OXCGN takes a look at a very worrying state of affairs, especially of late. Where the mere mention of something other than what others want to hear, brings out the most vile and vengeful traits in many gamers.

But, are they really gamers, or simply childish individuals using the anonymity of the internet to flex their would-be-muscles?

Slip over and take a look, pass a comment, but be warned, if the comment gets abusive, you'll only be 'supporting' the whole argument . .so think before sticking your foot in your mouth.

One only need run a cursory eye over any forum, bulletin board, comments box or listing on almost any gaming site and there they will be. Fanbois! The curse and plague of the gaming fraternity. The bane of many serious gaming journalists and for the many gamers who simply want to share information or comments in an adult and sensible manner.

It seems that these days, you MUST chose a side . . . and you can not actually support any other platform other than the one you currently use, otherwise you’re really not a real gamer - read ‘Hardcore’ gamer. This of course is the complete opposite to what a real gamer is.

In fact, a ‘real gamer’ is someone who supports gaming for gaming’s sake, not simply a single platform at the exclusion of all others. Here at OXCGN we pride ourselves in not being biased towards any platform.

Oh dear, I can hear it already . . “well you’re on a Xbox 360 site dude, so you’re biased already - failed” . . .

While agreed, there is one point I don't agree with.

    quote Source
Are these the actions of mature, sensible adults or “gamers” . . . no . . .
Like everything else in the world, each category that life labels us with there are many sub-categories depicting what type they are.

I admit it, I am a PC fanboy but I majorly prefer PC over consoles...so what makes me different to other fanboys or should I say, the ones that plague the forums with "MAH CONSOLE PWNZ URS!"? Simple, while it is evident that I wouldn't spit on either console to put it out if it was on fire...I have always backed up my points, reasons, opinions and beliefs of why I like or dislike a game or console yet at the same time I state that "if you like it then whatever floats your boat"

However I don't think it's my dislikeness to a console or game that people don't like but the method and wording I use to get my point across...thus this brings out the person's bad side when replying. The reason why I disagree with the quote is because both off the net and on it I am a mature and senisible adult...obviously I do have my "off" days but I am sorry, I will not hold my tongue (or in this case fingers) and not say what I actually think just to protect someone's feelings towards something they like/love.

As to actual other fan boys...it is a macho man thing, it always reminds me of the kids in the playground saying "Yeah...but bet my dad could beat your dad up!"

There are some of us that have PCs, 360, PS3 and a Wii we play games on. I play on all of the platforms and like them all for various reasons. I can listen or read why someone prefers one over the other if they do it in a respectable fashion. There is no need to be rude and no reason to take anything personal. I don't own stock in any platform. I think you can make your point and spare insults. What I find funny is most fanboys may have never played on the platform they bash. That was a great article.

Indeed, that's why I have reasons to back up my opinions. I have played the 360 but i just don't own it, I have played the PS3 and own it merely because my friends pestered me into getting it to play online (which never happens because we always go around one of their houses and play together) and I played the Wii, just don't own one because house is small and I fear I will break something XD

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh so you mean you wont tolerate other people... no that would just be plain immature wouldnt it?

      carouselambra Feb 12, 09
thats not what that means. Tolerating other people's ideas does not mean submitting to those ideas and admitting that that person is Right. If you tolerate other people, it means you'll listen, and say "I like what I like, you like what you like, i believe I'm right and you're wrong, what you say makes no difference to me, what i say makes no difference to you". Why should people self-censor and hold back just because someone does not agree with them, or does not have the conviction to stand by their own belief?

I believe the term is "Lurk Moar". My friend, the use of the smile in DarkLordAkuma's message is there to show that he was joking around. See typically you should have done something similar for your little "I drew that comic" joke too, but your new, and it's forgiveable.

i believe the term here is "go see some sunlight. moar." that's bullshit man what are you talking about? he's calling into question the nature of tolerance. When someone then challenges what you said, you can't go and say "oh i used a smiley i didnt MEEEEEEEEAN IT LEAVE ME ALLLONE BAWAAAAAA" dont freakin say it then.

Also, just to clarify, i did actually draw that comic mate. sort it out.

I think the Fanboy drawing adds fuel to the fire.....LMAO

I was going to mention that Fanboyism has been around forever and a day since Trekkies and Star Wars fans started going at it....it moved into comic books (pictured above) and now it's into video games. Personally I think it's just the nature of the beast.

People get all defensive about their beliefs. So I guess in reality religion is really where the Fanboy wars started....LMFAO

FTW! Look at religion nowadays. Millions of people have been killed due to the simple fact of someone killing another for this very silly reason. Hell, it's still going on in todays world. Organized religion is a absolute scam if I have ever seen it. Frankly, I could care less if someone want's to worship the god of Chinchilla's. As long as it doesn't bother me LITERALLY.

But with todays childre...uh, gamers. You also have to realize that they talk the smack that they do because of the very nature of the Internet. The ability to rile someone up without fear of getting their jaw broken.

There's two types of fanboys, the kind that know why they like the console they stick too, and the kind that post angry messages in all caps on forums.

      Immortal Kaim Feb 12, 09
The thing is, I would never label myself a fanboy, even though I currently prefer the 360 for my gaming needs. Fanbois are irrational, socially inept 'gamers' who would take a bullet for their precious multinational corporation of choice.

I on the other hand, own all the current consoles/handhelds (except a PS3, cause I can't afford it...) and enjoy games on any platform. Thankfully Gamegrep is full of likeminded gamers.

      Great article

There's the problem. The definition of "fanboy" has no real meaning on the internet. It used to mean someone's who's a fan of something to the point of obsession, but now it means someone who only likes a certain video game company and hates all the others, and that's normally called a bad thing.

I'm not fond of Microsoft and Sony much at all, but I know why I like Nintendo games (I'd tell you, but I don't want to start a flame war). And yeah, I would call myself a fanboy, if they weren't always seen as the worst thing in gaming since the V-Smile.

Don't worry about it Carouse, only reason I haven't replied to the "joking or not joking" comment made by DarkLordAkuma is because I can sense he misread my reply and was attempting to get a rise from his reply.

@Play: You may know he was joking but that's probably because you know him, I'm assuming Carouse doesn't know him because he posted with the same reaction I would have had posted with. I don't know DLA and so I would have assumed that his reply would have been made to spark an argument...pretty much like it has caused between you and Carouse.

No way ISDF, you left Neoseeker for good?

On topic, I personally think that XBL affected gaming a lot. ALl the people on there seemed to be mindless kids screaming abuse through the mic. It's kids and teenagers with sware words that ruined everything gaming stood for.

*bleep* THE 360 UNTIL IT BLOWS

Actually mate, the rise in this has happened more so since the explosion of the online gaming presence started in 2005/6 with both the 360 and the PS3.

XboxLIVE was present before the 360 for 3 years with little or no real drama like this. Same was so for the small PSN that existed. It was the huge, sudden influx of consoles to the general public and the push into the lounge rooms worldwide that have had such a marked difference, and it is expanding exponentially was we speak.

      It's a crying shame though.
