The editor of SlapStic.com calls for Microsoft to raise their somewhat unreasonably low friend limit for Xbox Live, giving several reasons for the demands and specifically calling out Major Nelson for a response.

There are no "friend limits" on popular Web 2.0 services like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, so why is there one on the 360? Xbox Live isn't a TOTALLY horrible place to meet people (although there is the occasional mildly *bleep*, foul-mouthed meth child that I've come across), and I'll admit that I've played with some folks on Gears of War 2's Horde Mode that I had a blast with.

They don't want gamers to be too popular.

100 is plenty, and it is a completly different case to Messeneger and such.

Yes, 100 would be plenty, but I don. understand why Microsoft had to implement a limit. I had no idea there was a limit on the XBL friends list until now.

Yes but that doesn't mean there should be a limit. It's the same issue with PSN as well. People who play online and have fun, for instance ChiroVette playing Burnout Paradise, he likes the fact he can make friends playing a game as huge as BP online. The whole friends cap is ridiculous.

I had around 89 friends on Live before it my Live ran out, and I don't see how someone can have 100 friends, who they still recognize and play with.

Even though it's kinda useless since even when capped out at 100 friends I only play with like 10 of them. But I still think it's kinda stupid to have a cap on how many friends you can have.

If it was going to slow live down, and the connection when checking through who's online etc. then i'd rather it was capped to be honest.

I think it is a good and bad idea, good because if you do have a 100 friends and don't want to delete any, bad because some might be too little (ugh damn 8 year olds FR me).

If MSN can have unlimited contacts without slowing it down, i don't see how it would slow down the live service, thats made by the same people

I'm kinda surprised at this, especially since LIVE isn't necessarily a free service. I could see them limiting the silver (or whichever is free) accounts to 100 and paid members unlimited. Social networking is a HUGE deal at the moment so it seems counter productive on MS' side.

    @On Vacation
The two have totally different infrastructures, software and hardware. Just because the two are made by the same company doesn't mean they can emulate each other. They can use techniques in some things learned from one and apply it to the other but just because one service can do X feature doesn't necessarily mean the other will have the same thresholds.

Yes but it shows they're certainly capable of doing it, perhaps easily with a few modifcations to the programming

100 Should definitely be enough I think. I mean, you just have to have people you actually want to be friends with or play games with. My cousin adds people that play a game with him and he had fun with. However . . . he never plays a game with them again. So, he has all these people and perhaps only 3 are people he actually plays online with. The rest were mere passers-by.

With the PS3, their limit is 100. Know how many I have there? Total among my multiple accounts is about 50-something. And a good 10-15 I seldom catch online but do keep them on for chatting purposes.

100 is enough in my opinion, I only tend to keep friends I actually play with, and that is only about 20 ATM.

Only 100 friends? OH BOO HOO, go get a flippin' MySpace. 100 should be more than enough unless you're one of those people who frivolously add contacts/friends.

Try being a female gamer on LIVE. I definitely think twice when people try to add me to their list or LIVE party. My list of actual friends is pretty short.

This guy just needs to get out more.

Every time I reach the 100 limit I delete some one who's been inactive, problem is I'm usually good friends with them. Most of them are from where I live, a few a good anyway though.

I know this comment will seem redundant at this point, but I find it hard to believe that anyone has 100 "friends" on their list that they actually play with. More often than not, you'll be playing online on a certain game and you'll have a few encounters with someone you enjoyed playing with and you'll add each other. More often than not, thats it and you rarely play with each other again. That's happened to me many times, so I've done plenty of deleting over time.

Right now, my list stands at around 30-32 people, most of them are from Neo whom I know I would enjoy playing with and could socialize easy enough with.
