Since the Resident Evil 5 demo's release, fans have been split down the middle regarding the game's controls. Some think they're outdated and clunky, while others think there is nothing wrong with them. MTV Multiplayer's Patrick Klepek is in the former group. He believes Capcom have made an error in choosing not to update the controls of their newest game. He uses Dead Space as an example of what next-gen horror games should play like. Do you agree? Disagree?

“Dead Space” got it right. It took the fast action we’re accustomed to and married it with action horror. The “Resident Evil” series is no longer meant to be scary, but it is designed to be tense — same as “Dead Space.” You never thought about the controls in “Dead Space,” but in “RE5,” they’re at the forefront. Movement in “Dead Space,” feels smooth and natural. You can focus on what’s really important: killing things.

Capcom only went halfway with “RE5″’s new controls. You can run and “look” simultaneously, but not run and shoot (”Dead Space” did not make this mistake.” In “RE5,” you still need to stop, line up a shot, holster the gun and run away. Even though the enemies in the “RE5″ demo are slow moving, they come in great numbers and often sneak up behind you. The inability to run ‘n gun combined with a too-close camera that obscures enemies not right in front of you makes “RE5″ unnecessarily frustrating at times.

The lack of run ‘n gun is the big problem. Even though camera in “Dead Space” is just as tightly packed behind the main character, “Dead Space”’s slick feel leaves players blaming themselves for dying, not the game.

What pissed me off is you cannot move at all while aiming. even if you only move slowely, that would have been good. The only thing that I didn't like about the controles was the option menu. When your surround by a bunch of zombies, and one gun out of ammo, you want to quikly switch weapons, not go through a bunch of options.

"do you want to switch to this weapon"
YES I WANT TO SWITCH! Why do you think I clicked on it!

What? You can just press the d-pad for a quick weapon change.

Never played DS so I won't bother commenting about the article.

This has been mentioned WAY before the demo even came out. It was pretty obvious that Dead Space took the RE4 formula and basically perfected it. For some reason Capcom did some minimal (and almost forgettable) changes but the whole thing still feels dated (thanks to all the shooter games that took advantage of the gameplay, including Gears of War). We'd like to use BOTH analog sticks, thanks.

I didn't like Dead Space much. I didn't even finish it.

I know some people like to say if you don't finish it you really can't critique it but I disagree.

At any point during a game, If I say "done" then walk away. I think I can safely say I didn't like it.

However, I loved RE4. I still have high hopes for 5

I've played the original RE4, and found some aspect of the controls frustrating. If they've not changed it at all with the production of RE5, that is a real concern for gamers.

I felt the exact way when playing RE5, and used Dead Space as a good example of how the controls could of been better. It's made me realize just how good of a game Dead Space is fundamentally.

I hope the hype doesn't give RE5more credit than it deserves. I want Capcom to learn a lesson.
