a strip club. That, i didn't know.

These are the times that make me wish that I was born earlier than I was. I really missed out the good old 90s, I got a PSone only in 99. By the time I became a hardcore gamer, it was already 2004.

I just might freeze myself until the PS9's release.
I mean magical beams that shoot up your nose??
    EPIC.
