If you were back 20 years ago and someone asked what you expected gaming to be like in 20 years what would you have said? Would it have compared to the wonders we have today? Would you have predicted cordless controllers? Handheld games? 3D graphics? Surround sound?

There's no way that anyone alive and gaming at the end of the 80s could have predicted how videogames would evolve over the next two decades. We know because we were there. Sure, it was pretty safe that graphics would get more better and consoles would get an ass-load more powerful, but besides that we were pretty clueless as to what gaming in the 21st Century would really be like. Now that we've arrived in the future, here's some of the things we could never have seen coming 20 years ago.

funny they forgot to mention that in 20 years sega and nintendo work together and put mario and sonic in the same game. In the 80's people would have laughed at you and then tossed you in a crazy asylum for speaking of such blasphemy.

Awesome article! Great title too. Funny how this article came out right around now because I had mentioned to my gf how much I missed NES a few weeks back, so what does she do? A week later I got a working NES with gun, and mario/duckhunt and 3!! My poor PS3 hasnt been touched for a while now.

Awesome article for a 90's kid.

LOL @ Loading times! I'd get pissed off at the 2 second intro of Super Mario World on SNES, and now - it took about 40 minutes to get DLC into Smackdown 2009.
