OXCGN writer David Hilton does this months Blog Banter dealing with the advent of the "Next-Gen" consoles when they hit us a few years ago, and how that has has an effect of both family and partners.

Plus looks at the huge change in "attitudes" of the recent generations of Younger Gamers. So make sure you slip over to the site, and enjoy our monthly adult conversation.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, something amazing happened. My new wife and I re-discovered gaming together.

I had first played video games in the 1980s on my Apple IIe but lost interest when my parents didn’t keep up with the new computers. My wife had played the Nintendo Game & Watch console as a kid, but never was much of a gamer.

Then in the early 1990s, freshly married, we found that our new 486 PC could do more than Uni assignments. We could play games! We discovered that games had advanced from the pixilated Karateka and Donkey Kong.

We watched each other play Wolfenstein 3D (I had played the original Wolfenstein game as a kid on my Apple) and I designed levels for her to play using the map editor. We sat and enjoyed the Monkey Island and Indiana Jones adventure games together.

Depends on how you look at it. You have games like Little Big Planet and then you have your flops.

?? Do you mean flops kill gaming relationships between partners?

Anyone else game with their partner, and what do you play together?

I play Gears of War 1 and 2 and Army of Two with my girlfriend for the campaign and then we play Halo 3 together online, it's the only game online that she can actually play pretty decent on. I tried and tried so hard to get her into LittleBigPlanet and she won't budge on it, she hates the PS3 controller or something like that. She has a spark of interest in Fallout 3's and MGS4's storylines, but it's no fun to play and have her watch or vice versa.

So get that converter thing that lets you connect a 360 controller to the PS3. That should shut her up.

Lol, I've already offered to buy her it, she's become a fangirl with the 360 because of the controller and has now said that she doesn't like the games it has.

Buy it anyway and force her to play the games. And if she says anything tie her up and beat her with the 360 controller. Make sure you brainwash her in the process so she knows her place.

Its odd i found this with various family members. My unvle always bought the new consoles out as soon as they where out but when the xbox came out then the 360 then PS3 he never bothered with any of them. Me an my borther used to go round to his house and play all manners of multiplayer games against each other on all consoles up to the PS2 then when the newer consoles came out this all ended. Now he has a child its definately dead. Looks like im going to playing Killzone 2 online from tomorrow so its all good =)

It wasn't a misunderstanding, it was bare-faced ignorance. If you're going to comment on something, at least know what you're commenting on.

That's a bit of a tragic story. Husband and Wife enjoy games, then tastes change, and they lost a very cool way of time bonding. Video gaming is a very acquired taste between couples, I'm guessing.
