Sony has been having a rough time in the hardware and software market this generation, but some members of the industry have an easy solution: just drop the price already.

Maybe developers who are saying this see the PS3 as a great system and would like to develop for it, but are afraid they won't get as many sales as the 360 would give them if they chose to develop for it instead.

Sony is only missing a few key elements ATM on the PS3 for it to grow exponentially. Or at least that's what I think.

More consoles get sold, more games get sold. Right now PS3s aren't selling nearly as well as they should be (so neither are the games), which turns developers off.

One more price cut on the PS3 and the 360 is going to have a hard time keeping up. The line up for 360 this year isn't impressive, even die hard 360 fans will tell you that. This is a great time for a cut though I don't think it's going to happen.

(just so everyone knows, I own both consoles. so don't flame me)

As a confessed 360 fanboy (heh), gotta agree. The lineup for 2009 on the 360 looks quite pathetic frankly. Of course its based on what one enjoys, but it seems like they need to milk and ruin the Halo franchise further in an attempt to have something this year.

But! E3 2009 will be interesting. Microsoft likes to keep the distance between release and announcement quite slim in comparison to other companies and their titles.

Maybe maybe not, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg already said a little while back that they were expecting a PS3 price cut, so you can expect a 360 price cut to follow shortly after the PS3, killing off some of the PS3s momentum.
And we can't really say much about each of the companies line up till E3 is over.

So the ball is in Microsoft's court, they have to have some big announcements at E3 if they want to keep the lead they have over Sony.

I can't really complain about a price cut.

Price cut would be smart, of course.

They also need to secure some more exclusives, namely IPs that have strong potential.

Although i do see sony's pointe about not dropping the price. Although lets do some calculations...

using the 199USD xbox 360 and the 399USD ps3 lets see xbl costs 49.99USD a year. Lets see that means 360 users get 4 years of xbl before they start paying more than what the ps3 costs atm. to make it reasonable id say sony should cut it down to about 299USD something around there. what do you think?

So basically ps3 only beats 360 after 4 years of xbl. I do have both of them.

I bet Sony want to drop the price as well, but frankly they need to be making some kind profit before they do.

I think Sony should go for it. There's a 50/50 chance that it'll work. Of course there also a 50/50 chance it'll make them drop the PS3, but there are risks involved in everything.

Well they've broke even with production costs and the price...but I think they should, this year is a good one for the PS3.

@anacreon- You cannot compare a model with an HD to one without it. Compare the 60 GB XBOX to the 80GB PS3. With an arcade, you lose about 1/2 the functionality of the XBOX, including DLC and the Netflix service and demo options(no HDD was a terrible way to go). That makes it a 2 year break even point. But I would consider it less since an XBOX user has to spend $40 to stop buying batteries for their controller. And don't get me started about the cost of a USB wireless card. You would have the same cost right there. If you want these features, and a BRD player,(and who doesn't wan't a rechargeable wireless controller) the PS3 is definitely not a bad deal.

True it is not a bad deal, but the lack of a variety of games and redundant online service makes the 360 oh so much more appealing to some people.
