In this editorial we take a step back and look at whether or not Nintendo has ditched core gaming entirely. And as you will see in this article, Nintendo's new business model is more of an expansion than a total transition to the casual market.

Nintendo has always been the bastion of core gaming. That is, until they released the Wii and ditched the core market for the more lucrative casual market. Or have they? If anything, in comparison to the Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo 64, they have expanded upon the amount of cores games they release. The only difference now is that have expanded their portfolio to include an array of casual games. The expansion, instead of being considered an expansion, has largely been taken as a transition to the casual market. This idea of Nintendo making a complete transition can largely be attributed to the media, unjustified comparisons to HD consoles, and to some extent, Nintendo themselves.

Again, even with evidence like this, people will still say the Wii is only for 3 year olds and soccer mums, because the internet is just so damn biased.

Evidence doesn't matter in a battle of personal opinions. You know that.

I frequently come to the defense of the PS3 yet I know I can't convince people it is doing perfectly fine. People want to believe it is crashing and burning and I can't stop them. Even though all the REAL evidence points to the contrary.

You jump to the defense of the Wii. Yet surely you must know that many of us just don't care. Hell I own a Wii and I don't care. My son plays it and that's fine with me. Keeps him away from my PS3 and 360. So at least in my house it is a "kiddy" system. And this is a stigma you're never going to get away from so long as the best selling games are filled with colorful cartoon characters. Even if they are fun.

        Colorful characters =/= kiddy.

When will people learn that. :sigh:

          Never.

My grandmother to this day will tease me about watching "childrens" cartoons. Even if they are the most violent anime you could find. She sees animated images and instantly thinks it is for kids. And many people think this way.

Being kiddy has nothing to do with being casual.

GameCube, people will call that kiddy but it's easily the most Hardcore system of the sixth generation, all that first party support *sighs happily*.

You can't judge an entire console as a 'kiddy' system, just seperate games. JUST!

I think Nintendo have been truthful when saying they haven't abandoned non-casual gamers, and will be supporting them. There's been enough to pique my interest..I may get a Wii eventually..

Yeah, their line-up for this year is proof that they haven't forgotten about the hardcore gamers, what with games like The Conduit and MadWorld.

I agree with Big A2, I'm 18 and the Wii is the only console I have, and I love it. And I aint casual either.

That's probably why you love it so much.

Gotta agree there, go and buy a PS3 or 360 and your Wii will slowly wither away in the corner (mine is).

Brawl was terrible, Mario Galaxy was short, Zelda wasn't the best it could be and i ain't got round to finishing Metroid Prime 3 because its just boring.

wut? Brawl was overrated but still pretty good, Galaxy was amazing and Zelda was good.

          Agree about Metroid though.

While I understand the "people in glass houses" message you're going for Big A2, he's right.

Old Wizard are massive Nintendo fanboys.

The Wii has some cracking games (Galaxy, Boom Blox, Brawl, etc.), the problem it has is their just aren't enough games close to that quality out.
