OXCGN writer takes a look at what could be wrong with Halo Wars. In a two part series, he first looks at the Single player side of the game and in Part Two, will discuss the Multiplayer aspects.

Looking at the history of the game and how it could lead to a different perception of Master Chief as a not-so-nice-guy. The Spartans were not made to save the world, but to .....

So the consensus here at OXCGN is that Halo Wars is pretty damn good. In fact Arthur declared greatness with a 9/10. But personally I’d declare something akin to goodness. It’s made RTS exciting and accessible on a console like never before and has the distinct and authentic smell of the ever-deepening Halo universe.
But it’s not perfect. In fact far from it.

Halo 3 was for many reasons a critical and commercial darling. Pure gameplay, seamless co-op campaigns, challenging AI and difficulty spread, multiplayer matchmaking second to none, unprecedented online community integration, an engaging universe and story that extended an already epic narrative curve, a captivating and identifiable protagonist, and the many wonders of Forge in which players were provided an abundance of tools for user generated content spanning game modes, maps, films and photo.

And people continue to play it, even when more modern shooters have taken (some) of Bungie’s innovations and deservedly captured audiences of their own (see CoD4, Gears 2, Left 4 Dead, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2).

I personally think the future of the Halo series will be fine as long as they keep it varied and create new aspects to the game and the story regardless of the presence of Master Chief. Halo Wars was one way of creating new intellectual property and although RTS is not my type of game, it's a step in the right direction for Bungie.

The problem with a lot of series is that each installment is essentially the same as the last one, just a little spruced up and with a new story. If Bungie can keep it fresh, Halo will continue to stand tall as the king of the FPS genre for a long time to come. Master Chief has had his run; a series of books, a game trilogy, and hopefully some day a movie, will be enough. The most I could ask for would be a good cameo appearance in future games. Maybe even throw in one level where you have to play as him.

ODST will be successful. Halo has a very rich plotline for an FPS (it has an advantage here because the developers were drawing upon a book series) and I know, once I beat that tough boss and the amazing cutscene starts, and that legendary Halo violins-and-guitars tune starts playing, I'll be happy. Bungie just has to keep changing it up, in a way that keeps the audience happy, and Halo Wars is the stepping stone.

ODST will make it, Chief or not.

Bungie don't make halo any more, they only aid in production.

Have to agree with you there mate . . . they need to keep it varied, or it becomes stale to those who need new life, rather than running around like some hopping jack-rabbit shooting everything that moves and going Meehaaawww .

There is a great deal that could be done, but will they do it, or simply follow the cash-cow that is Halo all the way to the bank . .UNTIL it no longer has the longevitity it once had.

Iwill always attract the player who wants instant gratification, but they are not the ones that follow the whole storyline, plot and universe. If Ensemble/Bungie or whomever do not add diversity, Halo will be come MS's Mario or that blue monster . . great to talk about in retrospect, but no real meat as far as a game is concerned

I'm rather surprised about the whole hate of the characters in Halo Wars, the ones in the trilogy weren't exactly deep, its hard to imagine a whole lot worse.
