In this opinion article from Seeking Alpha's Bruce Everiss, we see Sony's status in the industry today examined, from which the question arises: can the company return to its glory days the next generation?

Sony are in trouble because they have no big, successful product differentiators. In fact, for much of what they make you can buy a better equivalent for less money. The Xbox 360 is a prime example and many consumer electronic items from Samsung and LG are further examples. The high value of the Japanese yen is making this even worse.

To be honest Sony is still in it's "glory" days the PS3 is selling faster and stronger than the PS2 and PS1 did and the PS2 went on to sell 140 million units. The reason for the faster sales of the PS3 has a lot to do with upgrades from PS2 just like the 360 had a fast inception rate thanks to the Xbox, the PS3s glory days will continue and get stronger when and if PS2 gamers upgrade to PS3 which Sony is hoping for i mean if only 50% of PS2 owners upgrade to PS3 thats 70 million units which is a strong number.

a bit off-topic but w.e. Is that picture taking a dig at how the PS3 has 'loads of buttons'?

The guy that wrote that is a blithering idiot. He sites the 360 as a cheaper alternative to the PS3. Bull MANURE! Microsoft is laying off 5,000 people this month and more to come. Things are tough all over. To question a PS4 is stupid when the PS3 has yet to reach its potential.

      Err...

      PS3 = £290
      Xbox 360 = £170

      170 is a smaller number than 290.

It's funny how those fanboys have the stupidest idea of getting back at the competition.

Hunskelper just because the console is cheaper doesn't mean it is making money. What SS4Gogeta was saying is that Microsoft are just as affected by the global economic crisis as Sony is, so if the PlayStation 4 is called into any form of doubt the Xbox 3 should aswell considering they are selling equally* year for year and both organisations are being hit hard finacially.

*Equates to the year headstart that the Xbox 360 had and if launched side by side on the same day as the PlayStation 3, sales figures equate that if all stayed the same the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sales would be equal, this is based on the fact that the PlayStation 3 is only 8 million units away from the Xbox 360 at this current moment in time despite launching a year later.

"He sites the 360 as a cheaper alternative to the PS3. Bull MANURE!"

That's what I was addressing with my earlier comment. I didn't say anything about companies making money.

        Ps3- £300
        £300 for everything
Xbox 360- £130 for console (arcade model)
        60gb hard drive- £70
        rechargable battery-£15
        wireless adapter- £60
        xbox live = £40 a year.

        Totals.
        PS3 - £300
        Xbox 360 - £315

xbox costs more so at least with the ps3 you get everything ready to play online with unlike 360

Oh please don't start that, Sony tried that bullshit and it's just pathetic. I don't really care which model is more expensive as it's a moot point. The Xbox 360 is cheaper though sales figures show that the more expensive console is catching up with both the Xbox 360 and Wii, the cost of the unit matters none if it's still selling.

There's that, and the fact your pricing is way off.

          Xbox 360 (60GB) - £169.99
          Rechargable Battery - £9.78
          Wireless Adaptor - £44.99
          15 Months of XBL - £34.25
          Total - £259.01

          PS3 (40GB) - £293.61
          HDMI cable - £17.61
          Total - £311.22

I used shopto.com for pricing and GAME when shopto didn't have what I was looking for.

    lol.

Everything is slumping in the economy at this point aside from BMW Minis and Rolls Royces.

Despite that, I am not entirely sure if they will make a PS4 either way.

How so? When you buy a Sony product you're paying extra for the brand.

      Sony products are overpriced.

        BlackLabel Jan 26, 09
Haha overpriced... Please promise me never go into business or if you do work for Microsoft they'll *bleep*ing love you. You know that the PlayStation 3 used to cost Sony $900 and they used to sell it for $600. Now the console costs $400 to make and they sell it for $300.

Sony are already selling technology so expensive it couldn't be much cheaper. The way you sound you would love every organisation to sell at a loss. Yes you can live by it's only the brand you are paying for, that maybe true for PC's and TV's but not consoles. For once you are paying for the technology, you are paying for the Blu-Ray, CELL, RSX, Rambus RAM. Maybe all that means shit to you but to the technologically inclined it means very good and very expensive.

Let me reiterate that, in a PS3 it's $300, that tech if bought by you for a PC would be $2000+ and thats a serious estimation. So do some research before you say Sony PlayStation 3 is just a brand name it's like me bashing the Xbox 360 because it's a Microsoft product, brands mean nothing when it comes to consoles it's the technology that works out the price and the games that work out how good it is.

Ironically Hunskelper's accumulating more thumbs up out of being misinformed than you are being sensible...

Both comments Hunskelper has made here has implied that he really doesn't care about the facts of what the PS3 is, and what it provides. He just seems to be making cheap cracks at Sony.

Personally Sony is in a great position, just not as good as before. NONE of the companies out there are in as good positions as they were a few years ago, not even MS.

Sony don't just make PS3's. They make computers, TV's, MP3 players, etc. as well.

          DURRRRR.

you've obviously never bought windows or Microsoft office or an ipod the possibly highest priced things that cost nowhere near production and make millions because everyone just willingly pays it for the brand even though there are awesome free or cheap alternatives.

          Hunskelper Jan 26, 09
I have Windows and an iPod touch. I never said you aren't paying extra for the brand with Microsoft or Apple.

And I use Open Office instead of Windows Office.

Look at nintendo with the gamecube, that thing was more fail then the ps3 ever could be and look at nintendo now.

      blazeboy11 Jan 26, 09
The Gamecube wasn't really fail, I quite enjoyed my gamecube and I still play GCN games now, despite on my Wii. In fact, I play more GCN games than Wii games simply because I find them more enjoyable. It wasn't very popular but you shouldn't just write it off as shit.

And I couldn't care less if there is a PS4 or not, I quite enjoy the PS3(much more than my Wii) and I plan to buy one soon. If there is no PS4 the third party developers would simply start developing on Nintendo and Microsoft's consoles, and I could still play the games I would have enjoyed on the PS4, albeit on different systems. Its not like there being no PS4 would make purchasing a PS3 a waste, though the PSN servers probably would shut down.

I think he was referring to the sales and business aspect of the Gamecube being a failure.......not that the system itself was shit.

I'm cool with a PS3 for the next 8 years.

I personally think that the gamecube was great. I think it had the easiest multiplayer, and best exlusisves. To me, it's just an overally godly system.

As for the PS4, they'd beeter come up with some new shit or else, they'll have nothing left.
I can't think of what Sony can do. Pfft, what's next? Soooper high intelligent ultimate graffix? And it's not helping that the PSP isn't going to get as much attention. The DSi is coming out and parents/Grandparents will be all like, "oh my gosh it's a DS I have to buy this." The DSi may have more extra features, but it's not too different from the PSP's apps. Sony. Maybe you should try better online play and wireless multimedia sync. Also, lower you prices on behalf of less fortunate people.

Why is it unintelligent to sat Sony products (Sony TV's, Sony Laptops, Sony Phones, Sony MP3 players, etc.) are overpriced?

I never once said $400 was too much for a PS3.
